SPORTSMEN S NOTES The Official Publication of the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen s Club July 2006 FIREARMS SALES IN SIGNIFICANT DOWNTURN DMSC SHORT SHOTS The speaker at this month s meeting is Paul Puglia with a program on all facets of personal self-defense. Industry Losses Coincide With Hunting Decline Hunting Future In Jeopardy The June speaker was George Romanoff, president of Ace Sporting Goods in Washington, PA. The store opened in 1947 as Ace Auto Stores, changed emphasis to hunting and fishing and transitioned to Ace Sporting Goods in the early 80 s. Since then, firearms production in the United States has decreased 45%. Of course, George discussed the best buys in pistols, rifles, and ammo. However, his most important message dealt with firearm sales as an indicator of the future of hunting. Ace operates on a small profit margin as it battles the big box stores. But even Gander Mountain (whose loses improved from -$36M to -$23M), Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela were hit hard, while license sales are down 20%. What s behind this phenomenon? George says perhaps we can blame the new quickpace, instant gratification, electronic game, dual-income, single-parent culture. What can we do? He suggests we help organize youthto-youth programs, encourage more woman to join the shooting ranks, get retirees involved in sharing their knowledge with their grandchildren. George is surprised to see so many young married men bring in their arms to sell because their new wives don t like guns. One of our members noted that he told his wife, I ll still be shooting when you leave me! We hope it doesn t have to come to that too often. Future rifle events include Springfield/Bolt, July 30, PA Small Bore Prone Championship August 12-13, (see Shooting Opportunities for details), and Garand Memorial, September 17. The monthly Work-a-ramas continue to help keep the Club in tip-top shape. You can plan ahead to participate by knowing the last work date August 19. An overview of the past two efforts and pictures of some of the workers are on Page Five Plus on the Club website at www.mdi.net/dml. Since we didn t get the names of all the volunteers, if you can help identify the two tree trimmers, we d appreciate it. Let any of the directors know. Thanks. Also on the website are pictures of the smallbore rifle team, official results of the postal league final standings, and the quarterly budget report. Howard Franklin found it necessary to step down from his role as a member of the DMSC Board of Directors, although remaining an active club member. Howard was a stalwart on the board for many years and we will miss his experience and sage advice. Shotgun program manager Doug Gawronski has volunteered to fill Howard s slot, with his installation set for the August board meeting. Thank you Howard. Thank you Doug. THE RECENT NUMBER OF BOATING ACCIDENTS IN THE NEWS REMINDS US ALL TO WEAR THAT LIFE VEST WHEN YOU HIT THE WATER.

WORK-A-RAMA RESULTS The June work party on the got a lot done, even with a light turnout. Gary Scherer and George Taylor installed homosote target backers in the indoor pistol range until they ran out of material (9 out of 10 wasn t bad). You can t believe what stores don t carry homosote. That project will be finished in July. John Tupta brought daughter Sara and son Stephen and with Mark Sorbero, Doug Gawronski, and Gary Weiss got all the bunker weeds cut and raked, much brush cleared, and trimmed around the firing lines on all ranges. In addition, they cleaned up the plinking and lower pistol ranges and dumped the trash bins. July saw the crew size double with George Taylor and Bob Atkison mowing the jungle brought on by the days of rain. Lou Romito, Earl Taylor, and Stephen Tupta attacked the brush behind the 100 yard bunkers on the rifle range. Chuck Augenstein dumped about a dozen loads of fill on the bunker to kill the low brush. Now you ll be able to see the turkey silhouettes at 175 yards. Bee sting survivor Ron Watton got great help on The Tower from Bill Phillip and Bob Kirsopp. Workers were afraid to sit down despite the heat because Bruce Ungar hauled the cut brush, and anything else that didn t move, to the burn pile. Gary Scherer and Doug Gawronski added their labor, as well as the two tree trimmers whose names we failed to get. Great job! Bill Phillips and Bob Kirsopp George Taylor and Earl Taylor (No Relation) August 19 is next! Stephen and John Tupta The Mystery Trimmers
