September 2015, Issue 16 We are ABCC Tennis The 2015-2016 League Season has begun! In a study conducted by the Tennis Industry Association, three of the top ten reasons people play tennis are: to meet new people, interact socially and competitively and to get a great work out in a short amount of time. League tennis, one of ABCC s most common forms of play, accomplishes all of these goals. With over sixty women, forty men and twenty-five juniors participating on thirteen teams, ABCC is one of Jacksonville s leaders in tennis activity. League tennis usually consists of one to two practices and one match per week. All league play varies on ability and to some degree age. Our ladies teams are grouped by ability, our junior teams are grouped by age and ability, and we offer some senior men s team options as well. Ability groups are classified by A (Advanced), B (Intermediate), C (Beginner) and D (Just Starting). The United States Tennis Association (USTA) also groups according to the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP). Classifications include 2.5 (Just Starting), 3.0 (Beginner), 3.5 (Beginner-Intermediate), 4.0 (Intermediate) and 4.5 (Intermediate- Advanced). We have all these levels and teams playing at ABCC! Our weekly fall lineup is below. Most of the 2015 and 2016 schedules are out and can be viewed on our tennis web site at http://www.usptaplayer.com/club/abcc/. Tuesday 9:30am: First Coast Women s C Wednesday 9:30am: Country Club Women s B Thursday 9:30am: First Coast Women s A and Country Club Women s C Friday 9:30am: Ladies Beaches Division 2 and Beaches Division 3, First Coast Women s D Friday 10am: Senior Men 3.5 and Senior Men 3.0 Friday 5pm: Junior Team Tennis- 10 and under, 12 and under, and 18 and under Saturday 9am: Men s C1 Team Sunday 1:30pm: Men s B Team Our teaching staff ALWAYS welcomes new or returning players to the beautiful Atlantic Beach Country Club Tennis Center. We will help make the connection to the group that is right for you! Sincerely, R.E.B. Phillips ABCC Head Tennis Professional USPTA, Elite 1

Letter from the President I m thrilled to throw out an impressive number at you as we kick off this month: 700! Well, 708, to be exact. Atlantic Beach Country Club recently surpassed 700 members full, sport, social and more and we re quickly approaching the caps for our membership categories. I couldn t be happier with all the positive growth we ve seen, and I know that the events and other offerings we have, and are planning for the coming months, will continue to draw even more members into our ABCC family. With September approaching, we are all gearing up to spend our first fall at the Club. After a relaxing and enjoyable summer season spent by the pool, on the tennis court or on the links, we are excited to host some new events as the leaves turn and the weather cools, such as College Football Saturdays with games on all the TVs and food and drink specials. And remember, it s never too early to contact Aaron Holley to reserve space for your holiday party. One of the summer events that will continue this fall is Thursday night trivia and buffet. My husband and I have enjoyed playing trivia with our kids, with friends and sometimes just the two of us; all kinds and sizes of teams are welcome! And while some questions stump us, others are easy and fun, like, In the game of chess, what piece moves in the shape of the letter L? Plus, the top three teams take home generous gift certificates at the end of the night, and we sure do have fun coming up with wacky team names! Thank you to all our members for continuing to support ABCC and the great programs we have planned for you and your families to enjoy. We have so many exciting things happening in the coming months, and I look forward to sharing those moments with all of you. See you around the club! --Kelley Strong 2 Website Registration Giveaway! Register for our website during the month of September and be entered for a chance to win lunch for two! All members who have already registered will be included in the drawing. Visit www.atlanticbeachcountryclub.com and click on the Member Login button to register. If you need assistance registering, please contact the Membership Office at 904-372-2223. She will be graduating this spring with a Bachelor s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Kelly has been serving at Atlantic Beach Country Club since February.

TENNIS UPDATE For a complete update on all tennis happenings, visit our tennis page at www. usptaplayer.com/club/abcc. Free Ball Machine Demo Day: Friday, September 11th at 11:30am Get first hand instruction on how the ball machine can take your game to a new level! Stan Oley, founder of Fit by Tennis in 60 days, brings his 25 years of ball machine experience to ABCC for an instructional free clinic on the how to s of ball machine use. A limited amount of annual passes are for sale in the tennis shop. Ball machine rates 1. Single annual membership is $120 and is good from September 1st to August 31st of the following year. 2. Household annual membership (2 or more users) $180 (September 1st to August 31st) 3. Hourly rate is $20. The 2015-2016 League Season is here. This will be our first normal year since the Club began construction in November 2013. All home match schedules are on the website. All court reservations will go through the Sports Shop. Any discrepancies will be handled by REB. There is no doubt that home match days are going to pinch social play, but the dust will settle and we will all find our best time to play. This will be a first for all of us so let s collaborate and conquer in the harmonious and bohemian beach style we all embrace! Our next big club-wide tennis event is the Doubles Member-Member Club Championships set for October 16-18. The vision is that this will be our annual state of the union opportunity with a dinner and awards ceremony honoring those great moments and people that shaped ABCC tennis that year. Sponsorships are available. We have two s Friday night mixers on the calendar. These are set for September 11th and 25th. Encourage your fellow tennis players to sign up and show up for a great evening of social tennis. For a complete daily listing of all the tennis happenings go to www.usptaplayer.com/club/abcc and click under upcoming events. Personal Goal Setting - A great way to improve during the new season! Taking your own personal inventory is a great way to face the new season. 1. What do I want to accomplish this year on the team? 2. What are my best shots? What are my worst shots? 3. How is my mental game during competition? These are three really simple examples of taking inventory. Answers will, of course, vary per individual. A simple answer would be: I just play for the fun of it, to get out of the house, to have lunch with friends, and, of course, for the exercise. For some, the match results are just not that important. Others, however, might be really fascinated with the complexity of the game and want to dig deeper in strokes, strategy and peak performance. Now is a great time to take your personal inventory and map out YOUR intended tennis future. Vasil and REB will be happy to help you in this endeavor! September Junior After School Program: Red Ball (starts September 1st) Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5pm. Cost is $15 daily or $90 monthly. Orange Ball (starts September 1st) Tuesday through Friday from 4-5pm. Cost is $15 daily or $130 monthly. Full Court- Tuesday through Friday from 5-6:30pm. Cost is $20 daily or $150 monthly. 5
