About Us Special Olympics Australia is proud to provide regular sports participatio ad quality competitio to people with a itellectual disability of all ages ad abilities. Through mutually-beeficial parterships ad quality sportig pathways we ecourage every participat to have the opportuity ad choice to explore their ow possibility ad ultimately reach their full potetial. Our Missio Our missio is to provide year-roud sports traiig ad athletic competitio i a variety of Olympic-type sports for childre ad adults with a itellectual disability, givig them cotiuig opportuities to develop physical fitess, demostrate courage, experiece joy ad participate i the sharig of gifts, skills ad friedship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes ad the commuity. Our History Special Olympics bega over 40 years ago whe the late Euice Keedy Shriver ivited 75 childre with a itellectual disability ito her ow backyard to explore their talets through sport. This backyard camp has ow grow ito the global Special Olympics movemet, which supports almost 3.5 millio athletes i 170 coutries. Special Olympics bega i Australia i 1976 ad our programs are ow delivered by a dedicated group of voluteers i local commuities across the coutry. I 2011, we offered 14 official sports, plus recreatioal activities ad other lifestyle programs that reflect our holistic approach to athlete well-beig. Our Future Every two hours a Australia child is diagosed with a itellectual disability, which meas we have much work to do to meet the demad for our services. Without your ethusiasm, dedicatio ad passio we would have othig to celebrate, ad I look forward to may future celebratios.
