JEFFERSON VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2016 COUNTY 4-H NEWS Inside this issue: County Food Show Our annual County Food Show was held on December 5, 2015 at the Extension office. We had 9 Clover Kids and 53 4- Her s submit entries this year. A big THANKS to all our judges for their time. Also, thanks to our Club Managers, Project Leaders and parents for making our event a successful one, especially Mikayla Mewa and friends for putting bags together. Clubs Corner.. Youth Council Christmas meeting Important: remember attending your club meetings is an important part of your 4-H membership. If you miss 2 or more consecutive meetings, you are ineligible to participate in any county or district event including the South Texas State Fair. The next Adult Leaders meeting will be held on January 19th, 6:30 p.m. All club managers, parents and project leaders are encouraged to attend. These meetings are held 4 times a year in which to discuss upcoming contests themes, funding opportunities, etc. District Community Service Do you have any gently used ipods you no longer need or use? Our District-wide service project will be collecting digital audio systems to donate to...music and Memory a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirmed through digital technology. You can donate your original CD s, gently used ipods & MP3 players or purchase a new one, that will go directly to residents in a Music & Memory Certified Nursing Home, College Street Health Care Center and The Oaks here in Beaumont. Hamshire-Fannett 4- H club collected gifts for Buckner s Children s Village. They sent 30 gifts to Buckner s. R.E.A.C.H. 4-H Club We collected canned goods for Some Other Place and 3 hours helping them sort and prepare for their Thanksgiving food bags. In December they made goodie bags for 3 nursing homes. While there they sang Christmas Carols and delivered stockings to nursing homes put together by Some Other Place. Amelia 4-H Collected dog and cat food for Paws. Lonestar 4-H made blankets for the Linus Project and collected toys for Shepherds Inn. Mid-County 4-H collected toys for the Blue Santa program. Lucky Clover 4-H collected toys for the Toys for Tots Drive and coats for the homeless. They also toured the Beavers Christmas Tree Farm where they learned about the trees. 4-Her s in the News Congratulations to Elsie Morris Thomas for being selected Westbrook for getting a hard Congratulations to Savannah to be a 2015-16 Texas 4-H luck calf at the Heart O Texas Fair and Shooting Sports Ambassador. 2016 South Texas State Fair The South Texas State Fair will be held on March 24-April 3, 2016. Here is a list of important dates, etc: NEW: All steers must be dehorned before the start of the fair s weigh-in. Roaster pickup January 6, 2016 (YMBL office) Broiler pickup February 10, 2016 (Ford Park) Rabbit entry deadline February 2, 2016 Breeding Beef entry deadline February 2, 2016 All poultry pickup will be from 4-6 p.m.; bring a box when you pickup your birds. New: Weight change on swine: 240-280, plus or minus 10. Over weight or under weight will be disqualified. Fair book with rules and guidelines is available on-line, ww.ymbl.org. If you need any more information, please call the 4-H office, 409-835-8461. County Roundup Our County Roundup will be held on January 15, 2016 at the Extension of ice, beginning with registration at 6:00 and contests starting at 6:30 p.m. This event showcases the many talents of our 4-H ers. In the Share-the-Fun contests there are 7 categories: Poetry/Prose, Vocal, Choreographed Routines, Celebrate 4-H, Solo or Band Performance and Musical/ Instrumental and Dramedy. Categories in Educational Presentations are: Beef, Clothing & Textiles, Companion Animals, Health, Horse, Open, Ag & Natural Resources (Agronomy, Meat Science, Horticulture, Shooting Sports), Family & Consumer Sciences (Food & Nutrition, Consumer Life Skills, Housing and Home Environment), Promote 4- H, Public Speaking, Safety & Injury Prevention and Sheep and/or Goats. You may get copies of the rules from the Extension of ice. We are also in need of judges for this and all our County events. Entries are due by January 4, 2016. Please call for an entry form, if you have any questions or need more information, 409-835- 8461. Annual 4-H Lock-in The Jefferson County Youth Council will host it s annual lock-in on February 5th at the Extension office. Check in will begin from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and conclude around 11 p.m. Please RSVP by February 1st so we can have a head count. Also, bring your favorite snack to share. Project Updates Vet Science This project will begin in February and run approximately 6 8 weeks. If you are interested, please RSVP by January 25th, 409-835-8461. Horse Project The next two meetings are: January 17, 3-4 p.m. and February 7th, 2:30-3:30 with an optional 30 minutes to ride or riding lesson, held at the Tyrrell Park Stables in Beaumont.
