The 2007 Aggies look to build on one of the most successful seasons in school history after finishing No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, a year ago. After its third trip to the NCAA Tournament and first appearance in the WAC Championship Match, NMSU returns three all-conference selections. The Aggies garnered their first at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. I m excited about the level of athlete that we have in our program, head coach Mike Jordan said. We have a tremendous group of returners and anytime you can return two all-american middles you have to feel good about that. I think our young players are gifted and just need a little bit of experience. There is no question we have top 25 caliber athletic ability. The Aggies finished 2006 with a 33-4 record, that marked the most wins in school history. In only its second year in the WAC, NMSU was second in the league with a 14-2 stand, which included snapping Hawai i s 114-conference match win streak, Oct. 13. Middle Hitter Senior Kim Oguh and junior Amber Simpson lead the Aggies into 2007 after they became the first pair to earn AVCA All-America honors (honorable mention) in the same year. Oguh is a two-time all-american and both players earned first team All-WAC honors last season. The duo was a force for the Aggies offensively with Simpson setting the singleseason hitting percentage record (.387) while Oguh was third (.377) and finished first and second in the conference, respectively. Redshirt freshman Angel Tirado and freshman Sarah Johnson-Kennedy add depth for the Aggies. Outside Hitter It s going to be a battle on the outside for playing time, Jordan said. They re a group of young outside hitters that really have a lot of ability. The group has the task of replacing departed outside hitters Alice Borden and Tanya Allen, who both were threeyear starters for the Aggies. The left side is young with sophomore Krista Altermatt as the lone returnee while freshmen Whitney Phillips and Alex Steinmetz could vie for a starting spot. Junior Lindsey Yon, SEASONPREVIEW who transferred from Texas A&M, and redshirt freshman Whitney Woods also are strong contenders. Krista Altermatt is probably the best of the group right now, he said. Whitney Phillips and Alex Steinmetz bring a lot to the table. Lindsey Yon, if she is healthy, she really gives a big lift at that position. On the right side, senior Anna Callis returns and sophomore Kelli Goodan should provide a spark off the bench especially if the Aggies play more 6-2. We re excited about both of them, Jordan said. Kelli is versatile enough to play left as well. Setter The setter position was another vacancy for the Aggies after all-conference selection Jackie Choi graduated. Jordan said he is confident with the new collection of setters that includes a transfer from Iowa State junior Alyssa Gintant and freshman Bryn Rodgers. Alyssa had a great spring, he said. I think she is going to be one of the very best setters, if not the best setter in the conference. Bryn is gifted athletically. She can play. We could find ourselves playing a little more 6-2 this year. Defensive Specialist The defensive specialists are one of the most experienced positions for the team. With a pair of seniors, Briana Akrie and Jordan Bostic, and junior Krystal Torres, the group should dominate the back row. Freshmen Stephanie Lopez and Kristi Salazar give the Aggies a great deal of depth at the position. I think our ball control will be as good if not better than anyone in the league, he said. It s good competition for that libero job and they will all see court time. Schedule The Aggies 2007 schedule is solid with three road tournaments and match-ups with six NCAA Tournament participants including a tournament at 2006 National Champion Nebraska. NMSU is also hosting the 2007 WAC Tournament, Nov. 15-17. The Aggies are slated to meet top 25 teams such as Texas and Utah in non-conference action while NMSU begins its third year in the WAC. I like our schedule it s tough. We re playing some great teams early that we hope will prepare us for the WAC and NCAA Tournament play.
