1 Minnesota State University Moorhead Dance Team 2017-2018 Tryout Information Packet Dear Prospective Member: Thank you for your interest in becoming a dancer at Minnesota State University Moorhead! Serving as a fundamental part of MSUM, the Dragon Dance Team promotes Dragon Pride at numerous events including football, basketball, and soccer games, as well as at numerous other events throughout the school and community. In addition to supporting Dragon Athletics, the team competes each January at the UDA Collegiate National Championship in Orlando, Florida. We are looking for talented, hard working women to be a part of the 2017-2018 Dragon Dance Team. Members of the team are responsible for representing Minnesota State University Moorhead in the classroom, on the field, and on stage at the UDA Collegiate National Championship. Being a member of the dance team comes with many exciting opportunities, but is also a major commitment. We are excited to see you at tryouts! 2 2017-2018 Tryout Information All dancers attending the 2017-2018 Minnesota State University Moorhead Dance Team Tryouts are expected to complete the sessions as required in their entirety. Saturday, April 8th 10-10:30am Registration Nemzek Hall Dance Studio RM#208 10:30-11am Stretch and Warm Up 11-12pm Learn Pom Routine 12-1pm Learn Jazz Routine Break/Lunch 1-3pm Break Audition 3-4pm Stretch, Warm Up, Review Nemzek Hall Dance Studio RM#208 4-5pm Audition 515pm The 2017-2018 MSUM DT Roster will be posted on the door. 515-6pm 2017-2018 MSUM DT Team Meeting NOTE: The 2017-2018 MSUM Dance Team will be announced following the tryout on Saturday, April 8 th. A meeting will follow for the selected team members. LOCATION: All practice sessions will be held in the Nemzek Hall Dance Studio located in Nemzek Hall (649 17 th St S, Moorhead, MN 56560). Please enter through the main doors. The studio is located upstairs in room #208. REQUIRED PAPERWORK: Please mail in prior to tryouts (Attn: MSUM Dance Team, MSUM Athletics, 1104 7 th Ave South, Moorhead, MN 56563) or bring to the first day of tryouts. This fee will be waived for dancers who attend our pre-tryout clinic.) APPEARANCE: Please be aware that this is an important part of the selection process. Dancers should be game ready at all times throughout the weekend. This includes full makeup and hair pulled away from your face.
3 WHAT TO WEAR: Please wear spandex shorts and a bra top for all practice sessions. School colors are recommended but not required. Bring tennis shoes, jazz shoes, and a water bottle. Dancers may wear layers for warm up/stretching. DESIRED TECHNICAL ELEMENTS: Pirouettes (triple, quad +) Al a seconde turns (at least two counts of eight, including pirouettes and changing spots, combination will be taught at tryouts) Leaps/Jumps: Open, calypso, circular disc, switches, toe touch, herkie Flexibility: Leg holds, extensions, needle turns, back scorpion Front and back walkovers Aerials Note: The above skills are desired, not required, elements.
4 2017-2018 MSUM Dance Team Commitment A dancer s responsibility is to perform for all assigned games, university events, community functions, and UDA Collegiate Nationals. It is each member s job to motivate and entertain the crowd. All practices and events are mandatory. Please review the below information for a general guide to the required commitment. All summer, regular season, and winter break practices will be held in Moorhead, MN. SUMMER July 17-21 and 24-28: Practices with emphasis on camp prep, football material, and technique August 3-6: UDA College Camp in Wisconsin Dells (MANDATORY) REGULAR SEASON Practices 3x per week (evenings, usually 3 hours) Workouts 2x per week with team trainer Home football games Campus and community events, fundraising, local dance competitions, appearances Nationals practices over Winter Break UDA Spirit of America competition at Mall of America in Minneapolis, MN UDA Collegiate National Championship in Orlando, Florida (mid-january) ACADEMICS: Members of the Dragon Dance Team will be expected to schedule classes around workouts and practices. Team members are required to maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to remain eligible. EXPENSES: The Dragon Dance Team is funded through Dragon Athletics, fundraising, and personal payments. Dancers are required to actively help coordinate and participate in team fundraisers. A detailed analysis of the team budget and expected payments will be presented at the team meeting following tryouts.
