Page 3 2591Country Club J uly 2017 T U R F TALK Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer. How about that US Open, Erin Hills looked great and looked like a fun course to play. It was interesting seeing how mother nature effected the playing conditions during the championship, not only day to day, but hour to hour. The same goes even here at MCC. Mother Nature is constantly effecting our course conditions, sometimes for the better, and sometimes for the worse. Our course, being right on the Arkansas river, is effected by winds, rain, humidity, storms, lightning, and all of her elements, it s amazing to see how the course does truly change day to day. It s a constant balance and in my opinion, all about timing, to combat those elements and provide you the members the best playing conditions day to day. Many of our cultural practices, are all about timing. Some of you may have never seen some of the tasks being performed, all to provide better turf conditions. So far, this summer, we have aerified green surrounds and tees, verti-cut tees, we pulled cores as opposed to dragging them back in the profile, replace with new sand, we are doing an extensive amount of rolling on the putting surface, and our weekly verti-cut and topdressing of greens. All this to, keep the turf healthy and in top playing conditions. Many times, the course seems to be in good condition, then all of sudden, the very next day there may be holes in the greens, or lines from verti-cutting, or sand from topdressing. These are the essential cultural practices necessary to keep the turf healthy and consistent, and we appreciate everyone s patience and understanding while the crew is performing these tasks. Along with the cultural practices, we have been on an extensive spray program to combat undesired weeds, treating well over 50 acres. With all the rainfall we ve had this spring, weeds are more present and keeping everything mowed at our desired heights has been challenging. As we prepare for the upcoming, we encourage volunteers to come out and help us mow, as during the Four Ball. So be looking for a schedule volunteer form or just contact Lance. Also, I appreciate everyone who is participating in the adopt a hole, I can t express how much this means to our department. Thank you to everyone, this is allowing us to address issues out on the course that have been neglected for quite some time. Let s all keep taking pride in our Championship Course. See you on the course. Lance Norwood G/C Superintendent S A V E THE DATE... Page 4 Country Club J uly 2017 M W G A G O L F P R E S I D E N T SAVE THE DATE The MGA and are going together to start a Two Men/Two Women Scramble. Our Inaugural Event will be August 26/27. The proceeds from this tournament will go for golf course projects. This time we hope to build new bathroom elevated to withstand floods on the back nine. We are limiting this to 36 teams. We will have more information out with the invitation very shortly. Happy 3103Hour Tuesday- Friday 5-7pm SAVE THE DATE Inaugural MCC MGA & 2 Men/2 Women Scramble August 26th & August 27th Saturday -Tee Time 1:30pm Sunday - Tee Time 9:00am 36-Hole Scramble $400 Per Team We will be hosting Pleasant Valley ladies on August 16th in our Swap Day with them. Please plan to play and show our guests a good time. I am posting the tournament invitations that I receive in our Ladies Locker Room on the Bulletin Board. Rolling Hills Country Club in Cabot has a Mixed Scramble on July 15/16. They do a very easy tournament and usually serve some good homemade soup. We have several couples registered already for the Red Apple Mixed Scramble, July 29/30. We had a great crew of MCC couples last year, and I think we will have more this year. They have some new tees for ladies and some for men. Our congratulations to Sandy Carpenter and Debbie Pipkin for raising $2400 from the Garage Sale held at Sandy s. This should complete what they want to do in Ladies Locker Room. We are very proud of them for handling this and completing the Project. Thanks to Kathe Parson and her volunteers for enduring the rain in our Mixed Scramble. Morning players completed 18 holes, but our afternoon teams got pretty wet. Food was great and spirits were good. The gift of rounds of golf and $100 credit was given to all who played. I think everyone was happy with the reward, and will be back again next year. Kathe has a great gift for recruiting our teams. Wanda Jett did a super job with her ladies in the Annual Willie Odom 4-Ball Tournament. We are so lucky to have these ladies that work so hard to see that everything comes together and our guests have a good time. Our volunteers are something special. LET S KEEP HAVING A GREAT YEAR, Ruth Ann Trice President, G O L F Greetings from the golf shop! It is hard to believe the first half of the golf calendar is complete. Thank you for your patience as we went through our busy tournament and outing season. Nine and Dine We have had great numbers for our Thursday Night Couples golf events. Do miss out on this fun time to enjoy 9-holes of golf with friends. We tee off at 5:30pm each Thursday. Following play we announce the winners as dinner is served. Call the golf shop for more details and to be put on the Nine and Dine email list. Upcoming Events presented by Metro Appliances and More July 21 st 23 rd You will want to be a part of the 2017. Whether you are playing or not we have ways to get involved. Be a sponsor, a volunteer, or spotter and be a part of one of the premiere events at our club and in Arkansas. See you on the links! Cary
