MINN won, 81-68 Williams Arena, Minneapolis - 1/22/14 UP NEXT: UW HOSTS MINNESOTA IN BORDER BATTLE No. 21 Wisconsin will host Minnesota on Thursday, Feb. 13 on ESPN. The Badgers have won 15 of the last 16 home meetings with the Gophers but are looking to avenge a loss in Minneapolis earlier this season. Up next, Wisconsin travels to No. 15 Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 16 on CBS. The Wolverines topped the Badgers 77-70 in Madison last month. NOTES TO KNOW 1 RESUME STILL STRONG: UW opened the season 16-0, its best-ever start. Now 19-5, the Badgers are No. 7 in the RPI, having faced the nation s 3rd-toughest schedule. UW is 5-2 against the current AP Top 25, the most such wins of any team in the nation. 2 ON THE OFFENSIVE: Wisconsin is enjoying its best offense of the Bo Ryan era, averaging 73.0 ppg (up 8.0 ppg from last season), while ranking 9th in the nation in offensive efficiency with an average of 1.18 points per possession. 3 WHY THEY RE GOOD: UW boasts its most productive offense in 19 years, but is also 3rd in the Big Ten in scoring defense (63.1 ppg), 2nd in the nation in fewest TOs (8.6 per game) and lead the NCAA in fewest fouls (15.0 per game). 4 DYNAMIC DEKKER: Selected to the Wooden Player of the Year Award Midseason Top-25, Sam Dekker has posted 4 double-doubles this season and leads UW in both scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg). 5 HAYES PRAISE: Nigel Hayes won his 3rd Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor Monday after scoring 14 pts in each of UW s wins last week. Only Ohio State (8) has a longer active streak of consecutive 20-win seasons. 8 BO KNOWS BIG TEN: Mid-season national coach of the year, Bo Ryan won his 150th Big Ten game on Sunday and his.698 (150-65) win percentage in Big Ten games is the 2nd-best mark in history (chart on page 12). 9 BALANCING ACT: Six different players have led UW in scoring in at least 2 games this season and the Badgers boast 5 players averaging double-digit points in Big Ten play, no other school has more than 3. MINNESOTA Wisconsin and Minnesota will be playing for the 195th time Thursday night, making the Gophers the most played opponent in UW history. Minnesota leads the all-time series 102-92, however the Badgers own a 60-33 edge in games played in Madison. Bo Ryan owns a 16-6 (.727) record against Minnesota overall, including a sparkling 9-1 mark against the Gophers at the Kohl Center. The Badgers have won 5 of the last 7 games against the Gophers, but Minnesota won this season s earlier contest, 81-68, in Minneapolis. The home team has won each of the last 4 meetings and 7 of the last 8 dating back to 2009. Wisconsin has won 15 of the last 16 games against Minnesota in Madison. In fact, the Gophers are a mere 1-12 overall at the Kohl Center, pulling out a 78-74 overtime win in 2009. Prior to that, Minnesota s last win in Madison came in 1994 at the UW Field House. Sophomore Sam Dekker scored in double fi gures in all 3 career meetings with Minnesota, including 20 points and 6 rebounds in this season s earlier meeting. Dekker is averaging 14.7 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Dekker has gone 5-for-13 from 3-point range and 15-for-18 at the FT line in 3 games against the Gophers. Junior Traevon Jackson averaged 7.7 ppg in 3 meetings with Minnesota. In the Badgers 45-44 win over the Gophers at the Kohl Center last season, Jackson sank UW s fi nal two baskets, including a game-winning 15-foot jumper with just 2.1 seconds remaining. Freshman Nigel Hayes tallied 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal in this season's earlier meeting with Minnesota. The Badgers roster has 2 players from the state of Minnesota, both of whom are redshirting this season: junior Jordan Smith (Orono) and freshman Riley Dearring (Minnetonka). UW is also ranked No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches poll. UW had spent 14 of 15 weeks in the AP poll this season. UW enjoyed 6 weeks in the AP top 5, reaching as high as No. 3. That marked the Badgers highest AP ranking since a 12-week stretch in the top 4 from Dec. 18, 2006 to March 5, 2007. That included a stop at No. 1 on Feb. 19, 2007. KOHL CENTER AMONG TOUGHEST VENUES Even though the Badgers have dropped 3 home games this season, Wisconsin has only lost a TOTAL of 21 home games in the Bo Ryan era. In 13 seasons under Ryan, the Badgers are an incredible 192-21 (.901) at the Kohl Center. UW s.901 winning percentage since 2001-02 is good for 5th in the nation. Only Duke, Kansas, Gonzaga and Memphis have better home records in that span (pg 11). Three of UW s 5 longest home win streaks have come under Bo Ryan, including the school-record 38 straight from 12/7/2002 to 1/25/2005. ROAD WARRIORS Under Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is renowned for its incredible home record, but the Badgers have also enjoyed remarkable success on the road. Wisconsin is 8-2 away from home this season, going 3-0 in neutral site games and 5-2 in true road venues. He was also on the preseason watch list for the Naismith Trophy. Dekker scored a team-high 16 points in the win at Illinois (2/4). He also led UW with 4 assists and equaled his career high with 4 3-pointers (4-7). Dekker has made 7 of his last 13 3-point attempts over the last last 2 games. Dekker is 1 of 4 Big Ten players to make the midseason list and joins Devin Harris (2004) and Alando Tucker (2007) as recent Badgers on this list. The Sheboygan, Wis., native has scored in double figures in all but 4 games this season, and ranks 13th in the Big Ten averaging 13.5 ppg. He ranks 13th in the conference pulling in 6.0 rpg. Dekker is one of just 4 players in the Big Ten averaging at least 13.5 ppg and 6 rpg (along with MSU s Adreian Payne, NU s Drew Crawford and ILL s Rayvonte Rice). Dekker has posted 4 double-doubles (West Virginia, Marquette, Prairie View A&M and Michigan) this season and three 20-point games. Only 4 players in the Big Ten have more doubledoubles this season. Dekker set career highs with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge vs. West Virginia, earning tournament MVP. The Badgers have held 9 opponents below 60 points this season and have limited 5 of their 11 Big Ten opponents to 40% shooting or less. In UW s 48-38 win over Virginia, the Badgers relied on their trademark defense to pull out a rare road win in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. UW limited UVA to just 38 points and 23.4% shooting. The 38 points were the fewest allowed by the Badgers in a road game since a 44-34 win over Washington Univ. (St. Louis) in 1957. The Cavaliers 38 points were their second fewest in the shot clock era (since 1986) and the.234 FG% (11-47) was 4th-lowest in UVA history. The Badgers held the Cavs without a FG for stretches of 8:43 and 9:03 in the 2nd half. In fact, UVA had just 3 total field goals in the 2nd half. DEFENSE WITHOUT FOULING Even with the new defensive emphasis from officials, the Badgers are again among the nation s best at defending without fouling. UW leads the nation, averaging just 15.0 fouls per game. UW s opponents are averaging just 14.0 free throw attempts this season, which is also the fewest in the NCAA. By comparison, UW finished 3rd in the nation averaging 14.0 fouls per game in 2012-13 and opponents shot an average of 13.9 FTs per game. TRENDS TO TRACK Dating back to Feb. of 2011, UW has won 74 of its last 76 games when leading or tied with 5:00 left, including a mark of 18-1 mark this season. The only losses have been to Ohio State this season (led 54-50) and at Minnesota last season (led 49-43). UW has won 104 of its last 106 games when shooting a higher FG% than its opponents, including a mark of 13-1 this season and 18-0 last season. The Badgers lost at Indiana this season despite shooting 53.3%, while IU shot 51.6%. The Badgers have won their last 16 games when shooting at least 40.0% from 3-point range. That includes a record of 9-0 this season. UW is 10-5 when shooting under 40.0% on the year. GASSER AFFECTS WINNING You want to talk about a guy who can affect winning in multiple ways, you are talking about Josh Gasser. He has drawn the assignment of guarding the best guy and I said it earlier, when they need a basket, a moment, a guy to deliver, this is one of the guys you can turn to. He knows how to do it. - ESPN s Doris Burke, Dec. 4, 2013 As a sophomore in 2012, Josh Gasser was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and ranked 2nd in the Big Ten shooting 45.2% from 3-point range. After missing last season with a knee injury, he has picked up right where he left off -- at both ends of the fl oor. In the Badgers' 60-58 win over No. 9 Michigan State, Gasser guarded the Big Ten's leading scorer at the time, Gary Harris (18.2 ppg), holding him to a season-low 6 points on 3-for-20 shooting. In UW s win at Virginia, Gasser guarded preseason All-ACC pick and leading scorer Joe Harris all night and limited him to 2 points on 1-for-10 shooting in 33 minutes. Harris scored 22 against UW last year while Gasser was redshirting. Gasser then guarded Marquette s Jake Thomas and held him without a shot attempt in the 25 minutes he was on him. Thomas entered averaging 7.2 shot attempts per game. Gasser ranks 3rd in the B1G shooting 42.6% from 3-point range, going 29-of-68 from downtown. Gasser is also among the Big Ten s best FT shooters, ranking 2nd at 85.7% (72-for-84). He also ranks among UW s all-time 3-point and free throw shooters, ranking 10th all-time behind the arc (40.2%) and 4th all-time at the stripe (.829). FRANKLY, KAMINSKY SET RECORD Frank Kaminsky earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Nov. 25 after scoring a Wisconsin schoolrecord 43 points on 16-for-19 shooting (6-for-6 from 3-point range) against North Dakota on Nov. 19. Kaminsky s total surpassed the record of 42 held by Ken Barnes (vs. Indiana, 3/8/65) and Michael Finley (at Eastern Michigan, 12/10/94). Kaminsky s 43 points are the second-most scored by a Division I player this season. BADGERS SIGN ONE FOR THE CLASS OF 2014 ETHAN HAPP 6-8, 200 Taylor Ridge, Ill. (Rockridge HS) An AP first-team All-State selection as a junior, Ethan Happ has led Rockridge High School to a 21-0 start to the 2013-14 season and the No. 1 Illinois Class 2A ranking. Happ is averaging a double-double, scoring over 30 points per game and grabbing 13 rebounds. Happ averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game last season as a junior. Bo Ryan on Ethan Happ: We are thrilled to add Ethan to the Wisconsin basketball family. In addition to being a skilled player with a versatile game, he is a terrific person off the court as well. His GPA is around 3.75 and he ll fit in well in Madison from both a basketball and academic standpoint. On the court, Ethan has been a part of some very successful programs both at the high school and AAU level with the Quad City Elite. His versatility and ability to play numerous positions will be a great addition to our roster. Offensively, can handle the ball, shoot, pass and rebound. Perhaps the most exciting element is his work ethic and desire to improve. We were really impressed at his willingness to do the work necessary to get better as a player. Kaminsky s 43 points matches the 43 scored by Illinois Brandon Paul against OSU (1/10/12) as the most by a Big Ten player since 1996-97. In fact, Kaminsky and Paul are two of only four 40-point efforts by a Big Ten player in that span, joining Minnesota s Andre Hollins (41 vs. Memphis, 11/23/12) and Ohio State s Jared Sullinger (40 vs. IUPUI, 12/9/10). Kaminsky set the UW single-game record in just 28 minutes. Since 1996-97, Kaminsky is one of just 4 players to have scored 43 points against a Div. 1 opponent in 28 minutes or less: Ed Gray (Cal) had 48 vs. Washington State in 1997, Brian Burke (Lafayette) had 43 vs. Lehigh in 2002 and Stephen Curry (Davidson) had 43 vs. Appalachian State in 2009. Kaminsky and Chris Kaman are the only 7-foot Division I players to score 40-plus points in a game over the last 15 seasons. Kaman had 43 points for Central Michigan in a win over Ball State (2/19/03).

With 971 career points, Brust needs just 29 points to become the 38th member of Wisconsin s 1,000-point club. He would be the 12th Badgers player to reach 1,000 points in the Bo Ryan era (13 seasons). He has essentially done it in 3 seasons considering that he scored just 10 points as a freshman. Brust also has the chance to go down as the most prolific 3-point shooter in Wisconsin history. This season, Brust ranks 13th in the conference, shooting 38.1% (59-155) from behind the arc. For his career, Brust has made 198 3-pointers, which ranks 5th in UW history. He needs 15 treys to pass Jason Bohannon (212, 2007-10) for 4th place. ACTION JACKSON Junior Traevon Jackson entered last season as the team s third-string point guard, but worked his way into the starting lineup by the season s 7th game a year ago. Now with 53 starts under his belt, Jackson has solidified himself as one of the better lead guards in the Big Ten. Jackson is 4th on the Badgers averaging 10.8 ppg. He has scored in double figures 13 times season including a career-high 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting at Indiana (1/14). Jackson is averaging a team-high 4.0 assists per game, the 5th-best mark in the Big Ten. Most recently, Jackson equaled his career high by dishing out 8 assists vs. Michigan State. Last season Jackson owned a 1.36 assist-toturnover ratio (99 assists, 73 turnovers). He has increased that to a 1.73 ratio in 2013-14, dishing 97 assists with 56 TOs - a ratio ranks 10th in the Big Ten. Jackson has also increased his offensive effi ciency this season. His scoring average is up from 6.9 ppg to 10.8 this season, while his 3-point shooting has gone up to 37.9% from 29.3% a year ago. CAPTAIN CLUTCH Following the Badgers Feb. 9 win over Michigan State, ESPN analyst Dan Dakich tweeted out the following: Tray Jax is THE most clutch last second player in the B10... dude does it every year Thanks to his fourth-career game-winning or game-tying basket, Traevon Jackson has certainly earned the reputation bestowed upon him by Dakich. Consider his resume: Feb. 9, 2014 (MSU) - With the game tied 58-58, Jackson hit a 12-foot pull-up jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining to give UW the 60-58 win. Nov. 12, 2013 (Florida) - Leading 56-53, Jackson hit an elbow jumper with 9.8 seconds left to clinch the Badgers 59-53 win. Feb. 6, 2013 (Iowa) - Trailing 58-55, Jackson hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 29 seconds left to send the contest to overtime, where UW would win, 74-70. Jan. 26, 2013 (Minnesota) - With the game tied 43-43, Jackson knocked down a game-winning 15-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds left to give UW the 45-44 win. FOUR TO REDSHIRT IN 2013-14 Junior Jordan Smith (17 career games), sophomore Zak Showalter (22 career games) and a pair of freshmen, Riley Dearring and Aaron Moesch have all elected to redshirt the 2013-14 season. ILL also has 5, but no other school has more than 3 over that span. Ryan s teams have posted a 144-60 (.706) Big Ten record, the best mark in the conference over the last 12 seasons. Michigan St. is second at 137-67 (.672) and Ohio St. is third at 135-69 (.662). Last season, Wisconsin posted a 12-6 record in the Big Ten, finishing in fourth place. The Badgers have notched double-digit conference wins in 11 of 12 years under Bo Ryan and have never finished lower than fourth place in the Big Ten standings. UW has posted a winning conference record in each of the last 13 seasons. Among the 6 major conferences, only Kansas (23 seasons) has a longer active streak of fi nishing above.500 in league play. ALL WE DO IS WIN, WIN, WIN Over the last seven seasons (since 2006-07), Wisconsin has accumulated an overall record of 187-64 (.745). WISCONSIN @BADGERMBB NOTES Wisconsin Coaching Staff BO RYAN HEAD COACH When Bo Ryan took over as head coach at Wisconsin in 2002, he was promptly dubbed Big Ten Coach of the Year in each of his first two seasons. Last year, his 12th at UW, Ryan proved he is still thought of in the same light, collecting the third Big Ten Coach of the Year award of his career. Now as Ryan enters his 30th season as a head coach in 2013-14 - his 13th atop the Wisconsin program - it s difficult to decide which is more impressive, his incredible longevity or his unparalleled success. It is, however, safe to say that the combination of the two is what elevates Ryan among college basketball s elite. Owning the most wins in UW annals (291 entering 2013-14), Ryan is also one of just 40 coaches in NCAA history to reach the 650-career win plateau. Ryan s career winning percentage of.757 (674-216) is seventh all-time among coaches with 600 career wins. A member of five Halls of Fame, Ryan has been enshrined into the Wilkes College Athletic HOF (2003), the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports HOF (2008), the Pennsylvania Sports HOF (2011), the Wis. Basketball Coaches Assoc. HOF (2011) and the Wis. Intercollegiate Athletic Conference HOF (2012).
