WEYMOUTH AND DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE In this issue Handicap Cup Draw 3rd Round Budmouth College Visit Youth Coaching Update Dorset County results League tables December 2011 Newsletter Handicap Cup Draw The 3rd Round draw is as follows (wb 30 January 2012 ) Shipton Gorge B v Budmouth A Springfield C v Shipton Gorge A YMCA v Preston C Red Triangle A v Colliton B Captains will be sent scorecards and new averages the week before the ties. The averages calculated will also be used for the open handicap and veterans handicap in the forthcoming League Tournament on February 4 th. Division 3 leaders Budmouth A, who came through a last game decider 5-4 against the Land Registry in a 2 nd round cup match.

Budmouth College Visit A team of experienced coaches visited Budmouth School on December 8th. The coaches included lead coach James Lewis, Jo Kuzu, Stephen Foster, George The Bomb Downing (Currently England Youth no 9), Chloe Thomas (Welsh International), Chris Turner and Andy Millar. Budmouth coaching team Front L-R Chris, Steve, Jo, James, Chloe, George. 2 classes were taken either side of lunch. The students were first treated to a demonstration from George and Chloe, then split into groups to work on bat and ball skills and table work. At lunchtime, a table was set up in the dining area and students were treated to a demonstration and then invited to join in doubles matches. The after school club benefited from some extra coaches for a session. Chloe and George also hosted a Q + A session. George revealed he practiced for around 5 hours a day on fitness and on the table. Chloe reported her table tennis travels had taken her as far afield as India and Africa and many European countries. Later, James ran a 2 hour teachers introduction to table tennis course. Teachers from Budmouth College, Wey Valley, All Saints, Holy Trinity and Redlands Sports Centre attended. As well as running through the basic strokes and serves in table tennis, they were taken through various warm ups, games, match play and umpire exercises. The feedback was very good and hopefully the teachers are able to use some of this in future sessions at their school. There were also a few handy players in amongst the teachers who could well slot into teams next season! It was a fantastic day and the enthusiasm from pupils and teachers showed table tennis could prove to be a success in schools across the district. Hopefully the schools table tennis club will prosper and we have already seen new faces at coaching sessions at Ryemead Lane.

Many thanks to James Lewis and his team for the visit. Thanks also to Neil Hardisty for his help in organising this visit and his work on the day We are planning a similar visit to Wey Valley on January 10 th. Youth Coaching December 12 th The coaches were delighted that Steve Foster and Chloe Thomas accepted an invitation to attend the final coaching session of the year. This was the final session before a planned reorganisation of the youngsters into new groups and involved all age groups in a fun session. Steve and Chloe captained teams over several fun games and each coach helped a table in a series of singles matches. The main coaching objective of the evening was in relation to return of serves. This ended with players attempting to return Steve s and Chloe s serves which got progressively harder. They both gave a demonstration and later played a match showing what our youth players should be aiming towards! Steve and Chloe then stayed on for the senior session and welcomed challenges from all and were happy to chat and give advice to all. The feedback was very positive from both sessions. The Bournemouth area has a fantastic pool of talent, both of players and coaches, and we could look into the possibility of organising similar events in the future. Thanks to both Steve and Chloe for their time for a successful evening. In particular, I would like to thank Steve in his time as coach for the Ryemead Lane sessions. The players and new Level 1 coaches, who Steve mentored, have all learnt much from his experience. We wish Steve well in his future coaching activities, including future Level 3, and hopefully we see him back in Weymouth in the future. Dorset Veteran 2 Team in Division 4D Match Results for games at Kingfisher TT Club, Reading on 19 th November 2011. Dorset 2 were represented by Andy Mitchell, Ray Harwood, Derrick Dawson and Miranda Edwardes all from the Weymouth League. Dorset 2 lost 2-8 to Devon 2 Playing for Devon 2 were Kevin Nicholls, Phil Goulding, Peter Kneil and Sue Overton. Miranda Edwardes beat Sue Overton in the ladies singles, and Miranda and Andy Mitchell beat Peter Kneil and Sue Overton in the first mixed doubles. Miranda and Ray Harwood were unlucky in the mixed doubles losing 8 in the fifth! Dorset 2 lost 3-7 to Herefordshire 3 Playing for Herefordshire 3 were Stephen Brown, Brian Kitchener, Trevor Davies and Margaret Shock. Andy Mitchell beat Brian Kitchener. Miranda Edwardes beat Margaret Shock in the ladies singles and Miranda and Andy Mitchell beat Trevor Davies and Margaret Shock in the first mixed doubles. Andy and Derrick Dawson were unlucky in the mens doubles losing 13 in the fifth!

Youth Coaching 2012 The intention is to increase from 1 regular session to 4 sessions in the new year. The group is getting too big and abilities varied so we are proposing to add sessions and target them to age groups/abilities. Around 30 youngsters have attended sessions at Ryemead Lane and Tides since September. The reorganisation will give players a lot more table time and smaller groups will give the coaches a chance to give more individual help. Splitting to 4 groups will also give opportunities for new players to join. The current plan, subject to change, is as follows Monday 5pm 6pm Beginners Monday 6pm 7pm Intermediate/Budmouth A Age 15 and over Thursday 5pm 6pm Family/Beginner/Intermediate Thursday 6pm 7pm Intermediate/Budmouth B Age 13 and over Junior coaching continues at Bridport Leisure Centre. Miranda Edwardes runs the sessions on Wednesdays, in term time only, from 5pm to 6pm. Please book with the BLC on 01308 427464, in advance. Portchester School, Bournemouth hold Beginner and Intermediate coaching sessions every Saturday from 9.30am. The sessions are run by ETTA coach James Lewis. Up to 15 tables can be set up in the areas used and a separate table with robot. The price is 3 per session or 4 for both. A few of our juniors have been attending and are finding the sessions very worthwhile. We are also looking to try and send some of our youngsters to regional training at Waterside Sports Centre in Totton in February. Finally, Redlands Sports Centre are hoping to announce beginners table tennis coaching in the New Year. Further details to follow. Please contact Andy Millar for further details of any of the above Senior Practice Sessions Practice sessions will continue during the season at Ryemead Lane. The League subsidises the practice sessions at the Wyke base and they are open for all to attend. The price is just 1.50 for the evening and the times are between 7pm and 9pm. Please contact Sai Maganti for further details. Portchester School in Bournemouth run a monthly seniors session.
