Bispham Junior Football Festival Sunday 29th August 2010 This year we took 4 teams to the Bispham Junior Football Tournament in Bispham, Blackpool. Our 2 newly formed Under 7s teams for their first taste of a football festival, our Under 9s Reds team and our Under 11s. On a day that started wet and very windy but finished in bright sunshine the Under 7s teams played their first competitive matches for Woodbank F.C. and both teams did the club proud. This was a fantastic introduction for the players and parents to see what junior football is all about and prepare them for the forthcoming season. The under 7s and 8s age groups play non competitive football so no results can be published but the front cover shows the Reds team receiving their medals for attending the festival. The Under 9s, with an almost completely new team and playing together for the first time, started slowly as expected, but improved with every game and in the end just missed out on a semi-final place. The Under 11s, playing for the first time at 11-a-side, equipped themselves very well winning 2, drawing 3 and losing 1 which resulted in them also missing out on a semi-final place by a single point. Well Done to all 4 teams!

Youth Development Unit Every Sunday 9:30 to 10:30 at PlayFootball, Bury College. The whole philosophy behind our Youth Development Unit is to provide a first footballing experience for boys and girls through football activities in a fun, clean and safe environment where parents can relax whilst their children are enjoying themselves. Out aim is to produce skillful, creative and confident footballers who enjoy playing football and interacting with other children. Most children will be involved in football for the rest of their lives and many people remember their early years as the best and most enjoyable. It is therefore important to choose carefully when selecting a club to join. As well as coaching your child in football Woodbank FC aims to provide your child with the opportunity to join a club and play team football for the whole of their childhood and beyond. We use the Youth Development Unit for developing our young coaches by giving them the opportunity to work with and be mentored by our experienced coaches. The children in the Unit will move on to become our new Under 7s each year and we hope that the young coaches will also move forward into management. Woodbank would like to announce that the Youth Development Unit now has its own sponsor, Platinum Blinds of Ramsbottom. Their sponsorship will help the Unit grow and push on to the next level. They are also offering a 5% discount for anyone from Woodbank that purchases a blind and they will donate a further 5% of the sale value to the Unit. Please see their website www.platinumblinds.co.uk for further information. The Unit is always open to new recruits and is now actively trying to recruit Girls in school years 3 & 4 to join with the aim of creating an Under 9s Girls team for the 2011-12 season which starts next September. Membership Details: Under 4s born between 01-Sep-06 and 31-Aug-07 Under 5s born between 01-Sep-05 and 31-Aug-06 Under 6s born between 01-Sep-04 and 31-Aug-05 Girls born between 01-Sep-02 and 31-Aug-03 4 per session. 20 joining fee (Sweatshirt, T-Shirt, Shorts & Socks) Email: youthdevelopment@woodbankfc.com OR Tel: Peter Hickford 07786-655085 for details.

When these plans are realised we will have over 30 teams within the club!

This is your Woodbank Life... This month we are doing a feature on our longest ever serving member of the club - PETER HICKFORD. Peter joined Woodbank in 1994 at the Under 7s age group and started his footballing career as a defender. They played 7-a-side football in the Bury League, before the days of the North Bury Junior League. Here are 2 pictures of his early teams with his managers at the back. On the left at Under 8s and on the right at Under 9s. At Under 10s they didn t have a memorable year and at the end of the season the manager left with Peter s dad, Dennis Hickford, taking on the managers job in addition to managing his other son s (Craig) team. Under 11s (1998/99) was the year the team moved to 11-a-side football and Peter moved into a central midfield position as the team was rebuilt. They had a reasonable season in the league and runners up in the cup, but went to the Easter Festival of Football in Skegness where they won the tournament to put their first piece of silverware on the table. Under 12s (1999/2000) and the team built on their success at the end of the previous season by winning the Premier Division of the Bury & Radcliffe JFL. Peter became captain of the team during this season.

Under 13s (2000/01) and the team achieved their first double success, retaining the Premier Division title and winning the league cup for the first time. The team also went on their first trip to Holland for a week to represent the club in a series of friendly matches. Under 14s (2001/02) and you can see from the photograph and the haircuts that the team is starting to grow up. This could and should have been a treble winning season but were eventually pushed into the runners-up position in the league, lost in the Lancashire County Cup Final after extra time but did retain the league cup with a win over Westbury. After coming so close to the treble the year before the team lost a number of players and a rebuilding job was required. However, the team quickly gelled and won the league and cup double for a second time. Peter also represented the Bury Town team for school where they also won the league. Under 16s (2003/04) and the team decided to try its luck playing Saturday AND Sunday football in 2 different leagues. The result was Premier Division Champions for the 4th time in the Bury & Radcliffe League and League and Cup winners in the Accrington League, thereby giving the team its first treble winning season!

Under 17s (2004/05) and the team, looking for a new challenge, moved to the Bolton Boys Federation league, but to play in their Under 18s section. The result. Another Premier Division League and Cup double and Peter being awarded the League s Player of the Season. He also represented Greater Manchester County at this age group. During his last season playing for Woodbank Peter received his 10 year loyalty award for representing Woodbank and started to move into coaching and completed his Level 1 coaching badge. Peter formed the Woodbank Youth Development Unit and started to coach boys and girls from 6 years old. This allowed Woodbank to form its first Girls team, which is still with Woodbank at Under 16s, and provides the club with its yearly formation of new Under 7s teams. Peter started coaching with Adidas in his spare time and completed his Level 2 coaching award. He then started to manage one of the new Under 7s teams which he still runs and is now representing the club at Under 11s. Peter is now on the committee of Woodbank as Vice-Chairman, he is the Child Welfare Officer and Youth Development Co-Ordinator and is responsible for the development of the Woodbank web site. He is the highest qualified coach within the club. He is our longest serving active member of the club and shows what can be achieved when you commit yourself to a single club. On the playing side, Peter has now moved on to play for and captain Bury Amateur AFC adult team in the Manchester League Premier Division and was a member of the Lancaster University 1st team who achieved a league and cup double last season.

Sponsors Page Woodbank are always looking for sponsors to help the club and individual teams. Here we highlight some of the sponsors for the current season. Apologies for any sponsors missed. If anyone has sponsored a team this season, please tell your manager to pass the details on and we will include you in next months edition. www.platinumblinds.co.uk www.rigbytaylor.com
