This is the first season they count as an NCAA opponent. When they made the move from NAIA to NCAA II, Mary moved from the DAC to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Marauders will bring a 3-5 overall record to Billings where they will play the Yellowjackets on Friday and Rocky Mountain on Saturday. After winning their season opener against Jamestown, the Marauders dropped their next five games. Two of the five losses were to nationally ranked NCAA II teams. They snapped the losing streak last week with a pair of NSIC wins to even their conference record at 2-2. Mary defeated Southwest Minnesota State, 85-77, on Friday and downed Wayne State, 67-66, on Saturday. Both games were at home. Mary is 3-1 at home but is still seeking its first road win. The Marauders average 69.8 points per game while allowing 75.1. They have three players averaging double figures, led by Nicci Landdeck s 16.3 ppg. The 5 11 junior is shooting 62 percent from the field and also leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 rpg. She was named the NSIC s player of the week last week. Corrie Villegas, a transfer from University of Montana, is averaging 15.5 ppg and leads the team in 3-point shooting. The Polson, Mont., native is averaging 2.6 made 3-pointers per game and is shooting almost 45 percent from behind the arc. Freshman guard Kayla Rogers adds 10.1 points and 2.1 threes per game. Landdeck, Villegas, and Rogers have started all eight games this season. Ashley Fridley has averaged 4.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in seven starts. Former Yellowjacket Alyssa Root is a senior for the Marauders. She has appeared in seven games, averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds. Opponent Series Records: MSU-Billings Wins: 1 Mary Wins: 2 Last Meeting: Mary 73, MSUB 60 (Feb. 9, 1984 at Bismarck) Streaks: Despite their relatively close proximity, the Yellowjackets and Marauders have met just three times with all three games coming in the mid-1980s. Mary won the first meeting and the last meeting. The Week in Review The Lady Yellowjackets had an explosive week, rolling up 164 points in two wins that moved them over.500 for the first time this season. On Wednesday they held off a feisty Montana State-Northern team, 80-67 at home. The Jackets traveled to Washington at the end of the week where they downed St. Martin s University 84-68 on Saturday. The week marked the Jackets first back-to-back wins of the season as well as their first road win of the year. Inside-outside balance carried the Jackets over the Lights of MSU-Northern. Four players scored in double figures, led by Alira Carpenter s 28 points and five 3-pointers. Both were career highs for the sophomore guard. Sophomore point guard Jetton Meadors also posted career highs with 16 points and four 3-pointers. As a team the Jackets made 11 threes in the game, winning free pizzas for everyone in attendance. Pizza Hut sponsored the game and gave away coupons for a free pizza if the Yellowjackets made 10 or more 3-pointers. While the Jacket guards were hitting from long range, the inside tandem of Michelle Lieber and Dani Henderson scored 12 and 10 points respectively. On Saturday, the Yellowjackets overcame a slow start to pull away from St. Martin s. MSUB shot 51 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line while holding the Saints to just a 32 percent field goal percentage. Five players scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack for the Jackets. Jen Smith came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points. She was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Lieber, Carpenter, and Meadors each netted 14 points, and Shantell Marquis added 12. Marquis and Meadors each had five assists. Tip Ins Alira Carpenter was named the Heartland Conference player of the week for averaging 21.0 ppg in two wins...the Yellowjackets scored at least 80 points in both of last week s games and have hit the 80 point mark in four of seven games on the season. It s too early in the season to start talking school records, but we ll do it anyway. The Jackets are currently averaging 75.1 ppg, which would rank second in school history if that average holds for the entire season. The top scoring team in school history was the 1997-98 squad that averaged 80.0 ppg. Last season s Jackets rank fourth in the record books at 72.6 ppg.with 18 three-pointers in their last two games, the Jackets jacked their per game average for made 3-pointers to 8.1. Last year s team, the most prolific 3-point shooting team in school history, made 8.3 per game.msub is cashing in at the free throw line, hitting 77.4 percent of their attempts through seven games. The Jackets were 25-of-32 at St. Martin s on Saturday. Last year s team set the current school record for free throw percentage at 74.4 percent.freshman forward Dani Henderson finally missed a free throw last week. One. She entered the week having made all 12 of her attempts on the season. She went 7-of-8 from the stripe on Saturday, lowering her season free throw percentage to 95.0 percent.henderson isn t the only Yellowjacket in a groove at the free throw line. Considering these free throw percentages, it will be tough for opponents to decide who to foul if they re trailing late in the game: Meadors, 91.7; Lieber, 83.3; Carpenter, 78.6; Smith, 77.3.Jen Smith, at least so far, has dramatically improved her free throw shooting over last season. As a freshman she connected on just 57.6 percent from the line. Including her 7-of-8 showing on Saturday she is 17-of-22 from the line this season.along with their sharp shooting from the line, the Jackets are starting to find a rhythm from behind the arc as well. In the last two games they were a combined 18-of-42 (42.9 percent), and for the season they are shooting 38.8 percent. Sophomore point guard Jetton Meadors has notched career highs the last two games from 3-point range, going 4-of-5 against MSU-Northern and 4-of-6 against St. Martin s. She was 1-of-7 from long range as a freshman. Meadors, Carpenter, Smith, and Shantell Marquis are all shooting at least 40 percent from 3-point range.for the obscure stat fact of the week, how about freshman guard Shantell Marquis with five blocked shots in seven games? She has nearly half the teams blocks and also leads the team with 10 steals.
