STORE CATTLE Auctioneer Patrick Dennis A light entry of store cattle just before Christmas but what was on offer was mainly good forward finishing cattle. Trade remains firm with good demand for this type of store. A nice entry of around 18mo Blonde d Aquitaine cattle from Mr. L.J. 13 Dairy Cattle An entry of 11 fine in-calf dairy heifers of varying breeds on behalf of J.O. Nightingale Ltd of Whitecross, Wadebridge sold extremely well for the time of year with a top price of 1,120 for a Holstein Friesian x Danish Red. A Montbeliarde x Danish Red x Holstein sold to 1,040. Two Holstein Friesian x Red realised 980 each with all heifers in-calf to an Aberdeen Angus. The overall average for all in-calf heifers was almost 900. A nice run of mainly Aberdeen Angus x young stores for Jennifer Bennetto sold to a top price of 970 Auctioneer Patrick Dennis REARING CALVES A good entry of calves met a decent trade for both bulls and heifers, with both continental and native types selling well. British Blue bull calves at 5 weeks old topped at 335 for F.C. Buse & Co. of St. Minver and 310 for Messrs. J.S. Rodda & Son of Gulval with an 18 day old Blue bull for Messrs. R.G. Keast & Son of Allet selling well at 285. Another young bull calf sold to 295 being a Limousin x for Mr. M.J. Brown of Scorrier. On the heifer side, again British Blue crosses led the way with a pair for Messrs. L.T. Harvey & Sons of Newbridge at 185 and calves from both Messrs. D. Philp & Son of Pelynt and Messrs. J.S. LAMBS (254) FINISHED & STORE SHEEP Auctioneer Ed Harris A good entry for the time of year, and prices have been rising again with an SQQ average of 191p/kg. Strong demand for the mediumweight lambs with finish being key over weight. A strong top price of 92 for two producers, firstly for a smart pen of continental x lambs from Messrs. A.J. & S.T. Richards of St. Keverne; and also heavyweight Texels from Messrs. P.J. Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, both purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Breaking the 2/kilo barrier at 201p/kg this was a pen of well-finished 45.5kg lambs from Mr. R. Shazell of Tregamere. Our buyers have indicated that it will be Business as Usual for both Markets shouldering the Christmas period (19 th December & 2 nd January) and so we encourage producers to market lambs on the current strong trade.
