This is day five of an 18-day stretch without a trip to the airport, as the next road trip features two games at the White Sox (this Wednesday and Thursday) and three games in Milwaukee (beginning Friday), a bus ride, followed by a six-game homestand August 1-6. The Cubs have 33 games remaining at home and 31 games left on the road Chicago has more home games remaining than any other team in the N.L. Central. Of the 64 games remaining for the Cubs this season, 43 are against teams currently owning a record that is below.500, or 67 percent of them. This is also the fifth day of a stretch in which the Cubs play 18 of 29 games at Wrigley Field through August 20. SINCE THE BREAK: The Cubs have emerged from the All-Star Break with an 8-2 record (.800), tied with the Dodgers for the best record in baseball the Nationals are third (7-2/.778) followed by the Pirates (8-3/.727). Chicago began the season s second half with a 5.5-game deficit in the N.L. Central Division behind Milwaukee the Cubs now sit a half game back of the Brewers. Among active pitchers, Lackey ranks third in starts, wins (182) and innings pitched (2,773.1), fifth in strikeouts (2,232) and ninth in complete games (18). Lackey is one of three active pitchers with at least 400 starts and 2,500 innings pitched, joining Bartolo Colon and CC Sabathia. Lackey is also one of 17 active pitchers to have at least one win against all 30 major league teams. CENTRAL CASTING: Of Chicago s 64 games remaining, more than half (34) are against N.L. Central foes the Cubs are 24-18 against teams from the N.L. Central this season, a.571 winning percentage and the best record any N.L. Central team currently has against its own division (Cincinnati is next closest with a.528 winning percentage within the division). FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Cubs have allowed 80 runs in the first inning this season covering 98 games yet have enjoyed a scoreless first each of their 10 games after the All-Star Break the Cubs allowed a total of 71 first-inning runs in their 162 games last year. THAT S EITHER HERE OR THERE: The Cubs are 26-22 at home compared to a 25-25 road mark this season Chicago started 4-6 at the Friendly Confines, but has gone 22-16 in its last 38 games at Wrigley Field since May 2 conversely, the Cubs began their road schedule by winning eight of their first 11 games through April 25, but have since gone just 17-22 away from home, a stretch that included their first nine-game road losing streak since 2012. The Cubs are one of just five N.L. teams with.500 or better records both at home and on the road they join the Nationals (26-19 home, 33-19 road), the Brewers (28-24, 25-24), the Dodgers (42-13, 27-18) and Rockies (31-19, 27-24). WHERE THERE S A WILL : Willson Contreras on Sunday belted his 15th homer of the season, the most for any N.L. catcher and secondmost among all major league backstops behind Kansas City s Salvador Perez, who has 20 home runs this season. Contreras leads the club with both 14 go-ahead RBI and eight game-winning RBI this season, including his two-run homer Sunday. Since making his debut on June 17 of last year, Contreras has produced an.831 OPS that s the third-highest of any N.L. catcher behind the Dodgers Yasmani Grandal (.858) and the Giants Buster Posey (.845). Elias notes that, including Sunday night s homer, Contreras has eight homers in 63 at-bats against St. Louis, an average of one homer every 7.9 at-bats the only players with a higher home run rate against one team since 2016 (min. 60 AB) are Yasmani Grandal against San Diego (one HR every 7.3 AB) and Khris Davis against Texas (7.8). THERE S A WADE: With his save Sunday night, Cubs closer Wade Davis has set the single-season franchise record for consecutive save chances converted, as he s been successful in his first 20 opportunities this year that surpasses Flash Gordon in 2001, Ryan Dempster in 2005 and Carlos Marmol in 2012, all of whom had 19-straight successful save chances in a single campaign. The franchise mark for consecutive save chances converted is held by Dempster (26 straight in the 2005-06 seasons) Davis 20- straight save conversions are tied for fourth-longest in club history overall. 20 X 5: Anthony Rizzo this season already has become just the fourth Cubs left-handed batter to reach the 20-homer mark at least five times he joins: Hall of Famer Billy Williams (13 times), Bill Nicholson (six times) and Leon Durham (five times).
