Rio Grande, however, won the last game in the series earlier this season back on Jan. 7 78-73 in overtime in Rio Grande, Ohio. Since then the teams have had smimilar paths to today s meeting with both teams sporting a 5-6 Mid-South Conference record. Today s winner will take over sole place of fifth place in a tight MSC race to get into the top three with Cumberlands and Shawnee State controlling the top-two spots. The RedStorm lost at Cumberlands (Ky.) 67-46 their last time out, while Lindsey Wilson beat West Va. Tech 93-85 here on Thursday night. Lindsey wilson college blue raiders NO. NAME POS. YR. HT. Lindsey Wilson vs. Rio Grande Lindsey Wilson Sports Information (270) 384-8071 Women s Basketball Notes Scouting Rio Grande The RedStorm have played in a lot of tight games, as shown in their average margin, which is currently at just negative 0.8. Lindsey Wilson got a taste of their ability to stay in close games earlier this season in an overtime loss on the road. Rio Grande doesn t defend very well, giving up over 73 points per game and allowing teams to shoot 42.9 percent, both marks higher than its own season averages. Rio Grande did beat St, Catharine (Ky.), however, before its loss at Cumberlands, a Patriot team that took out the Blue Raiders on the road a few weeks ago. RedStorm Student-Athlete to Watch Kaylee Helton is routinely the most important player on the floor for Rio Grande. The senior guard ranks 10th in the NAIA in free-throw shooting at 85.6 percent and is 26th in points per game at 15.9. Helton s biggest output of the season came against West Virginia Tech with 25 points on Dec. 1., while she has hit four three pointers in two games this season. Helton helped knock off the Blue Raiders earlier this season with 20 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 performance from the free-throw line. The First Meeting in Rio Grande, Ohio Shardae Morrison-Fountain s 24 points on 3-for-3 three-point shooting was too much for Lindsey Wilson to overcome, losing 78-73 in overtime against Rio Grande (Ohio) at Newt Oliver Arena. Morrison- Fountain who also hit 7-of-10 free throws wasn t alone as she poured in a career-high as Kaylee Helton hit all eight of her free throws and knocked down a pair of threes to finish with 20 points. Junior Ashley Rainey and freshman Monny Niamke paced Lindsey Wilson with 17 points each, while junior Sarah Gillis matched a career-high with three 3-pointers to finish with a season-high 15 points. The Blue Raiders led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but 23 turnovers with just 12 assists allowed the RedStorm to erase the deficit and take a three point lead with under 10 seconds left in regulation. Rainey Ninth Member of 1,000-Point Club With her 11th point in a 26-point performance in the loss to Cumberlands (Ky.) on Feb. 4, Ashley Rainey became the ninth player in Lindsey Wilson history to reach 1,000 career points. With 1,037 points heading into Thursday s contest against West Virginia Tech, Rainey ranks ninth and will need 66 points to junp Shelia Isenberg to take eighth place. Rio Grande at Cumberlands on Thursday Thursday night s meeting with fifth-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) proved to be a historic night for the Rio Grande women s basketball team - but for all the wrong reasons. The RedStorm managed just eight points in the first half of what ended up as a 67-46 drubbing at the hands of the Patriots at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. The win was the 20th in a row for Cumberlands, which improved to 22-1 overall and 12-0 in the MSC. Mid-South Conference in the Poll The Mid-South Conference has five teams ranked in the NAIA Coaches Top-25 Poll, led by Cumberlands (Ky.) at No. 5. Shawnee State (Ohio) is No. 10, Georgetown (Ky.) is No. 16, Campbellsville (Ky.) is No. 21 and Lindsey Wilson is next in line at No. 24. The conference also has a team receiving votes in the poll in Rio Grande (Ohio) with one vote. The Blue Raiders are 1-6 against those teams this season. beating Georgetown on Jan. 14. Lindsey Wilson Among the Leaders in the NAIA Not many teams are shooting the ball better than the Blue Raiders this season. At 45.0 percent from the field, the Blue Raiders rank fifth in the NAIA, while Jasmine Brimm leads the way at 49.0 percent from the field for the season which ranks 26th. Lindsey Wilson has scored the 13th most points in the nation this season with 1,797. Blue Raiders Positive Trends When looking at Lindsey Wilson s season by the numbers, its easy to see what makes it perform well, here is a sample of those numbers. When leading at halftime, Lindsey Wilson is 12-2, when Lindsey Wilson allows less than 60 points it is a perfect 8-0. If the Blue Raiders shoot better from the field than their opponents, they are 14-2. If the Blue Raiders shoot higher than 35.0 percent from behind the arc they are a perfect 8-0. On the contrary, Lindsey Wilson is 8-5 when being outrebounded and 5-6 when it trails the game at halftime. Wethington Takes Leave of Absence Lindsey Wilson head coach John B. Wethington took a leave of absence from the program prior to Saturday s game against Georgetown. Assistant coach Steve Beck will lead the team until his return.
