2 / RANDWICK ROUND UP RANDWICK ROUND UP Day one of The Championships at Randwick certainly didn t disappoint and horses by WS stallions did their sires proud in a number of top races. Part-owner Ruper Legh (left) with Glen Boss after Brutal s win BRUTAL (O REILLY) WINNER OF THE G1 DONCASTER HANDICAP O Reilly s son Brutal carried Glenn Boss to a seventh victory in the Gr.1 Doncaster Handicap at Randwick on Saturday. Brutal s iconic win provided his late sire O Reilly with his 14th individual Group One winner and his second Doncaster Handicap winner, with the other being resident Waikato Stud stallion Sacred Falls. The win tipped his earnings to $2.29 million and the lightly raced entire has now won four of his seven race starts, including three Stakes races. IN THE OWNERSHIP The WS team had the privilege of hosting Brutal s part owners Rupert and Cheryl Legh at the farm last week and we would all like to say a special congratulations for the win! Congratulations to Brutal s owners: R & C Legh Racing (Mgr: R P Legh), Pulitano Thoroughbreds (Mgr: G Pulitano), B & C Thoroughbreds (Mgr: B A Dorman), S J & Mrs D L Bates, H J Chapman, Mrs J S Willis, D V Russo & Gurners Bloodstock (Mgr: M Ramsden) Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes Continued on page 3 >

3 / RANDWICK ROUND UP RANDWICK ROUND UP (CONT D) The Group 1 Australian Derby as always, attracted a topline up of gallopers. WS-home breds Madison County and Surely Sacred secured second and third respectively and the fourth spot went to gallant Savabeel colt The Chosen One who was forced to go back in the run from a wide barrier but charged home late. MADISON COUNTY (PINS) 2ND G1 AUSTRALIAN DERBY SURELY SACRED (ROCK N POP) 3RD G1 AUSTRALIAN DERBY THE CHOSEN ONE (SAVABEEL) 4TH G1 AUSTRALIAN DERBY WS-bred Pins gelding Madison County has proven he has a heart of gold, and when it comes to racing, he puts in his best effort every time he steps out. Claiming the runner-up spot in the Australian Derby, Madison County has enjoyed a top Sydney campaign where he placed in all three starts (Group 1 Australian Derby, Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and Group 1 Randwick Guineas). Before heading to Australia he won four races, including two Group 1 s. Congratulations to Madison County s owners: China Horse Club Racing Pty Ltd Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman Ultra consistent WS-bred Rock n Pop gelding Surely Sacred has enjoyed a top three-year-old season and has not been out of the money in all eight starts. His biggest wins have come in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas and Group 2 Auckland Guineas before he ventured to Sydney where he was third in Saturday s Australian Derby and fourth in the Rosehill Guineas at his previous start. Congratulations to Surely Sacred s owners: Raffles Thoroughbred Racing (Mgr: K T Yap) TRAINER Tony Pike After electing to pass him in at the 2017 Karaka Yearling Sale when he failed to meet his reserve, The Chosen One s breeders / co-owners have been rewarded for backing their own judgment with two Stakes wins this season and a very admirable fourth in the Australian Derby. Congratulations to The Chosen One s owners: R L Bonnington, A G, C P, G, K J, Mrs P A & P R Dennis, Miss J L Dunlop, D G Forde, P M Jeffares, P Johnstone, G R Miller, G J Popham, G R Redington, T V Rider, Mrs N C Robertson & N van Schaik Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman

4 / GROUP 1 SAVABEEL QUINELLA GROUP 1 SAVABEEL QUINELLA Back in New Zealand, the best fillies and mares in the country fought it out in the Group 1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes. NICOLETTA (SAVABEEL) WINNER OF THE G1 NZ TB BREEDERS STAKES Multiple Group winning Savabeel mare Nicoletta got the better of her opponents and was strong to the line to take out the Group 1 $200,000 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes At Te Aroha on Saturday. Close behind her was Sir Peter Vela s Savabeel mare Supera who helped provide her sire with a Group 1 quinella. OWNER Congratulations to Nicoletta s owner: Lib Petagna (JML Bloodstock) Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman BELOW / Nicoletta winning the Breeders Stakes Photo credit: Race Images Photos

5 / HONG KONG HERO HONG KONG HERO Proving that Savabeel s success is felt in Asia too, Rattan topped off an excellent weekend for his champion sire by winning the Group 2 The Sprint Cup at Sha Tin. RATTAN (SAVABEEL) WINNER OF THE G2 THE SPRINT CUP The five-year-old son of Savabeel has been competitive at the top level in Hong Kong through the more recent part of his career and was able to claim Group glory in last nights Group 2 The Sprint Cup at Sha Tin. In doing so, he became Savabeel s 89th individual Stakes winner and his 18th Stakes winner this season.
