BLUE HOSE VOLLEYBALL The Checklist P The Blue Hose will take on Gardner- Webb and Coastal Carolina this week. PC had thrilliing victories over each team a year ago. P PC is playing its last home nonconference match of the season Monday in a 12 p.m. contest against Bethune-Cookman. P Head coach Chris Belshe s 2010 team is the most experienced roster he s had returning since his arrival. Every starter returns from the 2009 squad, which boasted a 7-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Welcome To Smashtown MATCH NOTES On Tuesday evening, the Presbyterian College volleyball team opened up its home slate in the Templeton Center in front of the home fans. Since the start of the 2009 campaign, one of the many sayings was for the team to Smash. After throwing out Smashtown t-shirts at games a year ago, head coach Chris Belshe and his staff has taken it to the next level. This year, a 25 x 7 banner welcomes fans and the opposing teams to Smashtown. In The Swing Of Things After 12 consecutive matches away from the friendly confines of the Templeton Center to begin the 2010 season, PC has played back-to-back home contests at home. The Blue Hose will play one more home match this week, with it coming at a special time Monday. The PC- Bethune-Cookman contest will be a 12 p.m. start. Aug 31 Furman at Greenville, S.C. Despite just having two players in double figures for kills, the come-from-behind victory was a complete team effort. The squad combined to hit.215, dished out 54 assists, had 62 digs and nine blocks. For good measure, the team boasted six aces. For the second time in her young career, rookie Andrea Barman posted a career high and school-record tying nine blocks. Barman posted four solo blocks and five block assists in the five-set loss to Liberty Sept. 25. The previous school record of eight blocks by Amanda Kettles (which she has done twice) was set on the road. When Barman established the PC Division I school record of nine blocks against Western Carolina, it was also on the road. 1

However, she has taken it to the next level this season. Mabrey leads the team in kills and kills per set after just 14 matches and is on pace for a 400-kill season. On Sept. 21, she put together the best individual performance of a PC student-athlete since the change from the 30-point scoring system to the 25-point rally scoring. Against South Carolina State, Mabrey smashed home 28 kills on a.451 attack percentage. For good measure, she accounted for a double-double with 10 digs. Doing Double Duty In two home games, PC student-athletes have put together superb individual efforts. Presley Mabrey started things off with her first double-double of the year, accounting for 28 kills and 10 digs in the win over SCSU. In the home loss to Liberty, Kilee Ruppe had a double-double performance with 46 assists and 12 digs. For the season, PC studentathletes have accounted for eight double-double performances in 2010. Welcome Back! After missing the first 12 matches of the season, sophomore sensation Allison Brown came in during the third set of the home-opening contest against South Carolina State. She played the last three sets and notched five kills and three assists. She earned the start against Liberty and went for six kills, two blocks and two digs against the Flames. The Final Countdown Seniors Amanda Kettles and Lisa Shelley are getting closer and closer to 1,000 career kills. After a solid week, Kettles has 940 career smashes. Shelley has totaled 908 career kills, with 907 of them being while in PC attire. The Defense Can Relax 2 Kilee s KORNER Redshirt-senior Kilee Ruppe s blog, Kilee s Korner, is a behind the scenes look with a Division I student-athlete. The blog has pictures and is updated weekly. Go to www.gobluehose.com and click on the volleyball page. Once there, look on the left-hand side for the tab. When Amanda Kettles got on a roll against Bradley, the defense had a chance to relax. Kettles posted a careerhigh six aces in the 3-1 win. She now has 57 career aces including 16 this season. Kettles career high for a season is 26, which she accounted for last year. All-Tournament Team Honors Senior Amanda Kettles and sophomore Presley Mabrey earned all-tournament team honors at the CEFCU Classic. The duo helped the Blue Hose post a 2-1 mark, including a 3-1 win over host Bradley and a shutout against CAA foe Hofstra. Mabrey again earned all-tournament team honors at the 2010 Owls Invitational.

Chris Belshe Head Coach Fifth Season Chris Belshe is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Presbyterian College volleyball program, leading the Blue Hose through the transition to Division I. In his four years with the team, Belshe has compiled a 54-78 mark, including a 45-53 record at the Division I level. In 2009, Belshe guided the team to a 7-9 Big South Conference mark, including sweeps over Radford and Gardner-Webb. He coached two Big South Conference all-freshman team members in Allison Brown and Presley Mabrey while Ashley Dunlap garnered a spot on the all-academic team. PC recorded 13 wins in 2008. However, the most impressive performance of the season was the 3-2 victory over NCAA Tournament participant Liberty on Nov. 8 in Clinton, S.C. Prior to the season, Kelsey McKee was tabbed preseason all-conference. Amanda Kettles garnered second-team all-conference accolades while Rachel Lewis was named to the all-academic team in 2008. In 2007 Belshe led the squad to an impressive overall record of 20-13, and a 6-8 record against Big South opponents. Belshe also guided the team to tournament championships at Jacksonville, Wilmington and Western Carolina. By winning 15 straight matches, the 2007 squad moved into second place in the record books for longest winning streaks. The Blue Hose also went undefeated in the month of September and remained unbeaten in 26 straight sets, setting a new school record. Under his influence, the team went 4-0 in five game matches and was one of four schools in the Big South to have a 20 win season (with Liberty, Winthrop and High Point). Belshe is excited about the support and the direction in which the program is headed. Presbyterian College has created an environment of strong athletics and academics so that our student-athletes can really excel, not only on the court but in the classroom. The discipline, work ethic and passion it takes to be a Division I athlete carries over into all aspects of life, and I truly believe all our athletes will be well-prepared for anything they will face in the future. Belshe s first year at PC was severely affected by injuries, and the 2006 squad still managed nine wins. Freshman Julie Hollrah was named to the South Atlantic Conference s All-Freshman team, and setter Rachel Lewis was selected to the Preseason All-SAC First Team. Belshe came to Presbyterian with a strong background of volleyball coaching experience, having coached at the club, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Blue Hose, Belshe was the assistant coach for the Spanish River High School boys volleyball team in Boca Raton, Fla. and helped lead the Sharks to a state tournament title. In the fall of 2005, Belshe was a volunteer at Lynn University, training individual student-athletes and organizing practices. Belshe spent almost four years with Illini Elite volleyball club in Bloomington, Ill. and coached at various age levels, ranging from youth to elite high school teams. Three of his teams reached the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals. His 18-and-under squad qualified twice, becoming the first 18-andunder Illini Elite team to qualify for Nationals in 2003-04. All together, Belshe coached the 18-and-under Illini Elite club team from November of 2003 through July of 2005, garnering a slot every year in the list of top-10 regional teams. More impressively, every senior on his 18-and-under team committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball. A native of Wheaton, Ill., Belshe attended Illinois State University and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Finance. He and his wife, Jen, reside in Simpsonville, S.C., with their newborn son, Caelan Luke. 5
