BC Wheelchair Sports Association and Tennis Canada are pleased to announce the 2018 BC PROVINCIAL WHEELCHAIR TENNIS PROGRAM General Information: The purpose of the BCWSA Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Program is to support athletes competing in wheelchair tennis at the Train to Train stage and higher of the Long Term Athlete Development Model. Selection to the 2018 BCWSA Provincial Wheelchair Tennis program will be considered based on an athlete s potential to represent BC at national and international levels of competition, demonstrated commitment to training, and ongoing development and improvement. The 2018 Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team will receive the following services/benefits: Coaching support at select ITF Tournaments & the Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships. Funding to assist with travel expenses to the 2018 Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Calgary, AB. Eligibility for the Provincial Athlete Assistance Program (AAP). Provincial Team Uniform Selection Guidelines: Selection to the 2018 BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team will be determined based on an athlete s potential to represent BC at national and international levels of competition, demonstrated commitment to training and ongoing development and improvement. Selection will be based on both objective selection criteria (see attachments tests may be subject to change to align with National Team program) and subjective selection criteria (i.e. commitment to training, provincial team potential, and training environment). The 2018 BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team selections will be announced on September 1 st, 2018. Your overall (combined score of objective and subjective scores) has to be over 50% to be eligible to be considered for the BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team.
Athletes who do not meet the minimum standards for the provincial team but show potential to represent BC in the future may qualify for BC Development Team status. The BC Development Team members may qualify for similar BC Provincial Wheelchair Athletics Team services, as determined by the provincial team coach. Individuals interested in being considered for the 2018/2019 BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team MUST communicate their interest in writing to Provincial Team Coach Steve Manley ahead of the selection date. Athletes who do not communicate their interest will not be considered for selection. Appeals Athletes have the right to appeal decisions made regarding the 2018 BCWSA Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Program in accordance with BCWSA s Appeal Policy. An appeal may only be heard if there are sufficient grounds for the appeal (as outlined in BCWSA s Appeals Policy) and must be submitted in writing within 7 days of the team selection to Michelle McDonell (michelle@bcwheelchairsports.com). Objective Criteria In order to be eligible for the BC Provincial Team or Development Team, players must complete the following and attend the below listed events in 2018: Testing Players will be assessed on a variety of different factors when being considered for selection to the Provincial Team (please see attachment). Testing will take place during the Provincial Team Camps. Athletes must attend at minimum one testing day to be eligible for selection to the Provincial Team. Please contact Steve Manley directly by email steve@bcwheelchairsports.com, to arrange a time for testing if you are unable to attend the pre-scheduled dates. **Athletes who have completed testing through the National Team program may submit those results. Training Camps/Clinics Current Provincial Team members must attend all Provincial Team Camps in order to be considered for the 2018/2019 BC Provincial Team*. All athletes selected to the 2018/2019 team must attend the Nationals training camp in October. Provincial Team Camps have been arranged on: 1. April 14 th & 15 th UBC Tennis Centre Details TBC 2. June 9 th & 10 th UBC Tennis Centre Details TBC Nationals Training Camp will be held October 20 th & 21 st at the UBC Tennis Centre Education Athletes must have completed the True Sport Clean 101 Canadian Centre for Ethics and Sport online module and/or equivalent as indicated by the provincial team coach. Membership: Athletes must be a member in good standing of BC Wheelchair Sports Association, Tennis BC & Tennis Canada. BCWSA Athlete Code of Conduct: Athletes must sign and adhere to all conditions of the BCWSA Athlete Code of Conduct.
Tournament Requirements Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships Athletes selected to the BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team are expected to participate in the Birmingham National Wheelchair Tennis Championships as a member of the BC Team. The 2018 Championships will be held in Calgary, AB from November 22 25, 2018. Details will be announced closer to the tournament date. Summer Series Tournaments Players must attend at minimum one Summer Series Tournament to be eligible for selection to the BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team. BC Wheelchair Sports has worked to secure a co-ed wheelchair division in all of these tournaments and it is very important that we continue our participation to maintain this opportunity. Players must have a valid BC Wheelchair Sports Association and Tennis BC Membership to register. BC Junior Provincial Team Age eligibility: Boys & Girls born on or after 1 January 2000. In order to be eligible for the BC Junior Provincial Team, players must complete and attend the following events in 2018: Training 1. Regular attendance at a wheelchair tennis program in BC 2. Special Considerations An athlete who is unable to meet the selection criteria due to acceptable special circumstances may still be considered for selection to the BC Provincial Wheelchair Tennis Team. Some accepted special considerations are listed below although this is by no means an exhaustive list. The Program Coordinator and Provincial Team Coach reserve the right to determine acceptable special circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Athletes who are unable to meet the selection criteria but still wish to be considered for the team must send written notification to Steve Manley (steve@bcwheelchairsports.com) explaining their circumstances two weeks prior to the team selection (by August 17, 2018). Athletes with high enough ( 50%) objective scores who have not met all additional requirements without a valid exemption may be named to the Provincial Development team at the discretion of the Program Coordinator and Provincial Team Coach. Acceptable Special Circumstances may include: Competing on a Canadian Team at an International Competition and/or Training Event proof of requirement to participate in National Team competition/training event may be requested (ex. YTP with identified events from personal coach, emails from National Team staff etc.) Injury or Illness Provincial coach must be notified prior to the start of the competition/clinic and a letter from a medical doctor may be required. Domestic Affliction defined as a personal or family tragedy, incident or emergency that does not allow you to attend. Education, Exam, or Graduation Commitment - schedule indicating classes, exams, or graduation ceremony may be requested Participation in an alternate approved ITF Tournament may be accepted in lieu of participation in one of the above required tournaments. Written approval from Provincial Team Coach Steve Manley must be obtained before the tournament registration deadline.
