Tennis News SUPER SENIOR 50 LEAGUE As some of you are already aware, the traditional Senior 50 season has been moved so as to fit into the USTA S 2012 calendar. The new Senior 50 season will now run from January through March of 2012. So as a result of this change, there will be no USTA Senior 50 league this fall. HOWEVER So you won t all go into Senior tennis withdrawal, the USTA is planning something a little different. Starting this September there will be a SENIOR SOCIAL TRI-LEVEL LEAGUE This is how it works: These new Senior Social teams will be composed of players with ratings from 4.5 down to 3.0. The matches will consist of three doubles lines and each line has a different ceiling: 4.5, 4.0 and 3.5. The ideal line-up is: #1: two 4.5s #2: two 4.0s #3: two 3.5s However, we all know the ideal situation is not always possible, so in this league anyone can play up. Your line-up for one match might be: #1: 4.5 + 4.0 or 4.0 + 4.0 #2: 3.5 + 3.5 or 3.5 + 3.0 #3: 3.5 + 3.0 or 3.5 + 3.5 In its simplest terms, each line has an upper limit, but no lower limit. So it offers a lot of different possibilities, as well as, lots of opportunities for players from 3.0 to 4.5 to play on the same team. There are a few other things to know about this league: 8-10 matches per team (depending on how many teams register in your area) Results are not used for computer ratings No Post Season, except for this one little carrot: BNP Paribas Open Tri-Level Invitational: One team will be chosen at random to represent NorCal at the BNP Tri-Level Invitational in March 2012, in Indian Wells. USTA Nor- Cal will provide a stipend toward the registration fee. (Only computer rated players are eligible for the invitational in Indian Wells). Team Registration: July 25- September 1, 2011 League Play Begins: October 1, 2011 Season Ends: November 2011 For more information, see the flyer on page 4 or go to the USTA NorCal Internet site. Bank of the West Tournament The Women s Tennis Tournament is coming to Stanford (July 25th - 31st). Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Samantha Stosur have all committed to play. Lifetime Tennis will be selling tickets (at face value) thru the tennis shop for the entire week s feature matches; beginning Monday, June 13th. There will be no surcharge or other fees. Lighting Issue As a result of the recent lighting issues, Lifetime Tennis is going to provide each pass holder an additional TWO weeks on the end of their term. Court Resurfacing and New Windscreens The City has approved the purchase of new windscreens for courts 4,5,6,7. Installation will coincide with the resurfacing project later this summer. The City Council has approved the 10 court resurfacing project for the Walnut Creek Tennis Center. A contractor has been selected and a pre-construction meeting will take place in mid July. The proposed start date is August 1st. More details will be included in the August newsletter. The Court Reporter July 2011 5
