WALLACE NAMED OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK Guard Josiah Wallace has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week following his performance at the visitcurrituckobx.com Battle in the Blue Ridge. Wallace scored 72 points over three games shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from 3-point range. Wallace opened the tournament with 22 points against Gardner-Webb. He then scored 31 points against Arkansas State with all of those points coming in the second half and overtime period. He wrapped up the tournament with 19 points against UNC Wilmington. WINNING ON THE GLASS RESULTS IN WINS Eastern Illinois has held its own on the glass this season as the Panthers have a plus 0.2 rebound margin for the year. EIU is 3-3 on the season with all three wins coming in games that EIU has won the rebounding battle. EIU had a 35-23 rebound margin in the win over Gardner-Webb with 11 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points. Against Arkansas State, EIU ended with a 45-42 margin on the glass with 13 offensive rebounds resulting in 17 second chance points. On the year EIU is averaging 10.6 offensive rebounds per game with 66 second chance points (12 ppg). Spoonhour was previously the head coach at Moberly Area Community College where he coached for three seasons. He was a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in 1994. He was an honorable mention All- Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is 188-141; 88-113 at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is 82-109 with an OVC mark of 44-54. Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a 97-91 win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Eastern Illinois posted a 2-1 record over Thanksgiving weekend at the visitcurrituckobx.com Battle in the Blue Ridge. EIU trailed at halftime in the first two games and would rally back to beat Gardner-Webb 79-78 on a pair of Rade Kukobat free throws in the final seconds. EIU would get 31 second half points from Josiah Wallace to beat Arkansas State in overtime 90-86. In the final game, EIU fell short to UNC Wilmington 82-65. SCOUTING PURDUE FORT WAYNE Jon Coffman is in his fifth season as the head coach at Purdue Fort Wayne and eighth season on the Mastodons staff. In the previous four seasons Coffman has guided PFW to four post season appearances. This season the team is off to a 4-4 start following a road win at Cleveland State. The Mastodons have three players averaging double figures led by John Konchar with 16.4 points per game. The team has five players that have made ten or more 3-pointers this season. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the sixth meeting between Eastern Illinois and Purdue Fort Wayne. The Mastodons lead the all-time series 4-1 including a 86-65 win over the Panthers on Dec. 21, 2013. Kukobat opened play with 12 points against Gardner-Webb including a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining to give EIU the one point win. He just missed a doubledouble with 13 points, nine rebounds against Arkansas State. Kukobat is currently fifth in the OVC in blocked shots with nine and tenth in rebounding at 6.8 per game. Mack Smith played with first half foul trouble in all three games in Asheville, NC over the weekend but still averaged 11.6 points per game with most of his scoring coming in the second half of each game. Smith posted his second career double-double against Arkansas State finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. An All-OVC Newcomer selection last season Smith has been in double figures in four of the Panthers six games this season. Kashawn Charles had his best game of his EIU career in the Friday game against Gardner- Webb. After not scoring in his first two games as a Panther, Charles had six points at home against Western Illinois. At the Battle in the Blue Ridge he averaged eight points per game with 11 coming off the bench against GWU. Charles was 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from 3-point range in the win. He is shooting 46.7 percent from 3-point range this season. After coming off the bench in the first four games of the season, senior Lucas Jones started the final two games of the Battle in the Blue Ridge. Jones opened tournament play with seven points and four rebounds against Gardner-Webb. In his first start against Arkansas State, Jones added six points, five rebounds. He made his first five shots of the season before going scoreless in the final game of the tournament against UNC Wilmington. In the Panthers home opener against Western Illinois, freshman Ben Harvey had a doubledouble with 11 points, 10 rebounds including the game winning basket off an offensive rebound. Harvey had his third double figure scoring game of the season against UNC Wilmington finishing with 12 points off the bench. Harvey was 5-of-8 from the field in the game. During the three games in the Battle in the Blue Ridge, Harvey was 11-of-20 averaging 9 points per game. Last season in junior college, Shareef Smith ranked 13th in the nation in assists with 163. This season Smith has 11 assists with a season high six coming against Arkansas State. As a team EIU is only averaging 9.8 assists per game which is last in the OVC. Redshirt senior Terrell Lewis, the Panthers all-time assists leader, has been limited to playing in only two games this season due to an injury. In the two games he did play, Lewis has five assists. Braxton Shaw scored eight points against UNC Wilmington in the final game of the Battle in the Blue Ridge. It was the first time Shaw has scored since a four-point night in the opener at Texas. Shaw is currently 4-of-4 on free throws this season. JaQualis Matlock had a balanced night coming off the bench against Arkansas State. Matlock had seven points while pulling down seven rebounds. Five of Matlock s rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor. For the season he has ten offensive rebounds with 31 total boards.
