The Monthly Newsletter of The Central Florida Metal Detecting Club February 2015 From The President s Desk By Alan James A few weeks ago members of the Central Florida Metal Detecting Club, at the request of the Deland Naval Air Museum, assisted in the search for clues which may help identify the pilot of a downed training aircraft. According to the information we have, this aircraft was most likely one of six that crashed during training between 1943 and 1944 after flying out of the Deland air base. If this information is correct, then we were searching for evidence which could identify a pilot who is still considered Missing-in-Action. During this very brief search, the CFMDC search team recovered approximately 100+ parts from this aircraft, all of which were turned over to the museum to be placed on display. Shortly after this search became public, the museum received a request from the Navy that we stop searching this site until they could decide how to handle things. We, of course agreed to stop our efforts until further notice. Now we have received further notice. Because of the professionalism shown via our website videos, pictures, etc, (they did review all of our website) The Navy has asked that we again participate in an organized search effort for additional items related to this crash site. On Wednesday February 18, we have been asked to attend the Navy s orientation at 9:00AM which will be held at the Deland Naval Air Museum in Deland. This orientation will allow Navy representatives the opportunity to lay out their game plan for searching the crash site. Wednesday will only be orientation.no detecting. On Thursday & Friday, we will begin searching under the direction of the Navy. Those of you who are able to attend on Wednesday morning are encouraged to do so to help represent the CFMDC. NOTE: If you do not attend the orientation, I am not certain the Navy will allow you to participate the following days. On January 18, 2015 the CFMDC was called in to assist the Kissimmee Police Department in the search for a weapon which they believed may have been thrown into a retention pond shortly after a murder. As always, we accepted the challenge, however after several hours of searching, we came up empty handed. This was a very tough search and I ll post a letter which I received from the Chief of Police regarding this event at the next meeting. The members of the CFMDC have stepped up to the plate many times over the past years and I am extremely proud to call myself a member of Central Florida Metal Detecting Club and each of you should be proud also. On another note, it s time to start getting your registrations in for the Central Florida Sunshine Shootout & Relic hunt to be held April 11, 2015. The forms and additional information are available on the club website at www.thecfmdc.com We will have a club hunt (Feb 21, 2015) the weekend after our normal meeting. More specific information will be announced at the meeting. I ll see you at the next meeting.

If your last name begins with A through M bring a side dish and if your last name begins with N through Z bring a dessert to share. Alan James As the club president and representing the club, officially the finds that are planted at a hunt are not eligible for the finds tables. Anything physically put into the ground at a hunt is not to be included in the finds you submit at the meetings. Scott Jackson We may be able to increase participation by changing the categories, i.e., divide coins by date, limit group finds to a specific number or specify a display tray size. From January through April each year we have lots of finds put onto the tables, then the participation falls to 10-18 members bringing in finds for the remainder of the year. Alan James - We would like to open the meeting for discussion and comment from the floor: Open Discussion from the floor Proposal The club will purchase 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place plates for the finds table winners.
