Thank you, Bill Seed, for allowing us to enjoy your playground again. From what I saw and heard, it was a good event with a Paul Sherman / Jim Harrison course. I m looking forward to the other s there. I wasn t there as long as I would have liked May 28th Membership Meeting at to have been. If you BG Boltons East, 7:30 look at the Board p.m. Steering minutes, you can Meeting 6:30 p.m. expect to see a friend of the Region s (and, Jun. 1st #4 - Sunflower hopefully, prospective Aerodrome. Registration member) grilling good closes at 10:30 a.m., First stuff at the remote Car Out 11:00 a.m. (Sunflower and Strother) s. Please support his efforts. Finally, AVRG had its first Race. Special thanks go to NOTE! the still-smiling Sam Parsons for piloting All of our meetings have been the Pace Car on Saturday and a pair A Dave G. driving the pace car during the AVRG race. Photo moved to BG Boltons East! courtesy of Birdseye Photography (clydedcoman50@cox.net). of Dave G's, (Dave Gird and Dave Guinn) for Pace Car duty on. Sam also won both days. It was a pretty good weekend all around for Wichita Region members with a lot of top finishers. I do want to end this column quoting an email from the our region email list. Brian Meyer and Dave Geis traded barbs about who had the coldest location (it wasn t the warmest two days Oklahoma has seen.) But in all of it, Brian Meyer wrote the following and I thought it should be shared with everyone, not just the email list. May 14th Board of Directors Meeting at BG Boltons East, 7:00 p.m. This was the third (or fourth, I don't remember) race that I've worked at Hallett. At this race I really started to understand corner working a little better. First and foremost the corner workers are there for safety. Beyond being obvious, that fact was reinforced every time I've had an experienced worker teach me the fundamentals. Their job is to make the racing safer for the drivers. They're the people the drivers count on so they can take the risks they do - like going into a blind turn braking at the last possible moment, clipping the apex and rolling onto full throttle while the car drifts across the track going from on-camber to off-camber, sliding right up to the gators on the exit and full boogie over the hill and down the straight knowing that if there's trouble ahead there will be a flagman warning them. Beyond that, the workers are also the fans. Most of them know the drivers' names in every class and share in their celebration when they do well. For me the car that won FP was just another black Miata, but nearly everyone else knew it was Rick Harris and what I gather was his first win (?). A couple of things I took away from working corners last year was 1) the racing at the club level is every bit as exciting as the pro's, 2) the racing at the middle and back of the pack (that they don't often show on TV) is just as exciting as the racing at the front, and 3) race workers are an "interesting" bunch - unbelievably out-going but also just a bit wacko. I don't mean to offend anyone by that comment, and I think they'll admit to being somewhat atypical. This year I'm beginning to understand a little better. There is a core group of SCCA workers who make it to every race and enjoy working as much as I enjoy autocrossing (maybe more). To a person, I'm convinced that every one of them has the courage, will and training to handle a dangerous situation with grace and determination. Those are the qualities I've observed in firefighters, EMT's and soldiers. They are in essence and at the core - hero's.

Event #2 April 6th, 2008 at Sunflower Aerodrome Story by Paul Sherman Photos as credited Well, we've had the first of hopefully many solo events at Sunflower Aerodrome in Yoder. I tried to make the course a lot of fun and hope I succeeded. I wish I could have done something about the wind, though. We had a pretty good turnout I think, at 69 entries. Not bad The Hutch Naval Air Base control tower in the wee hours considering it as a bit of a drive out there, but an easy one. I think the of the morning. Photo by Kevin Anderson. first heat drivers got a bit of a surprise at how slick the surface was, as one car ended up just getting 4 tires into the field. There were quite a few sideways cars and a few spins, while everyone adjusted to the grip (or lack thereof) level. I don't think it took too long before the times started dropping. Marcus Hidvegi was running in the 53's in Brian Meyer's brand new Subie, with Chris Rigsby in his Honda and Dennis Smith in his Mustang not too far behind. Heat 2 saw times drop way down, with Dave Green leading the full-bodied cars with a very quick run in the 48's, actually beating Ryan Heller's F125 cart, but unable to catch Nick Deneault in the WSU FSAE car, with a mid-46 second run. Heat 3 saw times obliterated by Rick Knapp's 42 sec run in his F125 cart, which was fast enough for FTD and PAX times. Heat 4 had Jim Harrison in his Corvette just squeak by Dave Green's Corvette by.016 seconds for the best time for the real cars. I'd chalk the day up as a success, even though we got a later start than I hoped, and it turned into a very long day. In the end, I think all the effort is worth it for a site that will serve us well. And speaking of service, much thanks has to go out to Jim Harrison, Doug Lamoureaux, Brian Meyer, Dave Gird, Guy Roberts and Dave Geis for working on the site to clean it up beforehand. Without the effort of them, the site would have not been fit for competition. Also, I need to thank Jim Harrison and Dave Gird again for coming out the day before and helping to set up the course. Next time you see these folks, thank them for their hard work. Finally, thanks to all who came out to play, and to all who put in extra effort during the event (esp. Lu Geis for registration). 8 The Witches' Wail MiDiv Series News by Jason Rogers The first SPS & R&S Racing MiDiv Series event of the year was held in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium on the weekend of April 19th. Competitors were greeted with light drizzle and low temperatures on Saturday morning. Luckily it was also extremely windy and the course was almost completely dry by the time the event started. David Avard from Kansas region designed a long rolling course to use as much as possible of the 22 acres of asphalt available. Several Wichita members placed well at the event. Not surprisingly, Dave Green won the Super Stock class and had the fastest time in a passenger car. He bested an entire field of Stock, Street Prepared, and Prepared cars and was just 2 seconds behind the first place B-Modified (Formula Continental) open-wheeled racecar! That's what happens when fast drivers drive fast cars. Jim French finished 3rd in A-Stock in his '89 Corvette right behind Mark Hill in his S2000 in a very deep class. Your humble author got DFL in H-Stock while on street tires that did not grip well in the cold. However the lovely and talented Annie Rogers pulled off a class win in HStock Ladies in the same vehicle in a more shallow class. Art Martinez and Amo Carrasco brought their ex-trans Am road racer, an '82 Pontiac Trans Am, to the event and had great difficulty meeting the 95dB sound requirements for the site. A creative fix (was it a bunch of steel wool stuffed in the outlet?) allowed them to continue competing. Art managed to run faster times than Amo but both lost to class winner Dick Berger. G-Prepared featured the familiar battle between the Dodds and Bo Rader with Rader taking Got flares? Art & Amo roaring across Arrowhead Lot L in KC. the victory by 5 tenths. Paul Sherman took the trophy Photo courtesy of David Cosseboom from gotcone.com. in Street Touring Sport by just a tenth of a second (viva la Peon!), barely beating Dave Avard. Brian Meyer fought the good fight in Street Touring Ultra but his stone stock 2008 Subaru STi could not overcome the deep field of well-prepared Mitsubishi Evos and he finished mid-pack. Brian will avenge this loss once aftermarket shocks and anti-roll bars are available for the brand new Subaru chassis. Last but not least, Jim Harrison took a class win in B-Street Prepared in his classic '71 Corvette, easily besting another pack of Mitsubishi Evo's. We're coming up on Event #2 which will be hosted by your Wichita region in Salina the weekend of June 21st. Brian Meyer has graciously volunteered to run the event once more. If you're interested in volunteering contact Brian at bjm@gearz.org or (316) 773-1714.

9 A Letter from Duck Waddle March 31st, 2008 Just think (don't over do it); just 20 years ago in 1988 I wrote a 'thank you' letter to the Wail for the special attention I received from the after hours corner crew when I broke my leg at Road Yoder. Now just 20 years later I have another wonderful opportunity to say 'thank you' again. This time it is to the entire Wichita region for you thoughtfulness in presenting me with the truly outstanding wrist watch for my 50th year of SCCA membership. I stayed this long because of folks like each of you. Thank for being you. Sincerely, thank you all, Duck Waddle Have you heard about the MiDiv Recruitment & Retention Program? It s simple! We want to recruit and retain more workers for our club races. What does that mean to our current workers? We are going to give you FREE clothing for working as a thank you. We want you to wear that FREE clothing and show it to others so we can recruit and retain more workers for our club races! Where can you get more details and see the clothing you can get? At www.midiv.org. For more info contact Janice Rick at janice@wcsllc.net or (636) 225-3236
