CUBS: The Braves and Cubs meet for the second time this season in the middle game of this three-game set...the teams will meet three more times this season after this weekend, with the Cubs making their final regular season trip to Turner Field, June 10-12. The Cubs carry a seven-game winning streak against the Braves into today s game after taking the series opener yesterday...atlanta took the opener of the 2015 season series before the Cubs won the last six, including a four-game sweep here at Wrigley Field from August 20-August 23, 2015. Prior to this current seven-game losing streak, the Braves had won seven of eight games over the Cubs, dating to September 22, 2013. UP next: For Atlanta, today s game is the fourth in an eight-game, three-series road trip to Boston (1-1), Chicago Cubs (0-1) and New York Mets (3). GRAND SLAMS: The Braves surrendered their fourth grand slam of the season yesterday when Matt Szczur took Chris Withrow out to left-center field in the eighth. The Braves have allowed four of the 17 grand slams in baseball this season, after being the only team in 2015 to not give one up. ROUGH START: After starting the season 0-9 for the first time since the 1988 campaign (when they opened 0-10), the Braves won four straight games before losing nine of their last 10...The last Braves team to lose 18 games by the 23rd game of the season was the 1914 club, which started 4-18-1. The Braves 18 losses this month set the franchise record for most April losses (since 1900). HOME RUNS: Atlanta s five home runs in the club s first 23 games are the fewest for the club through the first 23 games of a season since the 1931 team had four. RISPY BUSINESS: The Braves went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position yesterday, but still rank second in the NL and fourth in MLB in RISP batting average this season, with a.298 (54-for-181) mark...only BAL (.327), STL (.315), and TEX (.301) are ahead of ATL. 1 & 9: Thursday night, leadoff hitter Nick Markakis (three) and No. 9 hitter Mallex Smith (two) combined to drive in all five of the Braves runs. The last time the Braves starting leadoff hitter and number nine hitter each had multiple RBIs that accounted for all the Braves runs in a game was 9/7/88 at SF...Leadoff man Ron Gant had two and No. 9 Tom Glavine had two in a 4-1 win...research courtesy of STATS, LLC. SCHEDULE: Each team the Braves have played is.500 or better this season...six of the Braves next seven opponents (CHI, NYM, PHI, KC, PIT, PHI) are all over.500 entering play today.
