SPLASH! A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE United States Power Squadrons Port Huron Sail and Power Squadron September, 2017 Since it feels a bit like Fall, it s a great time to plan to attend the Frost Bite Rendezvous in St Cair at Murphy s restaurant on Sat. Sept at 5 PM. If you don t come by boat, just drive to this fun event. Bring a friend and perspective member. Another Fall event worth attending is the Fall D9 Conference in Gaylord, MI on Oct 13-15. I always learn interesting thing and enjoy meeting people from other squadrons at the Conference. If anyone is able to attend the National USPS meeting in Dallas in Sept, please let me know. You can be the official Port Huron SPS representative. Many thanks to SEO Lt/C Richard Haas for his many years as a leader of one of the finest Educational Departments in D9. His classes are why I became a member of PHSPS. Dick is not leaving the Squadron and has agreed to help the next SEO whose term stars in Jan. I am looking for someone to do this job who can work with Dick starting now. A reminder that we still need a person to Chair the Nominating Committee. Please let me know if you can help the Squadron by accepting this position. More members are still needed for PHSPS. Please bring a friend to the PHSPS meetings and events so all of us can help you recruit them to be Squadron members. v Splash! Page 4 Lt/C Richard A. Haas, AP Educational Officer As the boating season starts to wind down we start the fall academic year. We have the basic boating safety class, America s Boating Course, starting 12 October. With only about a month and a half left of the boating season it is time to begin thinking about what you will be doing during the off-season. Some will be playing catchup on home projects while others will be planning next year s boating season and cruises. Maybe you will be thinking of changes you can make to your boat, or your boat s equipment. Upgrades. You will be thinking of what you may need to replace. Flares that will be going out of date, items in your first aid kit that may need to be replaced and other dated items. There is another activity you can do. Increase your boating knowledge. You can do this in a couple of ways: taking one of our classes or by checking out one of our seminars or by taking a course selfstudy. Starting in the winter and spring we will be offering three classes: Jr. Navigation, Seamanship, and Cruise Planning. More information will be put out on these classes as the time draws closer. Over the next couple of months I will put together a list of all the Seminars and course materials we have on hand. I will be more than happy to sign out any of our materials to our members to give you the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills. In addition to that list I will put together a list of all the classes and seminars available USPS. If during the offboating season you would like to take any of the classes as a self-study I ll order the materials, assist you in any way possible, and proctor the exam for you. One final thought. You are more than welcome to sit in on any of the classes we offer. It could give you an opportunity to pick up little tidbits of information to make your boating more enjoyable. The other side is that with the experience you have and can pass along to our students to make their boating more enjoyable and safer. Lt/C Richard A. Haas, AP
Splash! Safety Report Page 5 Maintenance and Storage Tips For Your PDF s From BoatSafe.com If you want your PFD to take good care of you -- take good care of your PFD. Follow these tips and your PFD will last for many years. Don't alter your PFD to make it fit. Buy another that does fit. Don't put heavy objects on it or use it for a knee pad or fender, it can lose buoyancy when crushed. Don't leave your PFD on board for long periods when the boat is not in use, the heat can degrade its flotation. Don't dry your PFD in a dryer, on a radiator, heater, or any other direct heat source. This can degrade and damage the buoyancy material. Don't let your PFD lie out in the sun when the boat is not in use. Sunlight weakens some synthetic fabrics very rapidly. Don't leave your PFD onboard for long periods of time when the boat is not in use, the heat can degrade its flotation. Don't dry your PFD in a dryer, on a radiator, heater or any other direct heat source. This can degrade and damage the buoyancy material. Do let your PFD drip dry thoroughly before putting it away. If your PFD has been in salt water, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water. Do stow your PFD in a well ventilated place. Do check your PFD for rips, tears, and holes and make sure seams, straps and hardware are okay. Do make sure there is no sign of water-logging, mildew odor, or shrinkage of the buoyant materials. Do check and replace spent cartridges in inflatable PFDs. Do put your name on your PFD if you are the only wearer. It will keep you from mistakenly putting on one that is not sized for you. Do test all your PFDs at the start of every boating season. Do discard old PFDs by cutting them up and properly disposing of them. You don't want someone finding one you discarded and using it. Do give your PFDs all the above checks, plus check their buoyancy in the water, at least twice a year. PFDs can save your life -- Don't leave shore without one. P/C Mark S. Krainbrink, AP
