MATH- Mr. Koehlinger/Mrs. Silveus 6th Grade Academic Math will be working on Chapters 4 and 5 during the month of October. We will be working with GCF s, LCM s, and using those to get a better understanding of how they apply to fractions, so when we move on to Chapter 5 we will be fully prepared. Chapter 5 consists of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. Accelerated Math will be working on Chapters 3 and 4 during the month of October. We will continue to use integers as we solve our equations in chapter 3. We will end with Fractions and Decimals. We have started the year off well and look forward to the exciting year ahead. SOCIAL STUDIES- Mr. Kochert/Mr. Lochmueller Congratulations to many of the kids who have gotten off to a great start in the 1 st quarter. Please remember to check the webpage for access to your student s grades and upcoming homework requirements. After studying the different cultures of the World, we moved to our next unit Government and Economics. The students had the opportunity to test their knowledge of the Stock Market through our Stock Market game. Looking forward to October we will be studying the ancient civilizations of the Maya, Aztec and Inca groups. 7th Grade SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Williams/Mr. Nees The 7 th grade Social Studies classed have started studying the countries in the Middle East. The students will be studying different cultures, governments, economies, religions, and people from this volatile part of the world. The classes will also be learning about terrorism and the numerous terrorist organizations that have infiltrated the region. Also, the students will be starting their first project of the year during this time. Please ask you son or daughter about their Tic-Tac-Toe project. KEYBOARDING & COMPUTER APPLICATIONS Mrs. Hipskind Students in Mrs. Hipskind s class are practicing their keyboarding skills each day using a program called Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. Students took a diagnostic test in August and are on an individualized typing plan to increase their speed and accuracy. The goal is for each student to reach 20 AWPM and as close to 100% accuracy by the end of the 9 weeks. For extra practice at home, go to Mrs. Hipskind s web page for links to online typing lessons and games. The Cyber Safety unit and the MS Word were completed in September and students are currently researching information on the Geologic Timescale. Their finished PowerPoint project will be presented in class complete with sound effects, music, animation effects, and hyperlinks. 8th Grade SCIENCE Mr. Clinkenbeard/Mrs. McNiece Students in 8 th grade will be continuing our study of the atom during the month of October. Students will investigate and simulate experiments that were done in the early 1900 s to show how the atomic theory was developed. Students will also have the opportunity to better understand how the periodic table is arranged and understand how to use the information found on it. Chapter 3 has proven to be a challenge for 8 th graders, we must be ready to work hard and review daily at home. 8TH GRADE FIELD TRIP FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9TH REENACTMENT WAR OF 1812 MISSISSINEWA BATTLEFIELD MARION, INDIANA
What a great start to the year it has been! The guidance office has enjoyed watching students settle into this new school year. We are excited to see the growth this year is sure to bring. So far this fall we have had the opportunity to do several presentations with students on a variety of topics. In September we met with all 6th and 7 th graders to discuss digital responsibility. We feel that it is important to take a proactive approach in helping students understand the benefits and consequences of having an online presence, and how what they do online can affect what happens here at school. Our 7 th grade students had the opportunity to hear a presentation by our school resource officers Toby Rhymer and Corey Schrader on digital safety and the legal consequences of sending and receiving inappropriate content online. We encourage all parents to continue these conversations at home with their student, as it is so vital to this age group! Check out the Social Media and Technology Recommendations under the Guidance tab on the CMS webpage for more resources. 8 th graders will be receiving this information through a presentation by McMillen Health Center in the coming weeks. In the middle of September we met with 8 th grade students in Personal Finance classes to discuss high school diploma requirements. Prior to our presentation, students had the opportunity to explore career interests using the Bridges Program. Students then spent time researching classes offered at Carroll High School and created a sample 2-4 year high school plan. School counselors from the high school will visit our building in the winter to discuss this again with all 8 th grade students and help prepare them to select their high school courses in the spring. As always, if there is a way you feel the Guidance office can assist your student academically, socially, or personally, please do not hesitate to contact us! Amber Starkel & Jeremy Heidenreich www.offenderwatch.com Please remember to have frequent conversations with your children about being safe in their community. This includes talking to them about being cautious and recognizing suspicious behaviors in adults; because unfortunately, there are adults in our community who do harmful things to children. As a resource to our community, please feel free to visit offenderwatch.com where you can select the public option, fill out the form with your address, and view a map that highlights offenders in your area. This is a proactive approach to knowing the dangers in our community and one more step in keeping our children safe.
