Box 5969, Oxnard CA 93036 A newsletter produced for the Members of the Ventura Rheinland Club, the German-American Club of Ventura County, California.

From the President: Ralf Moll July is always a great month, because it is filled with two fun and popular events! Our Annual Picnic was fabulous! Huge thanks go out to the wonderful cooking crew of Klaus Roerich, John Hofrath and Katharina Wutsch. The tri tip was prepared to perfection using the secret ingredient...good beer; and the chicken was delicious! We also thank the Ladybugs and other guests who provided the delicious desserts! Thank you, Papa Heinz, Poldi Hockenmaier and Ursula Kros for providing the lively accordion music! Thank you also to everyone who donated raffle prizes and everyone who helped in any capacity! We truly appreciate each and every one of you! The bean guessing contest is always fun where the guesses run the gamut from too little to too much! Congratulations and a bottle of wine was presented to Gretel Stoeckert for guessing the exact number of beans! The Hawaiian Dance was certainly filled with the aloha spirit! Your festive spirit and colorful outfits transported us to the Islands! The Hula Dancing competition was a big treat for us all! Buddy, our Knight of Columbus partner, was named the best male hula dancer and received a bottle of wine for his efforts. He even wore his own grass skirt! Annie, one of our favorite regular guests, took the best female hula dancer title and a bottle of wine. It really was fun to see all of the contestants getting into the music and the spirit! Dancing Makes You Smarter...Join Us! The following are excerpts from an article written by Richard Powers entitled Use It or Lose It: Dancing Makes Your Smarter. The article was shared by Rosario Schmieder, VRC member. or centuries, dance manuals and other writings Fhave lauded the health benefits of dancing, usually as physical exercise. More recently, other health benefits such as stress reduction and an increased serotonin level (sense of well-being) have been determined. Most recently, it has been uncovered that frequent dancing makes us smarter. Here are the statistics: Bicycling/Swimming: 0% reduced risk Playing Golf: 0% reduced risk Reading: 35% reduced risk Crossword Puzzles: 47% reduced risk Frequent Dancing: 76% reduced risk A major study added to the growing evidence that stimulating one s mind can ward off Alzheimer s disease and other dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit. Dancing also increase cognitive acuity at all ages. In fact, in a 21-year study of senior citizens funded by the National Institute on Aging, it was determined that the only physical activity to offer protection against dementia was frequent dancing. Well, we already knew that the Ventura Rheinland Club was fun; now we know that it is good for us too! Membership is a smart decision that you can share with your family and friends! Let them know how much you care about their health and well-being and invite them to become a part of our club.
