THOROUGHBRED RACING AUTHORITY S.A. LIMITED STIPENDIARY STEWARDS' REPORT Report on Race Meeting held at the Penola Racecourse by the Penola Racing Club on Thursday, 9 June 2011 Stewards: D. Verberne (A/Chairman), A. Hayles (HT) & C. Deakin (F) (Stewards) R. Spillman & J. Foster & (Deputy Stewards) Dr. J. Callaghan (Veterinary Surgeon) TRACK: Slow 6 (Downgraded to Slow 7 @ 11.58 am retrospective to Race 1) WEATHER: Overcast / Showers RAIL: True RACE 1 : THE BORDER WATCH / SABOIS DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE 1700 metres On arrival at the barriers PINPONGPETA, which had blood in its mouth, was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start. ALSALLY (D. Robinson) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out onto PINPONGPETA (K. Walters), taking that mare out onto FRANTASMIC (C. Lindop), which resulted in those two horses brushing. ALVIE S STORY (J. Lyon) shifted out shortly after the start inconveniencing BORINGER BOY (A. Patterson). Rounding the home turn HIGHLY EXPLOSIVE (N. Beriman) shifted out and brushed with FRANTASMIC (C. Lindop). When being unsaddled, FRANTASMIC got its left hind leg over a partition and became cast for a short period. FRANTASMIC was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly had received some minor abrasions. First Aid was administered. J. Frew, the rider of COMMINSKY, was questioned in regard to the gelding s seemingly disappointing performance today. J. Frew could offer no explanation except that COMMINSKY was under pressure from the 800 metres and he was disappointed in the way the gelding had finished the race off. COMMINSKY was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. BORINGER BOY, which failed to maintain its position with the body of the field throughout and finished a distanced last, was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Mr. A. Clark, the Trainer of BORINGER BOY, was advised a warning had been placed on the gelding and should it perform in a similar manner in future, action may be taken against it. RACE 2 : PENOLA LIFE MEMBERS / SABOIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 metres The start of this race was delayed approximately one minute owing to NEEDANOTHERONE proving difficult to load. Ms. S. Murphy, the Trainer of NEEDANOTHERONE, was advised a warning had been placed on the gelding and should it prove difficult to load in future, action may be taken against it. LA GAZELLE (D. Tourneur) and BOJANI (A. Patterson) were both slow into stride. On jumping away HASTA LA SHAMER (P. Marks) shifted in and away from NEEDANOTHERONE (S. Cahill), which shifted in slightly. RACE 2 : PENOLA LIFE MEMBERS / SABOIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 metres (Cont d) BARDZO (H. McKechnie) raced three wide without cover throughout the race. RACE 3 : FINNS FINE FOODS / SABOIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres Mr. P. Preusker, the Trainer of AL SHAHN, failed to produce the Thoroughbred Identification Card for this gelding as required under ARR.59A. As Stewards were able to confirm the identity of the gelding via its microchip and by computer records held by them, AL SHAHN was permitted to start. Mr. Preusker was fined $50. The start of this race was delayed approximately one minute owing to CAITLONAYA proving difficult to load. Mr. B. Carraill, the Trainer of CAITLONAYA, was advised a warning had been placed on the mare and should it prove difficult to load in future, action may be taken against it. On jumping away CAITLONAYA (D. Tourneur) stood flat-footed and was slow into stride. Mr. B. Carraill, the Trainer of CAITLONAYA, was advised a warning had been placed on the mare and should it not jump on terms with the field in a future event, action may be taken against it. SPEEDY COOP (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly. On jumping away, SCRUBLANDS (J. Potter) was slow into stride. On jumping away BREDLIGN (NZ) (P. Marks) shifted out onto AL SHAHN (N. Beriman), which was inconvenienced when taken onto the heels of PAVLOS (S. Harrison). Racing to the 1100 metres LUCKY BUSTER (J. Frew) had to be steadied when improving onto the heels of PAVLOS (S. Harrison). Racing to the 1100 metres BERNIE S BOY (H. McKechnie) shifted in onto LITTLE BIT OF JOY (A. Patterson), which was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of that gelding. H. McKechnie was severely reprimanded and advised in future to give riders to her inside the room to which they are entitled. Racing to the 500 metres SPEEDY COOP (C. Lindop) rolled in marginally when under pressure and momentarily inconvenienced BREDLIGN (NZ) (P. Marks). Rounding the home turn BANYAN (J. Lyon) rolled out and brushed with LITTLE BIT OF JOY (A. Patterson). BERNIE S BOY (H. McKechnie) had a tendency to hang in over the concluding stages of the event. D. Tourneur, the rider of CAITLONAYA, was questioned regarding his use of the whip prior to the 100 metres. D. Tourneur pleaded guilty to a charge under ARR.137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip in a forehand manner in excess of five occasions prior to the 100 metres and was reprimanded. Mr. A. Clark, the Trainer of BANYAN, was questioned regarding the improved performance of the mare. Mr. Clark stated that BANYAN had been working well in track work and felt in his opinion today s event did not have a lot of depth. He added that he had freshened the mare up since its last start at Strathalbyn. J. Lyon, the rider of BANYAN, explained that BANYAN had travelled well outside the leader until the 300 metres where the mare had dropped the bit. He added that BANYAN switched off at that point until LITTLE BIT OF JOY (A. Patterson) challenged him rounding the home turn and as a result the mare picked up the bit once again and finished the race off well. RACE 4 : PENOLA HARDWARE RATING 0-76 HANDICAP - 1300 metres On arrival on course EVENMOREACTION, which had struck its head in the float en route to the course, was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported multiple lacerations to the head and ruled the gelding unfit to race. First Aid was administered. Acting on this advice, Stewards withdrew EVENMOREACTION at 12.45 pm. On jumping away FIRE EXIT (D. Robinson) was slow into stride. RACE 5 : FESTIVAL HIRE CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1100 metres DOUBT SHE S SINGLE (N. Beriman) jumped away awkwardly and was then forced to steady away from the heels of MY JESSY (C. Puls), which shifted out. On jumping away WORROLONG LAD (C. Lindop) shifted in onto STRUM (J. Lyon) contacting and turning that gelding s hindquarters outwards. Racing to the 100 metres ICONSEEFRAARAWAY (P. Marks) shifted out under riding, taking LORD CHARLES (M. Neilson) out onto WORROLONG LAD (C. Lindop), resulting in these two horses bumping on several occasions. Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow M. Neilson, the rider of the third placegetter LORD CHARLES, to view the Official footage over the concluding stages. ICONSEEFRAARAWAY was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was sore behind. First Aid was administered. Ms. S. Murphy, the Trainer of ICONSEEFRAARAWAY, was advised a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness would be required prior to presenting for a future trial or race. STRUM was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported a small superficial puncture above the left hock and an abrasion over the stifle. First Aid was administered. LORD CHARLES was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding had suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack. Mrs. B. O Loughlin, the Trainer of LORD CHARLES, was advised the gelding was suspended for a period of three months in accordance with ARR.53A. RACE 6 : COOPERS BREWERY RATING 0-65 HANDICAP (Division 1) 1400 metres Racing to the 1200 metres BELLA S DELIGHT (S. Harrison) shifted in onto NAPASH (K. Walters), which was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of that mare. S. Harrison was severely reprimanded and advised in future to give riders to his inside the room to which they are entitled. M. Neilson, the rider of DELCANOS, explained in his opinion the filly did not handle the track conditions today. He added that he would have preferred to be in a more forward position, however, the filly was off the bit from the 1200 metres despite his efforts. Ms. B. O Loughlin, the Trainer of DELCANOS, was of the view that the underfoot conditions may have affected the filly s performance. Ms. O Loughlin added that she will monitor DELCANOS on return to her stable in the next few days with a view to spelling the filly and will notify Stewards if she finds anything untoward with the horse. DELCANOS was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Mr. S. Fisher, the Trainer of NAPASH, was questioned in regard to the gelding s improved performance. Mr. Fisher stated that he felt that NAPASH was fitter for the first up run at Horsham and felt the gelding was dropping in class today. He further stated that in his opinion NAPASH had settled better than in previous runs and had finished the race off well. RACE 7 : HEYWARD S ROYAL OAK HOTEL RATING 0-65 HANDICAP (Division 2) 1400 metres Ms. L. Mattschoss, the Trainer of JESTER JEUNE, failed to produce the Thoroughbred Identification Card as required under ARR.59A. As Stewards were able to confirm the identity of the mare via its microchip and by computer records held by them, JESTER JEUNE was permitted to start. Ms. Mattschoss was fined $50. Racing to the 1100 metres ACTION AGAIN (D. Tourneur) shifted in onto HENRY S QUEST (C. Puls) taking that gelding in onto KOBAN (C. Lindop), which was forced to steady for a number of strides. D. Tourneur was reprimanded and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground in future. SATRUCE (H. McKechnie) was inclined to hang out in the straight and inside the 50 metres was obliged to steady off the heels of TOPS N TAILS (J. Lyon) as that gelding rolled in marginally. D. Tourneur, the rider of ACTION AGAIN, explained he was instructed to race forward and after jumping well and finding the front he was unable to gain cover as he had hoped. He added that he was unable to improve wider on the track to the better going rounding the home turn and entering the straight due to the formation of the field. He further added that in his opinion ACTION AGAIN had finished the race off only fairly and felt that the gelding was not suited to the track conditions, particularly in the straight. ACTION AGAIN was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. RACE 8 : KATNOOK ESTATE WINERY RATING 0-68 HANDICAP - 1700 metres ZENAL, which was kicked by another runner behind the barriers, was examined by the Club s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start. MANAROLA MAGIC (M. Neilson) and CARTHY ROAD (S. Westover) were both slow into stride. WAIT FORETTE (D. Tourneur) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event. FOODEATER (S. Cahill) was held up from the vicinity of the 400 metres to the 200 metres when racing on the heels of WAIT FORETTE (D. Tourneur) and NIKOLAEV (S. Harrison). From the 200 metres until the 100 metres FOODEATER (S. Cahill) and FLAMING MOE (H. McKechnie) came together and bumped on a number of occasions.
