Orioles first round selection Manny Machado blasted the eventual game-winning triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to score both runs. Brenden Webb drew a lead off walk and Mychal Givens singled him to third before the Machado hit. The Shorebirds bullpen tossed five scoreless innings and held the Grasshoppers to just hit in the final five innings. MACHADO TOP SHORTSTOP PROSPECT: In the most recent edition of Baseball America, Shorebirds shortstop Manny Machado was tabbed as the top overall shortstop prospect in professional baseball. BULLPEN DELIVERS: Chris Petrini, Clay Schrader and David Walters combined to shutdown the Grasshoppers from the fifth inning forward on Thursday night. Petrini threw three scoreless innings in middle relief, Schrader threw the eighth inning and David Walters picked up his tenth career minor league save. DOUBLE PLAY #1: The dynamic double play combo of Machado and Givens turned their first double play of the 2011 season in game one. Greensboro had the lead off man aboard when Pedro Mendoza grounded to Givens who started the 4-6-3 double play. CAMERON ROTH GETS NOD (More on Page 10): Cameron Roth will make a spot start in game two of the doubleheader tonight. Roth is not unfamiliar with the starting role as he made 12 starts last season for the Bluefield Orioles. In 55.1 innings pitched, he struck out 47 batters and walked 21. Roth celebrated his 22nd birthday on April 5. He played his college baseball at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The Poquoson, Virginia native was selected in the 29th round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft. PLAYER TO WATCH WHO S HOT/WHO S NOT KIERON POPE Kieron Pope, who went 0-for-3 last night, has played in 301 minor league games over his five plus season career. He has 28 career home runs and 152 career RBIs. Pope hit.232 with 12 home runs for the Shorebirds in 2008 and.250 with six home runs for Delmarva in 2010. Pope was selected in the 5th round of the 2005 draft by the Orioles. WHO S HOT MYCHAL GIVENS Mychal Givens, the Orioles second round pick in 2009, finished the 2010 campaign on an 8-game hitting streak with the Ironbirds. He went 12-of-33 (.364) with three homers and five RBIs during the stretch. WHO S NOT TRENT MUMMEY In 13 games towards the tail end of the season with Delmarva, Mummey went hitless in seven of them. He finished with nine hits in 54 at-bats (.167). Last night, he went 0-for-4 to open the 2011 season.

He also played in the Seattle, Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins organizations from 2002-04. He spent the 2005 season with the independent Lancaster Barnstormers before ending his playing career. Jason Fransz owns the career Shorebirds record with 28 home runs between the 2004 season (6) and the 2005 season (22). DOWN YEAR AT HOME LAST YEAR: The Shorebirds had their fair share of troubles at Perdue Stadium last year. They went 30-41 at home. Prior to that, the Shorebirds had posted a winning record at home in six straight seasons. The Shorebirds are normally much better at home than on the road. In fact, over the last six years, the Shorebirds have 41 more win at home than on the road. Year Home Record Road Record 2010 30-41 28-41 2009 38-29 28-41 2008 41-29 37-32 2007 36-31 32-37 2006 36-33 28-40 2005 42-28 30-39 2004 36-30 33-39 ALL-STAR RETURNS: 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star Brian Conley is back for his third stint with the Shorebirds. Conley lead the Shorebirds in batting average last season at.270. He also led the Shorebirds with 70 walks and a.401 on-base percentage. The Gaithersburg, Md. native earned a late promotion to Frederick. In 16 games, he hit.222 (10-45) with a home run and four RBIs. SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE LOADED: The South Atlantic League is currently home to the top three picks in the 2010 First Year Player Draft; Bryce Harper (Hagerstown), Jameson Taillon (West Virginia and Manny Machado (Delmarva). The eighth overall pick in the draft, Delino Deshields, Jr. is also in the league with the Lexington Legends. FIRST MULTIPLE YEAR SKIP SINCE... Gary Kendall 2005-2007 is the last manager to lead the Shorebirds for consecutive seasons. Ryan Minor enters his second season as the leader of the Shorebirds. After Kendall left for Aberdeen, Ramon Sambo managed in 2008. Orlando Gomez was the manager in 2009 and Ryan Minor took over in 2010. Kendall and Joe Ferguson (2000-2002) are the only skippers in history to manage for three consecutive seasons. SHOREBIRDS SCHEDULE TIDBITS The 2011 Shorebirds schedule features 70 home games and 70 road games. Besides those obvious figures, here are some other tidbits. Eight of their first 12 games will be against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Shorebirds play the Grasshoppers 16 times in the first half and only five times in the second half of the year. The Shorebirds travel to Augusta this season for the first time since August of 2007. The Shorebirds go to Augusta, Georgia during the first road swing of the season. The Shorebirds will play only 11 home games in the month of June (15 road games). The two teams that the Shorebirds do not play this season are the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) and Lexington Legends (Astros). BEATO MAKES MLB DEBUT: Former Shorebirds pitcher Pedro Beato made his major league debut for the New York Mets this season. Beato went 7-8 with 4.05 ERA for the Shorebirds in 2007. He was selected by the Mets, the team that first drafted in him in 2005, in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft. Beato has pitched in one game this season for the Mets. He tossed two scoreless innings. COLLEGES REPRESENTED THIS YEAR: The Shorebirds roster features a lot of players with college experience; Tim Adleman (Georgetown), Scott Copeland (University of Southern Mississippi), Jason Gurka (Angelina JC), Brandon Holloway (Bluefield College), Jarret Martin (Bakersfield JC), Ryan Palsha (Diablo Valley JC, Chris Petrini (University of California-Berkeley), Cameron Roth (UNC Wilmington), Clay Schrader (San Jacinto JC), Aaron Swenson (Youngstown State), David Walters (Francis Marion), Justin Dalles (South Carolina), Kyle Moore (Alabama), Mike Flacco (CCBC- Catonsville), Adam Gaylord (Stanford), Ty Kelly (University of California-Davis), Brian Conley (Towson), Trent Mummey (Auburn), Kipp Schutz (Indiana) and Brenden Webb (Palomar JC).
