Per ANSI standard Z535.6-2011, the defi nitions of the four signal words are as follows: DANGER DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. CAUTION NOTICE indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury. NOTICE is used to address practices not related to physical injury. 2

2.0 SPECIFICATIONS Gin Pole Kit Storage Dimensions Length 79 in 200 cm Width 9 in 229 mm Height 9 in 229 mm Weight (ready to use) 41 lbs 18.5 kg 2.1 GENERAL INFORMATION The AMKUS Gin Pole Kit (GPK1) is designed to be used in combination with the AMKUS Rope Rescue System (ARRS1). It is designed to add a quick-to-deploy, reliable high-point to make it easier for rescuers to deal with the problems associated with deploying and retrieving rescue loads over the edge. The GPK1 is not designed or tested for any other application, and its use in any other application is not recommended or authorized. Prior to use, all users must be familiar with all information in the user manual and be properly trained in the safe use of the ARRS1. 3

3.0 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Always wear protective clothing. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death. It is the responsibility of the user to insure that appropriate protective clothing and equipment are used to provide protection from those hazards to which personnel are exposed or could be exposed while working with this product. 4.0 TRAINING DANGER AMKUS equipment should only be operated by trained personnel that follow all safety precautions. Failure to do so will result in serious injury or death. This product is designed to be used by trained emergency services personnel. Technical rope rescue and rope rescue training are inherently dangerous activities. All agencies and their personnel are responsible for learning safe rope rescue techniques before using this product. All personnel using this equipment are assumed to have completed a course of instruction that is acknowledged as being educationally sound by the local authority having jurisdiction over such training. This document contains basic operating and maintenance instructions only. 5.0 SET-UP PROCEDURE AMKUS equipment is manufactured with superior craftsmanship and quality that is backed by a factory warranty. NOTICE Only use AMKUS tools with AMKUS equipment. Mixing AMKUS tools with another manufacturer s equipment may cause operational problems, equipment failure, or denial of warranty claims. The Gin Pole Kit (GPK1) is delivered with the following components: (1) 6-10 ft. Telescoping Gin Pole (1) Gin Pole Head (1) Gin Pole U Shaped Mounting Bracket (3) Steel D Locking Carabiners (2) Locking Hitch Pins (1) Quick Release Ball Lock Pin (1) 3 Rescue Pulley (1) 20 Section of 5/8 Rope (1) Ascender Normally the GPK1 is shipped from AMKUS partially assembled. The gin pole head will be secured to the 2-part telescoping gin pole by the quick release ball lock pin. The U shaped mounting bracket will be secured with the locking hitch pin to the bottom of the gin pole. 5.1 HITCH EXTENSION Before use, the gin pole U shaped mounting bracket must be installed on the ARRS1 hitch extension. Hitch extensions supplied for every ARRS1 system are pre-drilled to accept the gin pole kit U bracket. To mount the bracket to the hitch extension locate the following supplied items: (2) ½ USS Flat Washers (1) ½ Fender Washer (1) ½ Jam Nut (1) ½ Lock Nut (1) ½ -13 x 3½ Hex Head Cap Screw 4

1. Place the fender washer between the hitch extension and the U shaped mounting bracket, and place the fl at washers on the upside of the mounting bracket and on the bottom side of the hitch extension. 2. Insert the hex head cap screw through the U bracket and hitch extension. Thread the jam nut onto the hex head cap screw until fi nger tight. Thread the lock nut onto the hex head cap screw. 3. Tighten the lock nut until it meets the jam nut, being sure to hold the hex head cap screw in place. 4. Check to insure the U bracket swivels freely without binding. 5

5.2 TIE-BACK ANCHOR(S) The head of the gin pole can be tied back to either one or two tie-back anchors. In either case the tie back anchor(s) must be rated to carry the entire load including safety factors. If a single tie-back anchor is used, it must be rated for 10,000 pounds. If two tie-back anchors are used and the load is equalized between the two points, the rating for each tie-back anchor can be reduced to 5,000 pounds.) CAUTION The use of a two-point tie-back is strongly recommended. The two-point tie-back decreases the load requirement for each tieback anchor from 10,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds. Additionally, the double tie-back system decreases the tendency of the gin pole to swing when not under load. BAD GOOD Prior to installing the tie-back anchor(s) consult the apparatus/vehicle manufacturer to ensure proper design and compliance with load requirements. When installing tie back anchor(s), the anchor(s) should be located in a position that insures that the angle between the gin pole and the gin pole tieback support rigging is between 45 and 60 degrees. Under no circumstances shall the angle between the gin pole and the gin pole tie-back support rigging be less than 45 degrees. An included angle of less than 45 degrees changes the allocation of forces through the rescue system. At less than 45 degrees, increased loads on the system can result in a system failure. System failure may result in serious injury or death. Install the ARRS1 on the vehicle as described in the ARRS1 User Information Manual steps 1-8. Mount ARRS1 only to a receiver with a minimum capacity of 10,000 pounds. To install and utilize the GPK1 follow these additional steps: 1. Attach the tie-back rigging to the gin pole head with one of the D locking carabiners. 2. With the remaining D locking carabiners attach the tie-back rigging to the tie-back anchor(s). 3. Place the rescue pulley on the main line between the Prusik Knots and load and attach the pulley to the gin pole head with a carabiner. 4. Adjust the height of the gin pole as desired by removing the locking hitch pin and sliding the telescoping pole. When the correct height is reached, re-insert the locking hitch pin. 5. Adjust the angle of the gin pole with the ascender attached to the tie-back rigging. 6. Insure that the gin pole is free to swing and align itself with the direction that the load will be lowered and raised. 7. The ARRS1 with Gin Pole is now ready for use. As the length of the gin pole is extended the angle between the pole and tieback rigging decreases. DO NOT allow the angle between the pole and the tie-back rigging to become less than 45 degrees. Before raising or lowering any live load, attach all rescuers and victims to a belay attached to a second, separate anchor. 6

7.0 GENERAL MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE Always store the tool in a clean dry space. After each use: 1. Wipe all parts down with a clean, dry cloth. 2. Check to insure that the lock nut is tight against the jamb nut on the U shaped mounting bracket as described in the set-up procedures. 3. Visually inspect all components of the tie back rigging for wear. 4. Visually inspect all other parts for wear or damage. 5. If excessive wear or damage is noticed, discontinue use. Contact your local dealer or AMKUS, Inc. for repair, service or replacement parts. 7.1 MAINTENANCE RECORDS It is the responsibility of the user to keep maintenance records for each component of the rescue system. Maintenance shall be performed by qualified service technicians in accordance with the recommendations as outlined in this manual. 8.0 PARTS, SERVICE AND TECHNICAL INFORMATION Parts, service and technical information may be obtained from your local AMKUS dealer, or by contacting AMKUS Rescue Systems.
