Introduction The North Ryde Dockers Junior AFL Club is a significant contributor to North Ryde and surrounding community attracting more than 180 junior footballers and their families to the club every year who want to actively participate in the great and growing game of AFL football. We are proud to invite you to become a sponsor of the 2015 season, which we expect to be another successful season for our young and growing club. The importance of junior sport for children s physical activity Physical activity plays a key role in children s health and wellbeing from a young age. These benefits include better fitness and bone health, fewer cardiovascular disease risk factors (eg, unhealthy weight, blood pressure), better mental health (eg, selfesteem, self-confidence), greater social connections and interactions, and improved cognitive outcomes (eg, better academic performance, better learning outcomes). With one-in-four children overweight or obese in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2013), the importance of promoting and supporting children s participation in physical activity and sport has never been greater. Reduced outdoor play and declining levels of walking and cycling to school, and increased time in front of screens (TV viewing, computer use, electronic games) means that sport is playing a major role in helping children to meet national physical activity guidelines (60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day and 3 days a week of bone and muscle strengthening activities). Recent data show that approximately 45% of children s physical activity is derived from sport. A much greater investment in youth sport is needed in Australia, not only for children s current health and happiness, but also for laying a strong foundation for lifelong participation in active living. Background Our History North Ryde Dockers Australian Football Club, with a history that goes back as far as 1965, is a local Aussie Rules footy club based at ELS Hall Ovals in Kent Rd, Marsfield. The club provides the opportunity for players from 5 years of age to 17 years of age to participate and develop skills in AFL football. The club has a culture of inclusion and has developed strong community links with families and other local community organisations. In March 1997 local Ryde resident Andrew Moylan reformed the club under the Constitution of the North Ryde RSL and Youth Club. Andrew s efforts with his wife Cathy re-established the club, playing competition games at ELS Hall Park in Marsfield and making the Ryde community aware AFL was back on the local sporting agenda as a new alternate winter sport for young children's participation. A few years ago the AFL launched a new program called "Auskick" which became a successful club recruitment program and is still today the backbone of AFL in junior and school levels. ELS Hall oval Marsfield remains the only dedicated AFL ground in the municipality of Ryde and was presented new AFL goalposts by the AFL on Tuesday 23rd May 2006 to establish the true identity and the future home of the AFL code in Ryde. 2008 saw North Ryde reach the Grand Finals in 3 Divisions with the Under 13 team winning a Premiership. The club remains successful on and off the field with premiership success in 2013 with the under 13 s team. 2014 Teams and Season The 2015 season is expected to be another exciting and successful year for the club. The season is scheduled to commence in April 2015. In 2015 we plan to be able to field 10 junior teams. Invitation Make a real impact by providing children with the opportunity to develop through sports participation. Your contribution will make a real difference: The Impact Play is an important and fundamental right in Childhood. Sport and play help a child develop cognitive function, social skills, explore, invent, express their emotions and gain confidence and self respect. With our busy lifestyle and other social barriers, for many children the chance to learn and grow through sport is not readily available robbing them of some of the most important experiences in childhood. Local community sporting clubs and their volunteers provide a vital and important role in the development of children providing effective and safe access to play and physical exercise. This role can not be undervalued however the access to financial support for clubs like the North Ryde Dockers is often non-existent. You have an opportunity to support this vital role and get something back at the same time. Funds raised through sponsorship will be directed towards, sporting equipment, development and training and club facilities that are all focussed on enhancing the experience and development of young footballers.
