INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES Game #4, Road Game #4 Indianapolis Indians (2-1) at Columbus Clippers (3-1) Monday, April 9, 2012 -- First Pitch @ 6:35 p.m. EDT Huntington Park -- Columbus, Ohio Indians RHP Charlie Morton (NR) vs. Clippers LHP Chris Seddon (NR) TRIBE TRENDS: Through three games, the Indianapolis Indians rank in the top three in the International League in several offensive categories: First in OPS (.800), second in AVG (.271), SLG (.439), OPB (.361) and doubles (17), tied for second in triples (two) and tied for third in runs (17)... OF Brandon Boggs has hit the Tribe s lone home run thus far... Indians catchers did not strike out in the opening series; Eric Fryer went 3-for-7 with two doubles and two runs in two games and Kris Watts went 1-for-4 with two RBI in one game... Indians pitchers have allowed the fourth-fewest hits in the IL and are tied for the fifth-fewest runs allowed... 32-year-old reliever Doug Slaten picked up the W in the Tribe s first win of the season, pitching 1.1 innings with two hits, one earned run and one strikeout against the Mud Hens on 4/7... Relief pitcher Bryan Morris accomplished a rare feat in the season opener on 4/6 when he recorded four strikeouts in a single inning. TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Charlie Morton (0-0, -.--) takes the hill for the Indians in a major league rehab assignment from the Pittsburgh Pirates... In 29 major league starts in 2011, Morton posted a 10-10 record and a 3.83 ERA for the Pirates... Morton last pitched for the Tribe during a 14-start stint in 2010, when he went 4-4 while also posting a 3.83 ERA... Morton made two starts in Columbus during the 2010 season, taking a loss and a no decision... He pitched a combined 9.1 innings and allowed a total of 16 hits, 12 runs (seven earned) and four walks while recording five strikeouts... Those two starts are the only times he has ever faced the Clippers. TONIGHT S CLIPPERS STARTER: Chris Seddon (0-0, -.--) toes the rubber for Columbus in his first start both of the 2012 season and in the Cleveland Indians organization... Seddon went 9-7 with a 6.27 ERA in 2011 with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in the Seattle Mariners system, appearing in 28 games (25 starts)... Seddon last pitched in the International League during the 2006 season as a member of the Durham Bulls, when he went 9-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 28 starts... Seddon has made two career starts in Columbus, one in 2005 (ND, 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) and one in 2006 (W, 7.2 IP, 11 H, 2 ER, 5 K). TRADE TRIO: When RHP Charlie Morton joins the Indians in a rehab start tonight, it will be the first time that the three trade pieces from the Pirates 2009 trade with the Atlanta Braves will be together on the same roster... In 2009, Morton along with Tribe starter Jeff Locke and OF Gorkys Hernandez were dealt by the Braves to Pittsburgh in exchange for OF Nate McLouth, who just so happens to have signed back with the Pirates prior to the 2012 season. CRASHIN CLEMENT: Indianapolis 1B/DH Jeff Clement is batting.417 over the season s first three games and leads the International League in doubles with four... He is also in a four-way tie (including Columbus INF Matt LaPorta) atop the IL with four extra-base hits... Clement had a single-season career-high 35 doubles in 2007 with Triple-A Tacoma... He is slugging at a.750 rate this season and has scored three runs and driven in one. MERCILESS MERCER: INF Jordy Mercer has posted a.400 batting average in the season s first three games with three doubles, three RBI and one run... He has a.600 slugging percentage and 1.000 on base-plus-slugging... His 4-for-6 performance on 4/7 (2B, 1 RBI, 1 R, 5 TB) helped lead the Indians to their first win of the season. LOTSA LEFTIES: With Seddon s start tonight, the Indians will have faced left-handed starts in each of the season s first four games... The Tribe is currently batting.279 against southpaws with 19 doubles, one triple and 11 RBI... The Indians are led by Mercer, who is batting.556 (5-for-9) versus lefties with three doubles and three RBI... Clement (3-for-6), Fryer (2-for-4) and OF Miles Durham (1-for-2) are all batting.500 against lefties. FACING THE CHAMPS: The Indians are entering their first series of the season against the back-toback Governor s Cup-champion Clippers... Indianapolis was 8-13 against Columbus in 2011 with a team batting average of.259... The Tribe was led by INF Chase d Arnaud, who batted.410 against Columbus in 2011 with nine runs, five doubles, two triple, nine RBI and four stolen bases... Last year s Tribe pitching staff posted a 4.22 ERA against Columbus, racking up 118 strikeouts in 181.1 innings pitched... Current Indians pitchers Brad Lincoln (1-1) and Rudy Owens (1-0) both picked up wins against the Clippers last season.
