4 Places that the US Once Planned to Invade Throughout history, the United States have fought in many wars and engaged in many military campaigns. There are many places that they once planned on invading, but the operation was never put in place. Here are some unusual places that were targeted. 1. New Zealand In 1908, the US Navy sent a fleet of 16 warships to New Zealand. The people on the island, the Kiwis, welcomed the ships because it countered the Japanese naval influence in the region. If war began, the New Zealanders thought the US will restore order. However, the US ships were actually on a recon mission. Because of the fact that the US and Japan diplomatic relations were strained, the US prepared for the possibility of war. President Teddy Roosevelt feared that if war erupted, the British would honor a treaty between Britain and Japan and side with the Emperor. And if Britain went to war, so did Australia and New Zealand. So actually, the US was here to plan an invasion. 2. Mexico In the years before World War II, the US, when making strategies, used certain colors to represent other countries. Britain was red, China orange, Mexico red, and each time, the US was blue. But as war grew more complex, the US developed something new: the Rainbow plans. Before that era however, War Plan Green was a plan designed to invade Mexico and replace the corrupt, anti-us government in place at the time, with a US friendly one. 3. Portugal During World War II, the US became concerned over the Azores island chain, which belong to Portugal, a Hitler friendly fascist country. Although they stayed out of the war, if Hitler took control of the country, the Azores would pose a threat to overseas supply lines and provide a naval and air base for Germany to strike at Britain, and, eventually, the US. As a result, the US formulated plans to seize the Azores from Portugal. It almost happened too: The US trained soldiers and Marines for the mission. 4. Canada War Plan Red was planned in 1927. It was a plan for the US to invade parts of the British Empire. Why? Because of the treaty between Britain and Japan. This also led to the New Zealand plans. If war broke out with Japan and Britain joined in, the plan called for the US to defend the East coast, while simultaneously going for Canada. The plan was to destroy airfields and bases in surprise attack, then roll in. In the meantime, the US would starve out the British by means of a blockade. 3
