BrainworX Academy Influential/Positive role models Brandon Lee, Tahriq Caldwell, Kye Hubbart Defense of Mastery Research Report 12/10/18

Research Report Basketball and school are a very big part of life. They both have some very interesting similarities. Some of the greatest players in the world had to go to school everyday just like everyday people and through hard work and maintaining good grades, they were able to be successful. Being successful is possible as long as you set goals, stay focused, and work hard. The significant information/key ideas we discovered in our research were how Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan were huge role models on young adults. Steph Curry was a huge role model because people thought because of his height, he was not going to be the player everyone expected him to be, but he is now one of the best, probably the best three point shooter of all-time and top three Point Guards of all-time. LeBron James is a really huge role model because he is in the debate of being the best basketball player in the world with Michael Jordan Https ://www.forbes.com/sites/leighsteinberg/2018/05/31/5-reasons-why-lebron-is-the-greatest-of -all-time/#493e198c522b and obviously, Michael Jordan is in the debate for being the best basketball player in the world with LeBron James. Some conclusions we made from our research were pretty much forming good habits. Practicing basketball, getting good grades, being organized, having a healthy diet, making good decisions, being a good person, brushing your teeth, etc.

The conclusions impacted our thinking about the content and theme by understanding the importance of hard work, doing your homework, and making good decisions. We wanted to make sure that the content and the theme gave that message. Through research, I learned that LeBron and Stephen Curry were born in the same hospital. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2481272-steph-curry-lebron-james-were-coincidental ly-born-at-the-same-hospital-in-ohio What are the odds that two hard working superstars who fought and worked hard to get to the NBA, were born in the same hospital. Also, LeBron James mother, Gloria James gave birth to him at the age of 16. https://cavsnation.com/lebron-james-uses-childhood-motivatioin/ Although, his mother was a team mom, he showed that through hard work and dedication you can still make it to whatever it is you virtue in life. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team three times, but he began to work even harder and harder and later on becoming the greatest basketball player of all-time. newsfeed..com/2012/01/16/a-myth-debunked-was-michael-jordan-really-cut-from-his-high-scho ol-team/ time The points of view were LeBron James who s mom was a team mother, and Stephen Curry who s father who played in the NBA. Although they lived different lives and had different childhoods where one grew up poor which was LeBron James and one grew up rich which was

Stephen Curry, that just goes to show you that hard work and dedication, getting good grades, etc. has a huge affect in your in life. In conclusion, Players like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Steph Curry. Influence kids and teenagers by their cultural influence, their resilience, and being positive role model. Without these big influential players like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Steph Curry most kids and teenagers could struggle to strive for a greater life. Evaluating Sources When doing research we found some sources that had very valuable information. And some sources that weren t that revlavent. Some sources that we decided not to use were https://www.sportskeeda.com/.../michael-jordan-stats-5-untouchable-feats-of-his-airne (poor) This source just simply didn t have the information that we needed. I was looking for Michael Jordan's stat line and career stat line and this source just simply didn t work. Another source that didn t work out was https://prezi.com/v1g2kuocskmf/biology-and-basketball/ (poor) source was a prezi presentation and we didn t find it helpful at all so we decided to find another source. One source that we found very helpful for the math was https://stats.nba.com/ (Effective) on this source you could look up any players stats any they all came up accurately. All the information that we needed was here this was a very useful source. Another useful source that we found was

://www.forbes.com/sites/leighsteinberg/2018/05/31/5-reasons-why-lebron-is-the-greatest -of-all-time/#493e198c522b (Effective) This source provided good information. It was strong and it gave specific points on comparing the players stats and who really had the overall best season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tltqpyb3pwg (Moderate) this was a youtube link that I found on an interview with Steph Curry. It showed me how he acted and what his mindset was during the season. But I wish this interview was longer and it went more in depth. https://www.fastcompany.com/.../nba-games-are-now-being-filmed-at-separate-angles (Effective) This source got to show us the different camera angles in NBA games. It didn t just show us the certain camera angles it showed us new camera angles and the most common camera angles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk_ebnlyqxw (Moderate) this source was a moderate one it showed us what was going through Lebron James mind after game 1 of the NBA finals. It showed us his frustration but I wish it was longer and showed replays of the game. So by these sources I found the youtube ones pretty useful but I also found some of the reading sources useful to because of all the information it provided. There was lot s of sources that we found effective and lot s that we just didn t care for whether they had poor information or inaccurate information.

Content Connections When a ball bounces, potential energy converts to kinetic energy and then back to potential energy. However, when coming back up after the bounce, the law of conservation of energy means the ball loses energy, causing it not to bounce back as high as it started. As a player pushes a ball back down again, energy is restored to the ball. It involves Newton s third Law. www.reference.com/sports-active-lifestyle/basketball-related-science-8a6bceba432615d3 Obviuosly, when you shoot it involves force and gravity. While shooting, if you shoot to short, it will come up short. If you shoot to far, it will go to far. But with the right amount of force, you will make a perfect shot. The last one is performing a layup. When you perform a layup, it involves using acceleration and momentum. Players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Michael Jordan all use these things when they play. Stephen Curry being the three point shooter he today uses shooting with the right amount of force when he shoots. LeBron James being gifted with his great athleticism uses acceleration and momentum when he goes up for dunks and layups. Same goes for Michael Jordan. This shows that bad shooters, mainly being big men, PF/C s (Power Forward) (Center), don t use enough or use too much strength when they shoot. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Michael jordan all had positive role models in their lives. Same with Romeo and Juliet. Some positive role models in LeBron James s life were players like Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant. Another person LeBron James looked up too growing up was famous actor, Denzel Washington. LeBron James did not take

anything from Allen Iverson, but he really liked the way he played at the height he was. He even said I'll watch tapes of AI, too. I don't take anything from AI. Well, I do -- his will. They say he was 6 feet, but AI was like 5-10½. Do we even want to say 160? 170 [pounds]? Do we even want to give him that much weight? And he played like a 6-8 2-guard. He was one of the greatest finishers we've ever seen. You could never question his heart. Ever. He gave it his all. AI was like my second-favorite player growing up, after MJ." He also said "MJ wasn't perfect. MJ had bad games. He had turnovers. He had games where he felt like he should've been better," James said. "But I think the greatest thing about MJ was that he never was afraid to fail. And I think that's why he succeeded so much -- because he was never afraid of what anybody ever said about him. Never afraid to miss the game-winning shot, never afraid to turn the ball over. Never afraid." Through research, I could not find out who Stephen Curry s role models were, but I do know that Stephen Curry is a huge believer in Christianity. When I think of Stephen Curry s role model, I think of God. On his shoes, it says I can do all things. Stephen Curry believes he can do anything and everything through christ. Michael Jordan s role model was his brother. Larry Jordan. Larry Jordan would always beat his brother Michael Jordan in basketball when they were younger, and the only accomplishment Jordan wanted was to beat his brother, and one day he did. LeBron James has inspired young adults and teenagers with his great athleticism. LeBron James is a great player because he could pretty much do anything on the court. He has great playmaking, great finishing, a good three point shooter, a great rebounder, a great blocker, a great leader, etc. The only thing LeBron needs to work on is his free throws. He is known for

complaining, and I don t blame him because he gets fouled so much but since he is so big, they never call fouls for him. Stephen Curry is a great role model due to his lethal three point shooting. Stephen Curry is one of the best, if not, the best three point shooter alive. Not only can he shoot, he is amazing at the free throw line, one of LeBron s weaknesses, he is a great attacker/finisher, he has outstanding handles and great playmaking. One thing I would say Stephen Curry needs to work on is his defense. He needs to be able to guard players like Kyrie Irving who is much faster, has crazy handles, and is one of the best finishers in the league. Michael Jordan s only flaw was the ability to shoot threes. Without a doubt, Michael Jordan would be the best player in the world and much better than LeBron James if he had the ability to shoot. Everything else, MJ has mastered, the ability to shoot mid-range shots, attack the basket, get steals, play defense, shoot free throws, etc. Romeo and Juliet is just like this. They each had positive role models in their lives. A good example of a good positive role model is Friar Lawrence, and a good example of a good leader is Prince of Verona.

The NBA keeps track of players stats every year. No matter the player of how bad or how good they are. They keep stats such as points, rebounds, assists, steals, turnovers, free throw percentage etc. If your a very a good player you ll have very high stats which represents that your having a good season. During Michael Jordan s outbreaking season in 1987 and 1988 he averaged 35 points a game, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 3.2 steals. These are very good stats and people recognize these. If people recognize these types of stats then that player will usually get a lot of attention from fans, the media, and the league. When having such an outbreaking season like Michael Jordan kids can pick up on this either watching TV or hearing about it. When a kid hears what Michael Jordan is doing they then can become influenced by this or inspired. LeBron James has had many good seasons throughout his career. Some consider one season greater than the other. In the 2017-2018 season LeBron James had an outstanding season he averaged 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 9.1 assists. For having the team that he was on he still managed to put up these numbers consistently. These types of stats that LeBron had over this past season were crazy. This began to show kids that their 33 year old superstar is still putting up big numbers. This showed many kids that it doesn t matter what team your on you still have to go out their and compete. Stephen Curry had one of the greatest seasons anyone have seen, he changed the game. He put up some crazy stats 30.1 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 2.1 steals. He led the league in three pointers made and three point attempts. Stephen Curry has influenced so many kids and he still does. His impressive shooting does just this.

To find out all these averages and statistics I used something called Standard Deviation. Standard Deviation helped me find all the averages of their statistics like points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Standard Deviation takes you through all the steps to find the exact average. As we know some interviews can get pretty tight. We have seen this with Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry. Every night these players are interviewed after their games. Some reporters can ask stupid, sarcastic and obvious questions. This can sometimes frustrate the players and they have to do their best to keep calm and not act out. This is what some reporters can want them to do. Out of the three Lebron James can be the most moody or sarcastic to some reporters who act this way. During one of his interviews the reporter repeatedly asked Lebron. So what was going through JR Smith's mind during that play? This was a question that was asked to Lebron regarding a very poor play one of his teammates did during the finals. I m not sure what he was thinking. Reporter well did he say anything in the locker room? Lebron No he didn t. Reporter Well what do you really think was going through his mind? Lebron I m not sure you should ask him that. Reporter Did he say anything specific to you? Lebron then leaves the room. As we can see this reporter was being inappropriate towards Lebron. And Lebron in my opinion did the best thing and just left the room. As we can see it s not that easy being a basketball player. You have to deal with different reporters which can lead to frustration. But these certain interviews don t stop Lebron James he uses his reliencey to push through and perform every night.

The same thing goes for Steph Curry he hasn t as bad interviews like Lebron but he s had some. Steph s interviews are usually about his injuries. Steph is a great player and when he s injured it s always his ankle. Steph uses his resilience to keep playing or do the best he can to recuperate and keep playing. Steph how s your ankle doing? When will you back? Has it gotten worse? These types of questions are asked all the time by interviewers. Steph always answers the best he can. I m doing the best I can to recuperate and get straight back on the court to play with my team. Stephen Curry has had numerous injuries throughout his career but look at him. He is still influencing players by his resilience to keep playing and not give up. Players health is vital to them and often it comes first. Usually during an injury or interview stress and frustration can occur. Steph, Lebron, and Michael have all dealt with this before. There mental health determines how they play. If their mad or frustrated they may not play good but if their happy and focused then they will likely play good. Kids and young adults pick up on this if they see Lebron, Michael, or Steph playing through an injury it shows their toughness and their resilience. These little things inspire kids every day to keep playing basketball and play through challenges or obstacles. Players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Michael Jordan all have mixtapes and highlight reels. There are all types of different filming angles during live NBA games. Most of the time a player scores, the camera angle switches from the full court angle to the players angle. LeBron, Curry, and Jordan all have highlight reels and each one of those highlight reels encourages and inspires other people that love the game of Basketball. When Curry hits a clutch three pointer to win the game, the camera angle switches to a full court angle showing the crowd

going wild and then switching to a player camera angle showing the players celebration. LeBron has made multiple buzzer beaters and dunks. During these dunks and buzzer beaters, people turn these live NBA game actions into highlight reels on youtube and may add music to hype the video up more. We think this really inspires kids to one day become NBA players and be on youtube and on live TV. Along with Stephen Curry and LeBron James, Michael Jordan also had highlight reels and was on live TV. We say mostly the camera is focused on him because he was the star player and the main player to focus on on the court. The history of immigration to the United States details the movement of people to the United States starting with the first European settlements from around 1600. Beginning around this time, British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. Later Africans were imported as slaves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/history_of_immigration_to_the_united_states Players like Joel Embiid, Kyrie Irving, and Patrick Ewing are all from different countries, and. They all were inspired by players like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry. Joel Embiid immigrated from Cameroon, Kyrie Irving immigrated from Australia, and Patrick Ewing immigrated from Kingston Jamaica. These Immigrants had to fight their way to the NBA and try become better the best in the NBA. We think players that come from different countries are one of the better breeds. We feel like they are one of the most committed people to training. Conclusions

The consequences of our research and findings are that if we had not conducted any research we would not have found the many ways that each subject (math, english, etc) relate to basketball. This research has showed us how each topic correlates and the history behind it. We pretty much conducted all of the research needed in the theme. For some topics, we didn t know what to really draw. We overcame this by researching and communicating with one another. Reflection Throughout our researching, we looked for basketball related links that would help us conduct our research. If we were looking for interviews or any videos that would help us, we used Youtube. If the resources had a link that included what we were looking for we would click that link. Usually the top three to five resources that came up first we would check out. Some things that our group needs to work on when conducting our research is being more patient. Instead of hurrying to find what we re looking for, we could take our time and find the best source. When you find a good source that you understand it s easy then to write what your read or learned. To improve our mastery next time we should check with teachers to make sure that we're doing everything right. And then we should start on our research report when it s assigned instead of waiting til the final week. These two things can be important in getting a good grade on our research report. So next time we should utilize these things.
