INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #135 / Road Game #69 Indianapolis Indians (67-67) at Columbus Clippers (74-60) Saturday, August 28, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 7:05 p.m. EDT Huntington Park -- Columbus, Ohio Indians LHP Dana Eveland (0-2, 10.69 ERA) vs. Clippers LHP David Huff (7-1, 3.98 ERA) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Dana Eveland, will make his fourth Triple-A start of the season and his first start for the Tribe since July 19 when he takes the mound against the Columbus Clippers in this evening s contest... In his most recent start, a 3.1 inning appearance against Lehigh Valley on July 19, Eveland allowed three runs on six hits, but did not figure in the game s final decision as the IronPigs earned a 10-8 come-frombehind victory... Following his July 19 start for Indianapolis, Eveland was placed on the disabled list on July 22 and was then later activated on August 9... Since his return from the DL, Eveland has appeared out of the Tribe bullpen on five different occasions and has posted a 0-1 record and a 9.35 ERA (9 ER) in 8.2 innings of work... As a starter at the Triple-A level this season, the left-hander has gone 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA (10 ER in 7.1 IP) in three starts... The Washington native began the 2010 campaign with the Toronto Blue Jays, and, after posting a 3-4 record and 6.45 ERA (32 ER in 44.2 IP) in nine starts, the left-hander was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on June 1 for RHP Ronald Uviedo... Before being outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on July 5, Eveland posted a 0-1 record and a 8.38 ERA (9 ER in 9.2 IP) in three games (one start) for the Pirates... Eveland was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers organization in the 16th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft... On November 25, 2006, Eveland was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks organization along with LHP Doug Davis and OF Dave Krynzel in exchange for RHPs Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas and C Johnny Estrada... The left-hander spent one season with the Diamondbacks before he was traded to the Oakland Athletics organization along with LHPs Brett Anderson and Greg Smith and OFs Aaron Cunningham and Carlos Gonzalez in exchange for RHPs Dan Haren and Conor Robertson on December 14, 2007... Eveland was a member of current Tribe manager Frank Kremblas 2004 Double-A Huntsville team and Kremblas 2006 Triple-A Nashville squad... Eveland has yet to face the Columbus Clippers in his professional baseball career. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Eveland in tonight s contest is Clippers starter David Huff, who has made two starts against Indianapolis already this season... In his first start of the year against the Tribe, Huff earned his second Triple-A victory of the season after he held the Indians to two runs (one earned) on five hits in five innings of work in a 7-3 Columbus victory on June 29... Huff didn t fare as favorably in his second start of the season against Indianapolis on July 9, as the Tribe roughed up the left-hander to the tune of seven runs on 10 hits in just three innings, but fortunately for Huff, the Columbus offense bailed out their starter and rallied for a 10-9 victory... In his most recent start, an August 23 appearance against Toledo, Huff allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, but did not figure in the game s final decision as the Clippers earned a 4-3 walk-off victory... Overall at the Triple-A level this season, Huff has posted an impressive 7-1 record and a solid 3.98 ERA (28 ER on 70 hits in 63.1 IP) in 10 starts... The left-hander began the season with the Cleveland Indians, and, in two stints with the big league club this year, Huff has struggled to 2-11 record and a 6.21 ERA (55 ER on 101 hits in 79.2 IP) in 15 starts... At the Major League level this season, Huff has enjoyed some success despite his numbers, as the left-hander held the Texas Rangers to just two runs on four hits in a complete game victory on April 15 and also pitched well against the Boston Red Sox on June 8, but was let down by his defense as he was strapped with the loss following a six inning, three unearned run performance... Prior to squaring off against Indianapolis this season, Huff last faced the Tribe when he was a member of the Columbus Clippers in 2009 and earned two wins in two starts, while posting a 3.27 ERA (4 ER) in 11.0 innings of work. CRACK OF THE BAT AGAINST COLUMBUS: Thus far this season, the Indianapolis Indians have batted.279 (152-for-544) with 76 runs scored, 34 doubles, 18 home runs, 68 RBI and 66 walks in 16 games against the Columbus Clippers... Leading the offensive charge for the Tribe against the Clippers is INF Doug Bernier, INF Akinori Iwamura, C Erik Kratz, OF Kevin Melillo and INF/OF Brian Myrow... In five contests against Columbus, Bernier has batted.313 (5-for- 16) with two runs scored, two doubles and a.353 on-base percentage... Iwamura has hit.294 (5-for-17) with one double, one triple, three RBI and two walks in five games... Kratz has turned in a.313 average (10-for-32) with six runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and a.378 on-base percentage in 10 games, while Melillo, who has also squared off against Columbus on 10 different occasions this season, has batted.281 (9-for-32) with three runs scored, one double, one home run, two RBI and four walks. ROAD WARRIORS: As a team, the Indianapolis Indians have combined to hit only.246 (565-for-2298) and score just 294 runs in 68 games on the road this season, but two Tribe players have posted solid numbers away from Victory Field this year... Since joining the Indians, INF/OF Mitch Jones has posted a.286 batting average (8-for-28) with four runs scored, three doubles and a.394 on-base percentage in 11 road games, while OF Alex Presley has turned in a.306 batting average (34-for-111) with 21 runs scored, four doubles, two triples, three home runs, 15 RBI, 12 walks, six steals and a.379 on-base percentage in 29 road games... Although Indians OF Brandon Moss has only turned in a.233 batting average (56-for-240) in 64 games away from home, the left-handed slugger leads the Tribe in several categories on the road, including games played, runs scored (27), hits (56), doubles (14), home runs (7) and RBI (36). PAYING EARLY DIVIDENDS: Since he was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization along with C Chris Snyder from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization for INF Bobby Crosby, OF Ryan Church and RHP D.J. Carrasco on July 31, Indians INF Pedro Ciriaco has scored 13 runs, a mark which ties him with OF Alex Presley for the team-lead in runs scored in the month of August... In the process, Ciriaco has also stolen a team-leading five bases this month and has collected the second-most hits for the Indians (23) in August... Overall, Ciriaco has posted a.274 average (23-for-84) with five doubles, one triple and four RBI in 23 games with Indianapolis. LAST TEN, LAST FIVE: During the team s last 10 games played, the Indianapolis Indians offense has struggled to a.211 batting average (68-for-323) and has only scored an average of 3.1 runs per game (31 total runs scored)... Also in the team s last 10 games, only two batters INF Pedro Ciriaco (.273 BA) and INF/OF Mitch Jones (.320 BA) that have appeared in at least two contests have posted a batting average above.250... The Indians offensive struggles have been magnified over their last five games, as Indianapolis has posted a.169 batting average (26-for-154) and has scored only 14 total runs (2.8 per contest)... In the last five games, 10 of the 12 Tribe position players to have appeared in a game have recorded a batting average of.200 or lower.
