Tennis News Next Stop: Sectionals! by Shari Gonzalez After wrapping up a 16-0 regular season schedule Jane Ladrech and Michelle McDonagh s Women s 4.0 team headed to the District Championships held this past August at Napa Valley High School over the weekend of August 13-15th. At the end of the regular season the team defeated Orindawoods in the first round of playoffs with a definitive 4-1 win and had a closer match in the 2nd round of playoffs beating Moraga Country Club 3-2 to clinch the Districts spot for Diablo North. Over the first 2 days at the District championships the Walnut Creek team dominated the competition winning 5-0 over teams from Decathalon (Santa Clara) and La Cantera (Santa Rosa) and only dropping a single set in the process. By the final Sunday the deciding match was set between the Walnut Creek team and the Piper Park team from Larkspur who had also dominated the competition in the first 2 days and headed into Sunday with a 9-1 record for the weekend. The WC #1 doubles team of Darcy Beauchemin and Linda Stern and the #2 singles line Heidi Belton were the first 2 matches off the court to give Walnut Creek a quick 2-0 lead. Walnut Creek s #1 singles Kathy Larragueta was next off after dropping a tough match against the #1 self rated Piper Park player to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Walnut Creek. In the #2 doubles spot Jane Ladrech and Michelle McDonagh battled in a back and forth match but just came up short placing the overall team score at 2-2. The final doubles match of the day and the final match on the court came down to Christine Chin-Miurra and Shari Gonzalez in the #3 doubles line. After splitting sets Chin-Miurra and Gonzalez closed it out 10-4 in a 3rd set tiebreaker to give Walnut Creek a final 3-2 score over Piper Park. The team is now headed to Sectionals in Carmel over the weekend of August 27-29th and will take on the Golden Gate (San Francisco), Park Terrace (Sacramento) and Clubsport Pleasanton teams in a 3-day round robin - the winner to travel to Tucson in October to compete in the National Championships. So far it s been a dream season and the success of the team can be attributed to great captaining and great camaraderie between all players. The team is super excited to travel to Carmel and hoping to bring home the gold for Walnut Creek! Missed it by that much by Nick Scriabine We had a great run and came within 1 super tiebreak from going to Sectionals. Even though we lost 3-2 the first 2 days, if we had turned around one of our matches against Courtside Friday morning, we would have gone on based on sets lost. We lost 7 matches over the week-end, 5 in Super tiebreaks. We were good enough to play at Sectionals, but not tough enough at the tiebreaks. They are tough to get proficient at since hardly anybody opts to play them during the regular season. Next season we will be playing them a lot in practice. The Folsom weekend was a lot of fun for our team. We played some good tennis, had a competitive golf outing, and ate and drank well at our team dinner at Henry's Steakhouse in the Redhawk Casino. We hope for a return trip next year. Nick Scriabine, Men's WC 4.0B Captain 4.0 Women heading to Sectionals: (l-r): Shari Gonzalez, Darcy Beauchemin, Christine Chin-Miura, Kathy Larragueta, Lisa Hotchkiss, Beverly Maechling, Co-Captain: Michelle, McDonagh, Captain: Jane Ladrech, Nancy DeSchane, Heidi Belton, Athena Lofquist, Linda Stern The Court Reporter September 2010 5
