Cole chronicle Providing news and information to Cole Canoe Base since 1964 Volume LV Number 3 March, 2019 Camp Director Greeting Hello leaders, Camp is a few short months away and it s time to really ramp up your promotion and preparation for camp. Camp is the outdoor laboratory of scouting so, bring your whole troop and bring some new members too. For all thing involving Black Pug, please contact our Program Chair, Chris Smith (scs_blondie@yahoo.com) and for questions about program contact me (gus.chutorash@scouting.com). We appreciate you choosing Michigan Camps Cole Canoe Base. Welcome home. Gus Chutorash Camp Director Welcome Home! In each issue of the electronic Chronicle we plan to help you get ready for a great week at Cole Canoe Base. Cole is a fast paced program that can get away from you quickly. Please check out the Health Form policy below: Effective January 1, 2010 the only health form that we are allowed to accept is the BSA Annual Health & Medical Record. Please visit the following link for the current health form: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/ HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx. Parts A, B (both sides), and C must be completed including ALL required signatures for anyone (youth or adult) staying in camp longer than 72 hours. Sports physicals and/or any other physical forms will not be accepted. Participants arriving without the proper health form will be expected to complete the proper form at their expense to be able to remain in camp - no exceptions! Adults without Part C will not be permitted access to the waterfront or be allowed at camp longer than 72 hours. Adult leaders will also be required to go through a health check with the unit at check-in. Any camper arriving to camp, who does not possess a valid BSA Health Form, will not be admitted onto camp property. There will be no refunds for anyone who is not admitted to camp due to an invalid health form. All health forms must be renewed annually for both youth and adults. The BSA Health Form is valid until the last day of the month one year after it was issued (i.e. if your health form is dated June 6, 2017 - it is valid until June 30, 2018). Per State of Michigan policy, all Health Forms must be kept on file at Camp - HEALTH FORMS WILL NOT BE RETURNED - please bring a photocopy to camp - we are not able to provide a copy of your Health Form to you. Get everyone to get their physical soon and get that out of the way. Copyright 2019 Cole Canoe Base, Michigan Crossroads Council, Boy Scouts of America

Page Two High Adventure Opportunities Still Available for 2019! It seems Summer Camp is right around the corner, but it s not to late to start planning your 2019 Cole Canoe Base High Adventure Trek! There are still a number of opportunities available for this summer. Beyond the famous Rifle River 50 Miler, we also have opportunities open for 75 and 100 Milers, as well as the Grand Island Backpacking Adventure. All of these opportunities are open for registration to all units. We also have two Provisional opportunities available this summer, during the first two weeks of August. First, the nationally recognized Great Lakes Kayak Adventure is available to all Scouts and leaders ages 14+. Additionally, we are excited to announce our newest High Adventure opportunity, the provisional U.P. ATV Trek will be open to all scouts and leaders ages 16+. These are just a few of the exciting High Adventure opportunities available through Cole Canoe Base. For more information, contact Gregg Zdan at Gregory.Zdan@Scouting.org.

Page Three We re Looking Forward to Seeing You All adult and youth leaders are encouraged to attend a Pre-Camp Leader s meeting to get the 2019 summer camp started. Come to a meeting near you. The program will be the same at each session so, if one date doesn t work for you, choose another date and venue. These meetings are important for you to get the latest information for 2019.

Page Nine Animation Nation Explanation Animation fills the world around us without us even realizing it. Animation is described as the technique of displaying a series of images in rapid succession to create the illusion of movement. Many kids see it in its most basic format; video games. But these technological marvels are not the only place we see it, and they are not the only use for animation careers. Cole Canoe Base is now proud to offer the Animation Merit Badge as another available badge. The merit badge will introduce scouts to the art of animation, how to create their own animations, the way animation is used and experienced (not only through TV and video games), and the fun and exciting career opportunities that animation has to offer. The requirements are designed to expose scouts to several forms of animation but not turn them into professional animators. The experience through this merit badge is designed for all ages, and not just young scouts, but also those in the senior ranks. The merit badge will not be the only introduction about animation. Other activities, including animating contests and the ability to create a video for them to take home will also be available during the week s activities. Some of the activities will require a camera so be prepared to bring one if you have it. Hope to see many of you on the drawing board soon! To sign up for this merit badge, scouts will need to visit the Main Street USA table during the Sunday Night Expo! This is where scouts can sign up for badges that are not on the list as well as events during the week. Merit Badge Registration Opened March 4th. Merit badge registration was open at 12:01 am on March 4th. You will need the name of each registered scout camping. Each scout will have to have $150 paid in order to register for merit badges. Don t panic. If you don t have scouts signed-up for badges right away they will still be able to get the merit badges they want. We will find a way to give them what they want. Remember, Cole is open all year. Come experience winter camping at Cole Canoe Base
