STOUGHTON COUNTRY CLUB NEWS Volume XIX Number 6 June 2014 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By: Ted Waskowski We had a great May at the club with a number of successful events and the course is lush and beautiful. We all probably forgot what it was like to play without a heavy coat and stocking cap. The Board is working hard to try to make several planned projects a reality yet this year. Meanwhile, Lisa and Dick Spangler have decided to leave this paradise for parts north and so Lisa has left the board after years of positive contributions. Lisa and Dick created Jimmy Buffet night and many other fun events. Their energy and commitment made a difference that we all greatly appreciate. GOLF SHOP MEMO By: Steve Hlavacek We are making progress with the shelter and toilet facilities on the 13th hole. Several permits have been secured but we still need a variance from the Town of Pleasant Springs. When the ground firms up we will be able to get construction vehicles to the site and get going on the project. This project is possible through the generosity of Donn Wheeler. We have planted a tree in memory of Doug Klagos on hole #2, one of Doug's least favorite holes. Make sure you get to the golf shop and check your Classic Match Pairings!! Horse Race is scheduled for Sunday June 8th, at 8:00 AM. Our auction will be held on Saturday June 7th at 3:00 PM. This is a 2 better ball of 4 Event with handicap adjustment. Betting Window will be open form the end of the auction to 9:00 AM Sunday. Sign up in the golf shop. Currently we have only 16 players, make this event a success and sign up now! It's lots of fun!! Junior Lessons start on June 27th. There are three lesson times at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00. Call the golf shop for more information. If you are looking for golf equipment, the golf shop will match all online prices. FROM THE KITCHEN By: Daniel Minnema Dutch What a month it has been. Busy, busy. Friday night dining continues to grow. It is my pleasure cooking wonderful

specials and also feedback on the new menu has been positive. If there is anything you would like special, please ask your server and I will do my best to accommodate your request. Jimmy Buffet was a huge success. There was favorable turnout for this event I will be having a crab boil on Saturday the 7 th at 5:00. Reservations are required and must be made no later than Wednesday, June 4 th. I will be cooking outside on the back patio. This event will be a no silverware affair. We will have plenty of napkins available. There are a couple of weddings this month as well as the Stoughton Hospital Golf Outing, and the ASHRAE Golf Outing. While these events might take away from normal member golfing, they also provide a positive overhead not only for the club, but also the kitchen food sales. Tuesday nights will now feature a pasta buffet, which includes three pasta specials, vegetable, salad, and garlic bread for $11. Bring your guests, friends, and acquaintances and enjoy some fresh pasta meals. Men s night continues to be a huge success. Numbers continue to grow and I am always looking to create an awesome selection to eat. With ladies day on Wednesdays, especially during ladies auxiliary, please be patient around the noon hour if you are ordering lunch. It may take a little longer to get your lunch served as I have to plate these meals first. If you would like a box lunch prepared for you before you tee off, please let the bartender know of your order and it will be ready for you when you come off the ninth tee. It has been my pleasure creating menus, specials and buffets for all members, guests and friends. Thank you for all your positive feedback and happy eating!!! SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT From the desk of your Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, Tony Hudzinski. (Well, technically it s Mark s desk): I d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the nearly 11 years I ve been employed here at Stoughton Country Club. You may or may not know this but as private country clubs go, this one is special. I started my golf career at the age of 16 with Dell View Golf Course (now Wild Rock) in Lake Delton. Through the years I spent time working at Trapper s Turn, Chula Vista, La Crosse Country Club and Cherokee Country Club. I ve had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of fellow golf course superintendents over the past 18 years and I ve yet to hear of, or experience, a club with better working conditions and management (Steve and Mark) for a superintendent to work under than here at SCC. Our members truly appreciate everything we do to make the course as nice as possible for them and give us the freedom to perform those tasks as we see fit. This is very unique. At most private clubs the norm is to have 225 members trying to dictate how each part of the club operates which makes for miserable working conditions (Imagine having over 200 bosses to answer to at your job). So thank you again for letting us perform our daily duties as we deem necessary. By trusting in our knowledge

and professionalism you ve created an environment that allows me to honestly say that not once in 11 years have I woken up and not wanted to come to work here. As many of you have heard I am leaving the club to join my wife in pursuing our bar/restaurant business in Sun Prairie. We opened Ski s Saloon in October of 2011, had our first child, Lucy Rose, in February of 2013 and are in the process of renovating an old barber shop attached to our building into a yet unnamed restaurant (watch for a grand opening this fall). Over the past two and a half years my time has been stretched increasingly thin between my growing business, growing family and Stoughton Country Club. As much as I ll miss working outside on the course, my coworkers, and all of you, I decided the latter had to go. Let s face it, with a toddler, a bar, and a 5:30 AM daily alarm clock, this guy just needs a nap! Mark is in the process of looking for my replacement as I write this, and I ve promised to stay on until someone is hired. I may even come back throughout the summer to help out with big projects and scratch my shoveling itch. I know it sounds crazy, but I really do like shoveling so long as it s not 90+ degrees. (Carl Spackler) People think I m an idiot or something, cause all I do is mow lawns for a living. (Ty Webb) Oh, people don t say that about you. as far as you know. BAR COOLERS If you have a Stoughton Country Club collapsible cooler or a cart cooler, please return them to the bar. We started with 16 cart coolers and now have three. Thanks again to all of you at the club, I honestly would not have stayed here as long as I have if it wasn t the BEST workplace I ve ever had. I ll leave you with a quote from the most famous greenskeeper of all time, Bill Murray in Caddyshack:
