PRIME DISPATCH Edition 85 01/10/2015 Compiled by Joe o Neill Miss De Vega (Lope De Vega Blonde Mafia) 2012 - Out of a full sister to top galloper Strawberry Boy, 3/4 sister to Danroad, Bullmore and ½ sister totippitaka and Newtown Jet I must say when I attended the Magic Millions Sale at the Gold Coast in January 2014 I was taken by the progeny of Lope De Vega. There were some really nice horses at the sale by the sire but the two that stood out were this filly and a colt out of Oomph. No one knew much about Lope De Vega and he stood at Patinack farm and he didn t really get the book of mares he deserved. The colt is more than handy and named Snoopy. The Lope De Vega s didn t jump out of the ground as two year olds as we expected but has started his three year old season off in good style with 5 individual winners from just 12 runners placing him 8 th on the 2 nd Season money list and 4 th on the winners list. Page 1

When I purchased Miss de Vega she was the most expensive horse I had ever purchased to syndicate and only wish I had the courage to buy Snoopy as well but you can t get them all. I have written before just how big a loss Patinack Farm was to the Australian breeding industry. The sires they stood included Casino Prince, the sire of All To Hard. Also, Husson, the sire of our smart sprinters Husson Eagle and Raido as well as the Group 1 winner Lucky Hussler and Lope De Vega. They also assembled a wonderful band of broodmares. There is a smoky amongst the Patinack team of sires named Monaco Consul. He is getting nice middle distance horses including the John Thompson trained Honesta which is running Saturday at headquarters in the Group 1 Flight Stakes where she is a live chance. Miss De Vega won a trial at Hawkesbury on Monday and is set to kick off her racing career in the next couple of weeks. Sadly we are unlikely to see Lope De Vega back in Australia. He is going very well in Europe where he is very highly regarded and currently 2 nd on the 2 nd season sire s list. VICTORIA IN SPRING A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT This week I will recommend a couple of good restaurants for you to go to while in Melbourne. I am a big fan of Owens Restaurant at the Railway Club Hotel in Port Melbourne. It has fantastic steaks and a great wine list. Make sure you book ahead as it does get very busy particularly on a Friday. Lau s Kitchen at St Kilda is a wonderful Asian restaurant and Like Owen s has an excellent wine list. Again you will need to book as it gets very busy and has two sittings at night. The food is simply superb. The Tea House in China Town is another very good eating house and reasonably priced. Some of the better Chinese Restaurants can get expensive. I went there four times during Cup week last year for dinner. Their crayfish omelette on the banquet menu is as god as you will get. HINCHINBROOK AND I AM INVINCIBLE Over the past couple of years I have supported these sires strongly and the results their progeny are getting show that our support was justified. Later in this dispatch I have included information on two fillies I have purchased a Hinchinbrook for John Thompson and an I Am Invincible for Darren Weir. These are two great hopes and represent two of the most exciting sires we have seen in Australia for years. In total we have 11 horses in our team by these horses with nine un-raced but watch this space over the next few weeks as we start to step them out. Page 2

Look at some of the achievements these two young horses and their progeny have collected already: 2013/14 I Am Invincible Champion First Season Sire in Australia in a field of 52 first season sires with I Am Invincible getting duel Group 1 winner and champion Sprinter Brazen Beau in his first crop. He had as many individual winners in his first crop as the next three on the List. In 2014/15 he continued to get the winners with him having more individual winners than any of the other 76 on the 2 nd Season List. He was 3 rd to Fastnet Rock and Street Cry on the 3 year old List. Yesterday at Rosehill we may have witnessed a real star in the making with his son Hellbent demolishing his opposition. 2014/15 Hinchinbrook Champion First Season Sire in Australia in a field of 54 first season sires with Hinchinbrook getting the Group 1 winner and possibly the best three year old in Australia in Press Statement in his first crop. He also has the outstanding filly Flippant. This season he has already won one of the two, two year old races run in Australia with a number of juveniles set to compete over the weekend. WHAT A WEEKEND I can t remember a better weekend of sport than we have coming up over the next few days. Good luck to our friends who have teams competing in the AFL and NRL Grand Finals over the weekend. I m a Hawks supporter and hope they can put the Weagles to bed. Queensland has dominated NSW over the past decade in State Of Origin Rugby League and it was only a matter of time before two Queensland sides played in the NRL Grand Final. I hope the Cowboys win the title. North Queensland is a great Rugby League nursery and the locals really support their side. Good luck to them. Johnathon Thurston has achieved just about honour there is to in win in the game. He is a super star and in my opinion rates up there with Wally Lewis, Arthur Beetson, Steve Rogers and Andrew Johns as the best players I have been lucky enough to watch play the great game. Watching Thurston play is like watching a ping pong ball out of control, you never know where it will bounce. Probably the most important game over the weekend will be the Wallabies clash with England in the Rugby World Cup. A win by Australia assures it of a quarter final spot and almost certainly knocks England out of the competition. I love the way the Wallabies are playing. Michael Cheika has done a great job with the Australian scrum and if our forwards set a solid platform the backs should have plenty of room to weave their magic. England has a lot to play for and is likely to try to force the Wallabies into a fierce forward battle. Let s hope we learned something from our tragic loss against England in the quarter final on 6 October 2007 when we were sucked into playing boring Northern Hemisphere Rugby dominated with scrummaging rather than the open attacking style football we are renowned for. I hope England play Sam Burgess in the centres. He is their weak link and Matt Giteau is a polished centre who might just leave big Sam wondering why he isn t sitting on the beach at Bondi enjoying the sunshine rather than being made to look foolish as Giteau gives him the run around. Page 3

RACING The quality of racing being served up at present is terrific and this weekend sees the start of the two year old racing getting into full swing. We have metropolitan two year old races at Randwick ($132,000), Flemington ($151,000), Doomben ($89,000), Morphettville ($69,000) and Belmont ($73,000). The price in brackets is the average purchase price of the yearlings that were sold through the sales. The most expensive was Slumber Party (Randwick) at $620,000 and least expensive White Feather (Morphettville) at $6,000. In total 40 of the 62 runners were sold at the sales. We will be represented by Invincible Al at Morphettville which I purchased privately for $55,000 from Yarraman Park. He still does a bit wrong but has a great attitude and is a cocky little bloke. Good luck to him and his anxious group of owners. Once again Patrick Payne has done a good job with the colt. The two previous two year olds Patrick has trained for us were Husson Eagle and Atalanta Miss. Let s hope this boy has some of their ability. Invincible Al is our only runner for the weekend. I love two year old racing as it gives me a chance to see how close my judgement was when assessing the yearlings on offer earlier in the year. I made the right call in both 2013/14 and 2014/15 with I Am Invincible and Hinchinbrook and I am on record saying that Smart Missile will be leading first season sire this year. An interesting runner is Bliss Point. On type she was as good a filly as was on offer at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale in January but her dam had a woeful record as a producer with her 11 previous foals winning just four races. If you are Randwick on Saturday have a look at her. I inspected her five times at the sale but couldn t get my head around her dam s record. Good luck to our trainers this weekend. John Thompson and Kris Lees have some really good chances at Randwick in big races. Tony McEvoy has a number of runners and Darren Weir just keeps getting winners. What a win by Stratum Star last weekend in the Group 1 Rupert Clark Stakes with Lucky Hussler not far off a win. MAGIC MILLIONS RACEDAY The $10 million Magic Millions day of racing to be held on the Gold Coast in January is only 16 weeks away. We are looking at targeting the day with some of our runners. Husson Eagle is being aimed towards the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Sprint and won t be seen during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. We have quite a few Magic Millions qualified horses on our books and as we get closer will be steering some of these towards the day. It is a big day and I m not in a position to be able to get tickets to the day or get clients into functions. We have had some success in the past winning Magic Millions races with Hidden Wonder, Rose Of Scotland, Atalanta Miss and Rumeron. If you are planning to head up for the Magic Millions and want to enjoy the day get in touch with the Gold Coast Turf Club and book your tickets or lunch packages. Check out the link: Page 4

http://www.gctc.com.au/event/2016-jeep-magic-millions/january-2016/406 HINCHINBROOK PRINCESS ANNA FILLY I wrote last week that I had purchased two fillies to be the start of our 2016 team. The first of these is a Hinchinbrook filly out of the Encosta de Lago filly Princess Anna. See the details on her below: The Filly Hinchinbrook filly out of Princess Anna 2014 John Thompson to train at Randwick 10% shares $7,900 5% shares $3,950 This filly is a strong nicely balanced athlete that gets around well and has a real presence about her. She is very strong behind and through the hocks which is a characteristic of the progeny of Hinchinbrook. She vetted out without any issues and was reared at Yarraman Park one of Australia s most well respected boutique nurseries. Page 5

The filly is an August foal and will be broken in in February/ March of 2016 with a view to giving her every chance to run as a two year old. She comes from a very precocious family with her dam s ½ sister winning stakes races twice as a two year old and being placed in the $1million Gold Coast Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic. Hinchinbrook After I inspected the yearlings by the first season sires in 2013 I made the prediction that Hinchinbrook would be Australia s leading first season sire. He didn t let me down winning the title in a field of over 50 contenders for the title. This was a wonderful effort considering the horse didn t serve a big book of mares and stood at a modest fee. A lot of the credit for his success goes to the team at Yarraman Park. The farm consistently punches above its weight with the yearlings coming off the farm setting the benchmark across our industry. It should be remembered Yarraman Park s I Am Invincible won the title in the previous season. In winning the title Hinchinbrook not only got early runners but high class juveniles including the Group 1 winner Press statement and multiple stakes winner Flippant. Hinchinbrook was a top class juvenile winning the Group III AJC Skyline Stakes and Listed Canonbury Stakes before being the first colt home when fourth to Crystal Lily in the Group I STC Golden Slipper and was then third in the Group I AJC Sires Produce Stakes. He then trained on at three for Group I placings in the AJC All Aged Stakes, MRC Oakleigh Plate and MVRC William Reid Stakes, before being injured in the UK while preparing for Royal Ascot and retiring with earnings in excess of $590,000. He is a three-quarter brother to leading young sire Snitzel and Group III winner Viennese by champion sire Fastnet Rock from stakes-winning sprinter Snippets Lass. Snippet s Lass was the best mare trained by Bill Mitchell while I was with him and had one of the very best pedigrees in Australia. While she was only small in stature she was big on quality and had a heart as big as herself. It looks as though Hinchinbrook will continue the great start he had in his first season with one of the most impressive trial winners to my eye to date has been the Hinchinbrook filly Divajeu at Randwick recently. She was a relatively inexpensive purchase from the January Magic Millions Sale. I have been very big supporter of Hinchinbrook and have three two year old fillies at various stages of their development as well as two three year olds including Shining Brooke who is being prepared for the Spring Carnival. Page 6

Hinchinbrook really impresses me and during my visits to the Hunter over the past few months I have left each time with the feeling that he is going to be a great success at stud. I can t get enough of them!!! Princess Anna Princess Anna was by Encosta de Lago. Princess Anna is very well related and was a $200,000 Easter yearling. This is her first foal which I love buying. Horses bred on this cross include the Group or Stakes winners Musir, Empress Rock, Pheidon, Killua Castle, Proisir, Beneteau, Sookie, Instinction, Essington, Mohave, Ghost, Peeping, Inner Warrior, Frespanol, Burnstone. As I wrote earlier Princess Anna comes from a very precocious two year old family that includes the outstanding racehorses Faith Hill, Black Minx, Simply Believe, Mr Make Believe, Chosen Moment, Truly Believe, Pure Of Heart and the successful sire Lion Hunter. It is important to note the 2 nd and 3 rd dams both won high class stakes races with the conversion rate of winners to runners in the first 4 dams being very good when you consider the level that they raced at. Encosta de Lago is proving to be one of our very best broodmare sires and is currently placed 2 nd behind Flying Spur on the broodmare sires list. The previous three seasons has seen him progress from 14 th to 5 th to 4 th and now 2 nd on this highly competitive list. His best to race this season is Japonisme. It isn t surprising for him to be so well up on the list as he offers a terrific outcross to the dozens of sons and grandsons of Danehill standing here in Australia. Encosta de Lago has also been a highly successful sire in his own right. I am really looking forward to this filly racing and feel I purchased her well under the odds. I Am Invincible filly out of Belle Amici 2014 Darren Weir to train in Victoria 10 shares @ $10,500 Page 9

The filly pictured above is a terrific filly by the outstanding young sire I Am Invincible from the well related Catbird mare Belle Amici. I have inspected her four times at Yarraman Park since May and was keen to purchase her. She is a very good type of filly with a good hindquarter, great conformation and a attractive head. She vetted out without any issues and was reared at Yarraman Park one of Australia s most well respected boutique nurseries. The filly is an October foal and will be broken in in February/ March of 2016 with a view to giving her every chance to run as a two year old. She comes from a very precocious family with Belle Amici s ½ brother Restless winning as a two year old and being stakes placed as well. He was placed in six of his seven starts as a two year old and went on to win 10 races including four at Group or stakes level and $578,305 in stakes money. The first three dams have had 17 to race with 15 individual winners which is exceptional. To me this looks Belle Amici s best mating. I Am Invincible I Am Invincible was Australia s Leading First season Sire in 2013/14 Season by both stakes money and individual winners. In fact in his first season he gapped the opposition with as many winners as the next three sires on the list. In his second season he continued the good work finishing 2 nd to Medaglia d Oro for the stakes earnings. Medaglia d Oro figures were somewhat distorted with him having the Golden Slipper winner which accounted for over half his stakes earnings. Once again I Am Invincible had the most individual winners in this year. 55.1% of I Am Invincible s runners won during the season with him being the only sire in the top 10 on the 2 nd season list standing in Australia to break the half century. At the completion of the 2014/15 Season he was 3 rd to Fastnet Rock and Street Cry on the National 3 Year Old List with both these sires having far stronger books of mares than I Am Invincible. I Am Invincible s duel Group 1 winning son Brazen Beau has been purchased by Darley and is standing this season at a service fee of $44,000. He was also placed 2 nd in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. I Am invincible had his service fee raised to $55,000 this breeding season and was fully booked out in a matter of days and Yarraman Park are already taking bookings for next season. Page 10

Belle Amici As I wrote earlier Belle Amici is well related and by the Golden Slipper winner Catbird. Catbird was a very well bred horse with a particularly strong female line. Catbird s stud career was cut short but he did a good job at stud and he is proving to be a very capable broodmare sire with the horses of the Group and Stakes of the calibre of Hawkspur, Catkins, Mystic Prince, Lady Royale, Atacama, Real Charm, Pinch River, Silversands and Entisaar coming from his daughters. Belle Amici is out of the outstanding race mare Let s Hurry the winner of 8 races including three at Group 2 level and one at Group 3 level. She was also placed twice at Group 1 level and was 4 th in the VRC Oaks and SAJC Goodwood Handicap. All seven of her foals to race were winners. One of the strong characteristics of I Am Invincible is that he crosses well with almost any sire line and he has in most cases upgraded the performance of the mares he has served. In fact there is no particular sire line that stands out with his 15 stakes performers to date being represented by 14 different broodmare sires. It should be remembered he stood for only $11,000 in his first season and while he was a standout as a type didn t get the A grade mares many of the other first season sires received. This has now changed and I am expecting his progeny which pass the vet to be out of our reach in next year s yearling sales. I am thrilled to have this filly join our team and look forward to her wearing our colours. Page 11
