INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #23 / Road Game #15 Indianapolis Indians (11-11) at Lehigh Valley IronPigs (9-12) Saturday, May 1, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 6:35 p.m. EDT Coca-Cola Park -- Allentown, PA Indians LHP Donnie Veal (1-1, 3.22 ERA) vs. IronPigs RHP Ryan Vogelsong (0-1, 3.15 ERA) -------------- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Donnie Veal, has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his four starts for the Tribe this season... The left hander has been particularly good over his last two starts as he has posted a 1-0 record, 2.19 ERA (3 ER in 12.1 IP) allowed only seven hits and struck out nine over 12.1 innings of work... Veal has also been dominant against left handed batters all season as he has held them to a.091 batting average (1-for-11) and has not surrendered a walk in 11 at-bats against him... The southpaw has also been excellent with the bases empty, having held opposing hitters to a.146 average (7-for-48) and surrendering only one extra-base hit when no one is on-base, while he has also turned in superior stats when he is able to get ahead in the count as opponents are hitting just.087 (2-for-23) with nine strikeouts and no walks when Veal puts them in a hole. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Veal in tonight s contest is former Indianapolis Indians pitcher and current IronPigs starter Ryan Vogelsong... Vogelsong, who went 4-5 with a 2.66 ERA over 11 appearances (10 starts) with the Tribe during the 2006 season, faces off against his old squad for the first time in his career... The right hander, who is 0-1 with a 3.15 ERA (7 ER in 20.0 IP) over four starts for Lehigh Valley this season, spent last season pitching for Orix in Japan, where he went 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 30 appearances... Just like his counterpart, Vogelsong has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his four starts this season, but has struggled with his control having walked 18 batters in his 20 innings of work. LIFE IN LEHIGH: Over the first two seasons of baseball in Lehigh Valley (2008-2009), the Indians have struggled in their time at Coca-Cola Park as they have posted a 2-6 record and have been outscored 42 to 28 and out hit 74 to 71... Overall, since the Tribe became affiliated with the Pirates in 2005 they have posted an 8-12 record against the Philadelphia Phillies Triple-A farm club, despite outscoring their Phillies Triple-A opponents 96-81 and outhitting them 182 to 173. HITTING AGAINST THE HOGS: In the two seasons of baseball in Lehigh Valley four current Indians batters have faced off against IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park as members of the Tribe... INF/OF Neil Walker has posted a.333 batting average (5-for-15) with four runs in four games played, 1B/OF Steve Pearce has turned in a.363 average (4-for-11) with three doubles and two RBI in three games played, C Erik Kratz has posted a.286 average (4-for-14) with one run, and two RBI in four games played and OF/1B Brian Myrow has posted a.143 average (1-for-7) with a solo home run in two games played. UP TO THE TASK: Despite suffering the loss in last night s contest, the Tribe bullpen has still, posted fantastic numbers of the Indians last seven games as Indianapolis relievers have combined for a 2.15 ERA (7 ER in 29.1 IP) in those contests The pen has earned two wins, recorded four saves struck out 30 total batters, while having allowed only 20 hits and 14 walks over the seven-game stretch Of the nine players to pitch out of the Indians bullpen during the streak, five have held opponents scoreless: Vinnie Chulk (2.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 SO), Mike Dubee (1.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB), Erik Kratz (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB), Wil Ledezma (3.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 SO) and Justin Thomas (4.2, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 SO). WALKING OVER THE COMPETITION: Following his 1-for-5 effort on Thursday night, INF Neil Walker has now reached base in 10 consecutive games The utility infielder has reached base via a hit in nine of the 10 contests and is hitting.355 (16-for-45) with five runs scored, five doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI and five stolen bases during the streak... Walker has also already swiped seven bases on the season, one more than his entire total for last season and only three behind his career season best of 10, which he accomplished during his MVP season with the Indians in 2008. WALK THIS WAY: After struggling to find his stroke through the Tribe s first 15 games this season (.196 BA, 1 HR, 3 RBI), OF/1B Brian Myrow seems to have turned a corner as he has gone 3-for-10 with a run, a home run and six RBI over his last three games... The left handed slugger has however never lost his patience at the plate, which led him to three on-base percentage titles over the last three seasons... Myrow has now drawn a walk in three straight contests and currently ranks seventh in the International League with 14 walks on the season... Myrow is also the only player in the International League to have five contests where he has collected multiple walks with four players having posted multiple walks in four separate games this season. LUKE LEADS THE WAY: Tribe C Luke Carlin went 2-for-3 with two RBI in last night s series finale in Pawtucket to improve his batting average to.378 (17-for- 45) on the season... Carlin has also sped his way to three steals this season, which ties him with Columbus C Carlos Santana for the International League lead in steals among catchers, and is just one off his career season high of four swipes that he accomplished with Triple-A Reno last season, while also already equaling 1/3 of his entire career steals total... The switch hitter s.378 batting average is the best among all IL backstops with at least 20 at-bats on the season, while his 17 hits currently rank him fourth among all catchers in the league. THANK GOODNESS ITS FRIDAY: Tribe 2B Brian Friday went 1-for-4 in last night s contest to extend his hitting streak to seven games... During his streak, Friday is batting.375 (9-for-24) with five runs and three RBI... It is the longest streak for the right hander since he hit safely in 10 straight for Double-A Altoona from August 7 to August 20 last season. PEARCE CONTINUES TO POUND: Indians 1B/OF Steve Pearce turned in his ninth multi-hit effort in last night s series finale against Pawtucket as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored... Both of Pearce s base knocks in last night s contest were doubles, which was the fourth time this season that Pearce has collected two two-baggers and which also pushed his International League leading doubles total to 11 on the season.. Overall Pearce has failed to reach base in only one contest this season and has failed to collect a base hit in only five, however in those five hitless games, the right handed slugger has earned nine walks, including individual games of three and four walks.
