Over this past weekend, SMU defeated Arkansas State and Akron to win the Hoops for the Cure Tournament. Guard Samantha Mahnesmith, who earn tournament MVP honors, had an incredible game against Arkansas State by tying for a careerhigh 19 points and hitting a game-tying 3 pointer in the waning seconds of the first overtime. MUSTANGS WIN HOOPS FOR THE CURE SMU 86, Arkansas State 80 (2OT): Behind 19 points and a last-second overtime threepointer from guard Samantha Mahnesmith, the SMU women s basketball team defeated Arkansas State 86-80 in double-overtime at Moody Coliseum on Friday night. The play of the night came in the last few seconds of the first overtime when Mahnesmith banked-in a shot from several feet behind the threepoint line to the tie the game and force a second overtime. Mahnesmith s 19 points ties a career high and her five made three-pointers sets a new career high. The junior led all scorers with eight points in the overtimes as the Mustangs edged Arkansas State, 13-7 in the final period. SMU 75, Akron 67: Five players scored in double figures as the SMU women s basketball (3-2) defeated Akron, 75-67, in the Hoops for the Cure Championship on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. Alisha Filmore led the scoring charge with a career-high 18 points, including a 4-of-6 performance from three-point range. The sophomore point guard added in a four assists and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Due to her strong play, Filmore was named to the all-tournament team. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Mustangs, Haley Day and Samantha Mahnesmith each added in 10 points. Mahnesmith, who was named the Hoops for the Cure MVP, sunk a three to extend the SMU lead to four after Akron (4-2) made a late run to bring the score within one point. After the junior s three-pointer brought the score to 71-67, the Mustangs closed the contest with four more points to seal the game and tournament championship. The Golden Lions return two starters and six letterwinners from a team that went 8-22 last season. Head coach Cary Shelton is in his second season at the helm for APB. Arkansas Pine Bluff is led by Jasmine Abrams and Laquisha Slaton, who average 13.3 and 11.8 points per game respectively. Abrams also leads the team with 6.3 boards per game. MILESTONES Senior forward Delisha Wills needs 1 point to reach 16th place on SMU s all-time career scoring list. Wills would supplant Sarah Davis, who scored 1,042 points from 2002-2006. The Mustangs (1-2) turned in their best shooting performance of the season, sinking 24 of 45 attempts (53.3%). Christian, who came off the bench, led the Mustangs going 9 for 15 from the field. The senior guard hit a career-high five three-pointers on only six attempts. SMU ON TEXAS CHANNEL SMU, CBS College Sports Network and Time Warner Cable have reached an agreement to televise 17 SMU basketball games on The Texas Channel in the Dallas/Fort Worth market as well as Corpus Christi, Waco, Austin, Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio markets. Time Warner Sports will carry seven women s games featuring feature SMU against North Texas, UTEP, Marshall, Tulsa, UAB, and Rice. DELISHA GETS 1,000 Senior forward Delisha Wills scored her 1,000th career point on a free throw during the second half. Wills, who scored a team-high 13 points in the game, becomes the 18th player in SMU history to reach the 1,000 point mark. CHRISTIAN STEPS UP With the loss of guards Brittany Gilliam and Jillian Samuels (both 1,000 career point scorers for the Mustangs), coach Rhonda Rompola has found a replacement in Raquel Christian. Lauded for her scoring and play making ability Christian averaged 7.1 ppg in her first season on the Hilltop after transferring from Texas Tech. RHONDA GETS 350 With a 69-61 win over UCF on Feb. 25, Mustang head coach Rhonda Rompola won her 350th career game and her 50th conference game since SMU joined the league five years ago, the most wins of the five newest members DELISHA WILLS RETURNS Forward Delisha Wills returns to the Mustangs after missing last season due to injury. A team leader, she was named All-Conference USA second team as a junior and third team as a sophomore. BASKETBALL TEXAS STYLE The SMU women s basketball team will feature 12 of 13 players from the state of Texas in 2010-11. Of the players from the Lone Star State, 11 of the 12 list their hometown as being less than 50 miles of the SMU campus. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK 20-WIN SEASONS The 2009-10 season marked just the second time in SMU s history that it has put together three consecutive 20-win seasons. The first time occured in three straight seasons from 1998-2000. The Mustangs followed up a 24-win campaign in 2007-08 with a 20-12 mark in 2008-09 and a 20-11 record last season. The 64 wins combined over the last three seasons is a school record, surpassing the previous best of 63 from 1997-98 to 1999-2000. THREE STRAIGHT POST-SEASONS SMU reached the WNIT in 2010, marking the third consecutive season that the Mustangs reached the post season. Only two times in program history, both of which were under Rompola, have the Mustangs participated in a post season tournament in three consecutive seasons. 1,000 POINT CLUB SMU guards Brittany Gilliam and Jillian Samuels finished the 2009-10 campaign with over 1,000 points. Both SMU guards became the 16th and 17th players to accumulate over 1,000 points during their careers on the Hilltop. Gilliams and Samuels graduated with the 6th and 13th highest career point totals, respectively. Delisha Wills joined the exclusive club in the first game of the season scoring her 1,000th point on a free throw in the second half. SMU WELCOMES BACK DAY AND ELLIOTT The Mustangs welcome back the team s two top rebounders from last season s 20-11 squad in Haley Day and Christine Elliott. Day, a wing, finished last season fourth on the team with 9.6 points per game and third with 6.5 rebounds per game. Parker was honored for her superb career at Stephen F. Austin, which included two trips to the NCAA Tournament s Sweet 16. Hughes was recognized for his two playing seasons and two coaching stints at Trinity Valley Community College. C-USA TELEVISED GAMES ANNOUNCED The SMU women s basketball team will be featured in three television broadcasts for the upcoming 2010-11 season, The first televised matchup for head coach Rhonda Rompola and the Mustangs will be at Tulane at 7 p.m. (CT) Jan. 6 on CBS College Sports. On Jan. 16, ESPN2 will broadcast SMU s home matchup against UCF. The game time, originally slated for 2 p.m., will be moved up an hour to a 1 p.m. CT start. The SMU at Rice game on Feb. 6 scheduled for 2 p.m. will be televised on tape delay via CBS College Sports and CSS at 4 p.m. CT. SMU FALLS IN DOUBLE-OT TO RANKED TCU The SMU women s basketball lost in double overtime to No. 23/25 TCU, 87-73, on Wednesday evening at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. In the first eight minutes, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 19-13 lead, but TCU climbed back to post a 33-30 margin at the half. In a back-and-forth second half, SMU trailed 62-58 with under a minute remaining. In consecutive possessions, Haley Day and Christian each hit shots to bring the Mustangs back to tie the contest. After a missed shot by TCU s Helen Sverrisdottir, Alisha Filmore grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court. After crossing the half-court line, Filmore drew contact from the Horned Frog defense, but a controversial no-call turned the ball over to TCU. In the second overtime, SMU was left without three starters, Filmore (injury), Delisha Wills (fouls) and Haley Day (fouls), and TCU went on a 9-2 run to begin the period. Six Emily Carter free throws helped lift the Frogs to the win. MUSTANGS FALL IN THRILLER TO UTAH The SMU women s basketball team lost in a thriller, 44-43, to Utah in the season opener on Friday night at Moody Coliseum.
