INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #94 / Road Game #48 Indianapolis Indians (48-45) at Rochester Red Wings (34-59) Friday, July 16, 2010 -- First Pitch @ 6:05 p.m. EDT Frontier Field -- Rochester, N.Y. Indians LHP Brian Burres (2-3, 4.78 ERA) vs. Red Wings LHP Glen Perkins (3-8, 6.98 ERA) ---- TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Brian Burres, looks to continue his recent string of strong outings when he takes the mound against the Rochester Red Wings this evening... In his last three starts for the Tribe, Burres has posted a 1-1 record and 2.65 ERA (5 ER on 12 hits) in 17.0 innings of work while striking out 13 opposing batters... Impressively, Burres hasn t allowed more than two runs or five hits in any of his last three outings while facing each of the Indians three West Division opponents... Despite pitching well in his last three starts, it wasn t until his most recent outing, a 5.0 IP, two run effort against the Columbus Clippers on July 8, that Burres snapped his personal five-game winless streak... On the statistical side of things, the left-hander has dominated left-handed batters, limiting them to a.171 batting average (7-for-41), while he has allowed right-handed batters to hit at a.270 clip (27-for-100) with 14 of the 16 extra-base hits he s allowed this year as well as 16 of the 20 runs batted in against him this season... Burres has also posted great batting average against splits in several categories this season, holding opposing hitters to a.194 average (7-for-36) when facing the first batter of an inning, a.227 average (22-for-97) with the bases empty, a.172 average (5-for-29) with runners in scoring position and a.200 average (3-for-15) with runners in scoring position with two outs... Burres has also been impressive when he s ahead in the count to opposing batters, holding them to a.078 batting average (4-for-51) as well as when he s behind in the count, as opponents have hit.219 (7-for-32) against him... Burres last squared off against the Red Wings as a member of the Norfolk Tides on April 9, 2007 when he earned a victory after allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Burres in tonight s contest is Red Wings starter Glen Perkins, who faced the Indians for the first time in his career earlier this season on May 10... In his early season outing against the Tribe, Perkins was strapped with his fourth loss of the season after he allowed seven runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work... In his most recent start the left-hander earned his second consecutive win after he allowed one run on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work against the Pawtucket Red Sox... Prior to his back-to-back winning starts, Perkins had allowed six earned runs in each of his last four outings for the Red Wings... The left-hander has also struggled mightily with runners in scoring position (.390 average, 39-for-100) and runners in scoring position with two outs (.364 average, 12-for-33)... Surprisingly, left-handed batters have had more success against the left-handed pitcher this season, hitting at a.328 clip (40-for-122), than right-handers have (.315 average, 76-for-241)... Overall this season, Perkins is 3-8 with a 6.98 ERA (67 ER on 116 hits and 27 walks in 86.1 IP) in 18 starts, while opposing batters have slugged their way to a.320 batting average (116-for-363) with 23 doubles and 14 home runs... Prior to the 2010 campaign, the left-hander had spent parts of the last four seasons with the Twins, turning in an 18-11 record, 4.73 ERA, 145 strikeouts and 74 walks in 67 games (43 starts). LOVIN THE LONG BALL: With his solo home run against the Rochester Red Wings on Thursday, July 15, Tribe OF Jonathan Van Every has now hit a home run in three consecutive contests for the first time since he accomplished the feat from May 13-17, 2005 when he was with Double-A Akron (Ohio)... During his current home run tear, the only hits for Van Every have come via the long ball (3 HR, 3-for-13), but the outfielder has driven in six runs during that span... Interestingly, during his last three game, three home run stretch in 2005, Van Every s only hits were also his three homers (3 HR, 3-for-12) and he collected five total RBI in the process... The last Indians batter to hit a home run in three consecutive contests was the recently re-acquired Brian Bixler, who completed the feat from July 5-7, 2009 (the July 5 contest was game two of a doubleheader). LETS GO STREAKING: Indians OFs Brandon Moss and Alex Presley are currently riding a six-game and a seven-game hitting streak, respectively... During Moss six-game streak, the Georgia native is batting.346 (9-for-26) with five runs scored, two doubles, one home run, five RBI and one stolen base... Presley, who has eclipsed Moss hitting streak by one game, has posted a.400 average (10-for-25) with three runs scored, three doubles, three walks and two stolen bases during his seven-game hitting streak. WELCOME BACK, BIXLER: On January 18, 2010, Indianapolis Indians fan-favorite Brian Bixler was traded to the Cleveland Indians organization for INF/OF Jesus Brito... After being designated for assignment by Cleveland on March 17, Bixler was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on March 19... In 64 games for the Clippers, Bixler batted.278 (64-for-230) with 32 runs scored, 13 doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI before he was re-acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on July 12 for a player to be named later... In his Indianapolis career, Bixler ranks first in runs scored (192), second in games (323) and hits (331), fifth in RBI (130) and 16th in home runs (21) during the Victory Field era... Bixler was also named the Indianapolis Indians MVP in 2007 after posting a.274 batting average (130-for-475) with 23 doubles, five home runs and 51 RBI in 129 games for the Tribe. PATIENCE AT THE PLATE: Following the Tribe s Thursday, July 15 contest against the Rochester Red Wings, Indianapolis batters have drawn an International League-best 372 walks this season... The Tribe s 372 free passes place them 18 ahead of the South Division-leading Durham Bulls, who have drawn 354 base on balls... The Indians are one of only five IL teams to have drawn 300-plus walks this season and have been astoundingly issued at least 100 more base on balls than Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Lehigh Valley, Toledo, Norfolk, Buffalo, Charlotte and Louisville who has a whopping 136 less walks than the Tribe this season. RARING TO GO AGAINST THE RED WINGS: In their five contests against the Rochester Red Wings this season the Indians have hit.282 (48-for-170) with 30 runs scored, 18 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 28 RBI and 24 walks... On the offensive side of things, two current Indians have posted impressive numbers against the Red Wings, as C Luke Carlin has batted.375 (3-for-8) with three runs scored, one double, two RBI and four walks in three games, while INF/OF Kevin Melillo has hit.467 (7-for-15) with three doubles and two RBI in four games... On the mound, three current Tribe relievers LHPs Justin Thomas and Wil Ledezma and RHP Vinnie Chulk have each held Rochester scoreless in their appearances against the North Division squad.
