Georgia wrapped up the indoor portion of the 2012-13 campaign last weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle. The Bulldogs will take on the Paladins on Sun., Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. before turning around to meet ETSU on Mon., Feb. 25 at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be held outdoors, weather permitting, and will include live video and live stat coverage on Georgiadogs.com in addition to the Georgia Tennis Live Chat. Admission is free and open to the public. LOOKING AT FURMAN: The Paladins enter the weekend at 2-4 overall, and snapped a four-match losing streak last time out in collecting a 5-2 win over Presbyterian on Feb. 10. Furman will meet Alabama on Saturday before making the trip to Athens. Furman does not currently have any players ranked in the ITA singles or doubles poll. Statistically, Furman has four players with two wins each in the dual match season to lead the way in singles, while in doubles the team of Joel Cook and Andrew Mellow, at 2-2, are Furman s top duo. Georgia boasts a perfect 35-0 all-time record vs. Furman, including last season s 6-1 win in Athens. LOOKING AT ETSU: East Tennessee State is 4-3 overall in 2013 following a 4-2 loss to Nebraska on Feb. 16. The Bucs were ranked No. 74 in the ITA team rankings on Feb. 5 before sliding out in the most recent poll. The team currently has no players ranked individually. On the stat sheet, five ETSU players have collected double-digit wins, led by Rogerio Ribeiro with a singles record of 18-10. Roger Ordeig is next with 15. In doubles, the team of Juan Ramirez and Jorge Varon leads the way for the Bucs with their 12-4 record in 2012-13, including a 3-2 mark in dual matches playing at No. 2. Georgia is 7-0 in the series vs. ETSU, most recently collecting a 6-1 win over the Bucs in 2012 in Athens at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility. LAST TIME OUT: The Georgia men s tennis team (5-3) went 1-2 on the weekend at the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, earning a 4-0 win over Ole Miss in the round of 16 last Friday before suffering a 4-1 setback to No. 3 UCLA in the quarterfinals Saturday and a hard-fought 4-2 loss to Kentucky Sunday in the quarterfinal consolation round. The Bulldogs were without senior KU Singh on the trip and without freshman Nick Wood for the UCLA match, but still managed to win the doubles

YOUNG PUPS: Georgia has gotten strong play at the outset of the season from the team s freshmen. Rookie Ben Wagland has compiled a 12-5 mark overall and a 4-2 record in dual matches, including a clinch vs. VCU to send Georgia back to National Indoors. Austin Smith is 11-5 overall and 4-2 in duals, while Nick Wood - who joined the team in January - is 4-1. IN THE RANKINGS: Georgia came in at No. 8 in the Feb. 19 edition of the ITA team ranking after being ranked No. 6 for each of the first four polls in 2013. With that, the Bulldogs have now been ranked in the top six every week since May 2, 2011 and in the top-10 since March 29, 2011. Individually, Georgia boasts two players in the singles top 25 in KU Singh (No. 8) and Nathan Pasha (No. 21). In doubles, the team of Pieters and freshman Ben Wagland are No. 5 while Singh and Pasha are No. 27 and Wagland and Pasha No. 29. RECAPPING THE FALL: The Georgia men s tennis team s fall season was highlighted by the run of junior Hernus Pieters and freshman Ben Wagland to the doubles final of the ITA National Indoor Championships in New York in November. Earlier in the fall, the duo won the consolation draw of the All American Championships in Tulsa to punch their ticket to Indoors, while sophomore Nathan Pasha won three qualifying matches to reach the singles main draw in Tulsa. Meanwhile, the four Bulldog freshmen played well at the Southern Intercollegiates, Bulldog Scramble, and ITA Southeast Regional as they geared up for their first collegiate dual match seasons. BULLDOGS PICKED TO WIN SEC EAST: A vote of the league s 13 head coaches has selected the sixth-ranked Georgia men s tennis team the early favorite the win the Southeastern Conference s Eastern Division in 2013, the league office announced. The reigning SEC Tournament champions and NCAA quarterfinalists received 65 total points including three first-place votes to place them atop the competitive SEC East, while Ole Miss was picked to win the West as well as the overall conference championship with 74. Tabbed to finish behind Georgia in the East is Tennessee (47), Florida (42), Kentucky (37), Vanderbilt (27), and South Carolina (13). The rest of the West behind the Rebels is Mississippi State (63), Texas A&M (53), Auburn (46), LSU (34), Alabama (22), and Arkansas (16). The preseason poll is a compilation of head coach votes using a 6-5-4-3-2-1 ranking system in the East and 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 in the West, which added Texas A&M this season. The other conference newcomer Missouri does not sponsor men s tennis at the NCAA level. Coaches also selected one conference champion, with each vote counting as one point. NICK WOOD JOINS TEAM EARLY: Georgia men s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz in November announced the signing of Nick Wood, who joined the team in January, a semester early. The Knoxville, Tenn., product was rated the No. 1 player in the South in each of the 12, 14, and 16 age groups, and No. 2 in the 18s. He is currently the No. 11 player in the nation for his age group and is No. 4 in the signing class according to TennisRecruiting.net. Wood won national opens in the 12s, 14s, and 18s, and has made the ITF finals in Daytona Beach and the quarterfinals of the National Clay Courts in his career. Wood s father, Donie, was a tennis player for the University of Arkansas from 1987-90, and still ranks fourth in Razorbacks history for singles winning percentage in a season with a mark of 0.875 in 1988. His mother is Shari Wood and he has two brothers, Matt and Chase. Manuel Diaz begins his 25th season as head coach of the Georgia men s tennis team in 2012-13. VENABLES NAMED VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT: Georgia men s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz has announced the addition of Tristan Venables to the staff for the 2012-13 season as a volunteer coach.

Venables attended and played tennis at the University of Denver before earning a bachelor of contemporary arts degree from Edith Cowan University in 2009. While at Denver, he played the No. 1 position and was named the team s MVP in 1997-98. From 1999-2012, he served as the head coach at Wembley Downs Tennis Club in Perth, Western Australia, which has an enrollment of over 400 members. He played State League from 1995-2012 and was part of the National League Finals Team held at the Australian Open in 2012. In 2009 he was one of 16 coaches given Tennis Australia High Performance Coach Qualification status. Tristan is a terrific addition, Diaz said. He brings a wealth of experience and fresh new ideas to our staff. He has been very well-received by both our players and coaches, and with the year already underway he is doing a fantastic job. We re already seeing the benefits of Tristan s work with our team. Venables visited UGA while coaching in 2005, where he met his wife, Jessica, a Georgia graduate. GEORGIA TENNIS TO HOST NCAAS IN 2014: The University of Georgia will host the 2014 NCAA Men s & Women s Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced Nov. 1. The Dan Magill Tennis Complex has hosted the men s tournament 24 times and the women s event three times, in addition to three combined tournaments for a total of 30, most recently in both 2010 and 2012. The event has been combined since 2006. The Georgia men s tennis team has won six NCAA titles on the men s side five of which came while playing in Athens. It has done so in tournament format since 1977. The first women s championship was held in 1982. The tournaments have undergone some changes since their inceptions, including moving from a 16-team field to the current 64-team field in 1999. The first two rounds are held at on-campus sites, followed by the Round of 16 and beyond at the designated NCAA Championship site.
