One of the offensive masters of collegiate football, Fassel instructed his quarterbacks to fill the air with footballs and have they ever! As initiator and director of the highly complex Ute offense, all three of Fassel's teams have ranked among the nation's leaders in passing offense. Last year, Fassel propelled an injury plagued team to a 5-7 overall record. Despite calling the signals behind a makeshift offensive line, Fassel's quarterbacks engineered Utah to a third place national standing in passing offense and a 12th-place finish in total offense. His 1987 Utes set 13 school records. In 1986, Utah ranked fourth nationally in passing and eighth in total offense. Since assuming the head post, Fassel's teams have set or tied a combined 50 school and WAC records and 10 NCAA marks. Despite his teams' record-shattering performances and the spectator enthusiasm they've generated, Fassel knows well the pendulum ride of major college football. After steering his first club to an 8-4 record in 1985, Fassel's second-year squad nosedived to 2-9. With 1987's team fashioning a respectable 5-7 mark, it appears the pendulum is swinging back in Fassel's favor. As Utah's coach, he has earned a reputation among his peers on a regional and national level. He is district chairman of the All-American Selection Committee. Fassel is also on the College Football Association (CFA) board of coaches, and the WAC Officiating Committee. Given Fassel's background, establishing a winning tradition at Utah seems only natural. Since joining the coaching ranks in the mid '70s, Fassel has learned from veteran mentors like former collegiate and professional coach John Ralston. But Fassel's reputation as a quarterback coach stands on its own merits. While an assistant at Stanford (1979-83), Fassel gained the opportunity to coach some of the top quarterbacks in the country. Under Fassel's guidance, John Elway emerged as the nation's premier collegiate quarterback earning All-America and Pac-10 player-of-the-year honors. Elway, the first player taken in the 1983 NFL draft, recognizes Fassel's contributions to his career. "1 owe a lot to Coach Fassel, because he took me straight out of high school as a raw kid trying to learn how to be a collegiate player. He is, in my opinion, the best teacher of fundamentals I've been around," praises Elway. "I have retained just about all that Coach Fassel taught me at Stanford. He not only helped me in my transition from high school to college, but it carried over into my professional career as well." Other Fassel protegees who jumped to the pros include Turk Schonert and Steve DeBerg. Fassel's road to collegiate coaching success actually began in Salt Lake City, where as Utah's quarterback coach in 1976, he coached Dan Hagemann to a second-place WAC standing in both passing and total offense. In 1977, Fassel moved up the road to Weber State for a position as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. At Weber, he coached Morris Bledsoe, who finished fifth in the nation (Div. 11) in passing and fourth in total offense. As a Division 1AA quarterback in 1978, Bledsoe achieved national rankings of second and fourth, respectively, in passing and total offense. The following year, Fassel joined the Stanford football staff where he remained until 1984, when he accepted the offensive coordinator's post for the Portland Breakers of the USFL. He was named head Utah football coach in 1985. Fassel continued his coaching wizardry at Utah tutoring quarterback Larry Egger to nearly every school passing and total offense mark. Last year, Chris Mendonca and Scott Mitchell ranked in the WAC's top-10 in total offense and passing efficiency. Before getting the call to coach, Fassel enjoyed a colorful playing career. A native of Anaheim, Calif., Fassel quarterbacked his Anaheim High team to the C1F finals. His next stop was Fullerton Junior College, where he led his team to a 25-1 two-year record and directed the nation's No. 1 junior college offense. His 1967 Fullerton JC team captured the national junior college championship capping an undefeated season. From there, Fassel moved to Southern Cal, where he played on the Trojans' 1969 Pac-Eight championship team and in their 1970 Rose Bowl victory over Michigan. He concluded his collegiate career in 1971 at Cal State-Long Beach, where he helped the 49ers to the PCAA grid title. Fassel was the fourth quarterback taken in the 1972 NFL draft - going to the Chicago Bears. He also spent time with the San Diego Chargers and Houston Oilers, before closing his playing career. Fassel, 39, graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education from Long Beach State in 1972. He and his wife Kitty are the parents of four children: John (14), Brian (12), Jana (10) and Michael (7). ^IsIslUG JACK REILIY Offensive Coordinator/ Quarterbacks When Jim Fassel accepted the head coaching post at Utah four years ago, one of his first moves was to lure offensive coordinator Jack Reilly into the Ute fold. Reilly, one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game today, helped Fassel originate and implement Utah's unique and wildly popular 'Duck' offense in 1987. The pair dreamed up the various 'duck' schemes to combat a shortage of healthy bodies on the offensive line. Reilly, a driving force behind Utah's conference and national offensive rankings over the past three years, coached three All-America junior college quarterbacks, before jumping to Division I. The 41-year-old Reilly came to the Utes via El Camino Junior College in California bringing All-America juco quarterback Larry Egger with him. Egger proceeded to break nearly all of the Utes' existing total offense and passing records. Yet another Reilly product to make the trip from El Camino to Utah was All-America JC receiver Loren Richey. Richey holds most of the Utah season and career marks. Reilly coached at El Camino for five years; the last three as head coach. In addition to Egger, he directed Tod Hons (a 1980 Reilly disciple, who became a twoyear starter at Arizona State) and 1982 Southern Cal All-America quarterback Tim Green. Green steered USC to the 1985 Rose Bowl, where he was tabbed player-of-the-game. Before joining the El Camino staff, Reilly coached for 12 years at Los Angeles' Beverly Hills High School. The head coach five of those seasons, Reilly led his team to a pair of conference championships. A native of Boston, Mass., Reilly moved to California in 1963 and attended Culver City High. In 1964, Reilly played at Washington State, before returning to California and playing for Santa Monica City College as a sophomore. He spent his final two seasons at Cal State-Long Beach, where he quarterbacked the 49ers to a 9-1 record and a second-place standing among the nation's small colleges in 1965. Twice named to the all-conference team, Reilly earned second-team All-America honors in 1965 - the year his 49er team topped the nation in total offense. Reilly graduated from Cal State-Long Beach in 1967, with a bachelor's degree in physical education and speech. In 1978, Reilly received his master's degree in education from Azusu Pacific. Reilly and his wife Wendy are the parents of three children Chris, Corrie and Katie. He is an avid fly fisherman. TOM GADD Defensive Coordinator/ Linebackers Tom Gadd returned to the Ute coaching staff last year, only to find a once proud defensive unit in shambles. Gadd, who was Utah's defensive coordinator from 1977-82, is back in Salt Lake City after a four-year layover at South Carolina. As Utah's 'second time around' defensive coordinator, Gadd spent most of last year juggling an injury-plagued lineup in search of the elusive 'right' combination. Gadd's first step after the 1987 season was to bulk up his defensive corps. He succeeded, as 19 of Utah's recruits will vie for time in the trenches. No one doubts that Gadd will turn around Utah's struggling defense; his past experience at South Carolina and Utah proves that. During Gadd's four seasons at South Carolina, his 'Fire Ant' defense received great acclaim. At one point in the 1984 season, it was ranked second in the nation. Gadd also fielded some outstanding defensive teams during his first tenure at Utah. His defensive units twice led the Western Athletic Conference in total defense (1978 and 1982) and in 1978 and '81, Utah was the top WAC team against the run. The 1981 squad also finished eighth nationally in rushing defense. Prior to joining the Ute staff in 1977, Gadd spent three years as Wayne Howard's understudy at Cal State-Long Beach. Two of Gadd's 49er teams were ranked nationally (9th and 16th) in total defense. When Howard moved to Utah, he took Gadd with him. Gadd began his coaching career as freshmen coach at Cal-Riverside. After two seasons, he advanced to the varsity, where he coached the linebackers for two years, before moving to Long Beach. A native of San Diego, Gadd graduated from Cal- Riverside in 1969, with a bachelor's degree in history. He played linebacker at UCR and was named the team's Most Inspirational Player. Prior to his career at UCR, Gadd played for San Diego City College. As a prep, he led the Kearny High team to back-to-back C1F championships (1963 and 1964). The 40-year-old Gadd and his wife Carol are the parents of two sons Danny and Jeffrey. SEAN MCNABB Tight Ends/ Special Teams Sean McNabb, the dean of Utah's football coaching staff, is in his 12th year at the 'U'. Versatility and success are the main reasons behind McNabb's lengthy stay. Now in his fourth year as coach of the tight ends and U-backs, McNabb spent his first eight years directing the Ute running backs. All three of McNabb's disciplines have flourished during his 11-year stay. Last year, McNabb tutored tight end Curt Jones to a second-place WAC standing in receiving and put his second outstanding kicker in as many years on the field in Scott Lieber. Lieber, who tied his predecessor Andre Guardi in PAT conversion percentage (100%, 23-23), was among the nation's leaders in field goal percentage (93.3%, 14-15). McNabb began his coaching career in 1972, when he assisted former Ute football coach Wayne Howard at California-Riverside. McNabb, who would spend 10 years as Howard's assistant, moved with him to Cal State-Long Beach for three years, before journeying to Salt Lake. McNabb was born in Maryland, but spent most of his youth in Southern California. After graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1968, McNabb enrolled at Notre Dame, where he spent two years. He then transferred to Cal-Riverside where he played both offensive and defensive line for two years. Upon graduating with honors from UCR with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1972, McNabb embarked upon his coaching career. 9iv

Considered an expert on the kicking game, he is frequently consulted in that area. WAYNE MCQUIVEY Offensive Backs In his fourth year as offensive backs' coach, Wayne McQuivey looks to keep Utah's growing reputation for outstanding runners intact. When his crew lost All- America candidate Eddie Johnson to a knee injury early last season, McQuivey unveiled outstanding fullback Martell Black and running back Clifton Smith. Black and Smith finished 11th and 14th, respectively, in the WAC rushing statistics. McQuivey regains Johnson's help this fall, when the all-wac back returns for his senior season. Utah enlisted McQuivey from the world of private business, where he owned and operated Downeta Hot Springs in Downey, Idaho. His previous coaching experience includes stints at Weber State, Utah and Marsh Valley High School in Arimo, Idaho. McQuivey was the offensive back coach at Weber State in 1977 and the Wildcats' defensive line coach in 1978. While at Weber, McQuivey recruited Danny Rich, Tom Brothers and Roger Ruzek all of whom are now playing in the professional ranks. Before taking the Weber post, McQuivey served as junior varsity coach at Utah for three seasons and offensive back coach for one year. His resume contains one year as assistant coach at Marsh High School and head coach at Marsh Valley Middle School. McQuivey played one year of football at Utah State. He later transferred to Utah, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1974, with a bachelor's degree in physical education. The 41-year-old McQuivey and his wife Camille are the parents of four children Shayne, Tami, Ross and Dustin. DAVE KOTULSKI Defensive Ends One of the veterans of the Ute staff, Dave 'Koto' Kotulski begins his second decade at the 'U' this fall. Seven of those 10 seasons were spent coaching the defensive line, two were spent as linebacker coach and he is currently in his second year with the defensive ends. During his career as a Ute coach (in which he has served under three different head coaches), 'Koto' has produced many great defenders, including former Miami Dolphins' player Steve Clark and former all-wac selection Mark Blosch. Among Kotulski's recruiting coups at Utah were Erroll Tucker, Darren Hughes, Bryan Bero and Curt Jones. Tucker and Clark were both All-America picks. Kotulski joined the Utes directly from the prep coaching ranks, where he spent three highly successful years at St. Paul High in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. From 1975-77, St. Paul captured the Angeles League Championship. Kotulski's St. Paul club placed second in the CIF twice and posted a 35-4 three-year record. Kotulski also made coaching stops at Carlsbad High School in New Mexico and St. Cletus Grammar School in LaGrange, 111. Koto's collegiate playing days began at Morton Junior College, where he was a two-year all-conference choice as a center/middle linebacker, and Morton's 1971 MVP and captain. He then moved to New Mexico State earning two letters and graduating in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. A native of Summit, 111., Kotulski was an all- Chicago Catholic League selection as a middle guard at Fenwick High. Kotulski and his wife Cissy are the parents of a son - David John. They are expecting a second child in August. FRED GRAVES Receivers Seventh-year Ute grid coach Fred Graves sports an impressive list of great receivers. Graves, who coached wide receiver Carl Harry to a fourth-place WAC standing (63 receptions) last year, is a vital part of Utah's high powered offensive game plan. In 1986, Graves coached Ute season and career reception record holder Loren Richey, who went on to sign an NFL contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Graves was no stranger to the Ute program, before joining the coaching staff. As an undergraduate, he played halfback and split end for the Utes, from 1968-71. He started at halfback in 1969 and 1970, before moving into a starting role at split end in 1971. His senior year, he led the team in receptions, with 45. Upon graduation, Graves played part of a season with the Chicago Bears of the NFL, and also played for the California Sun of the World Football League. Graves began his coaching career at his prep alma mater, Verbum Del High School in Los Angeles. In 1975, he trekked to Northeast Missouri, where he coached for two seasons. He later coached at Western Illinois, before moving to New Mexico State in 1979. Graves was an assistant Aggie coach for three years, before coming to Utah in 1982. Graves, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from Utah in 1971, and his wife Queen have three children Dawnyell, Amber and Joseph. In 1986, the Cyclone defense ranked 28th in the nation and two of Proctor's defensive linemen were selected in the NFL draft. Prior to his coaching stint at Ames, Iowa, Proctor coached at San Diego State for five years (1981-85), Two of his SDSU defensive linemen were drafted by the NFL in the first three rounds. Doug Reed is now a starter for the Rams, while Sean McNanie starts for the Buffalo Bills. Proctor made a number of stops en route to Utah. He served as defensive line coach for two years at East Tennessee State and was head football coach and athletic director at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C. for three years. His collegiate coaching experience also includes three seasons as defensive coordinator at Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, N.C. and one year as defensive coordinator at Lees-McRae. Proctor's prep coaching portfolio lists three years as head football coach at Keene High School, in Keene, N.H. and one year as head football coach at Chatham Township High School in Chatham, N.J. While at Chatman Township, he was named New Jersey coach-of-the-year. A native of Wallingford, Conn., Proctor attended Lyman Hall High School, where he was an all-state player. His collegiate years were spent at Northern Iowa and Morehead State (Kentucky). At Morehead State, he started at offensive tackle and helped his team to a conference title. He holds a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation (1967) and a master's degree in education (1968) from Morehead State. Proctor and his wife Martha are the parents of two children Susan and Tom. Tom is an undergraduate at Utah. MIKE GILLHAMER Defensive Backs Now in his fourth year as Utah's defensive back coach, Mike Gillhamer owns a solid reputation within the ranks. In 1987, Gillhamer instructed one of the nation's top defensive backs in Eric Jacobsen. Jacobsen's seven interceptions were tops in the WAC and 15th in the nation. Before Jacobsen, Gillhamer coached All-America defensive back Erroll Tucker, who went on to sign a pro contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL. Gillhamer arrived at Utah via Weber State, where he served as defensive back coach in 1984. Prior to joining the Wildcat staff, Gillhamer spent five years as secondary coach at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. During his stint there, the school captured three Central Valley Conference Championships. The team led the league in defense three seasons and in interceptions one season. Gillhamer also spent two years as an assistant coach at Redwood High School in Visalia, Calif. The Fresno, Calif, native graduated from Hoover High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in physical education (1976) and a master's degree in special education (1981) from Humboldt State. As an undergraduate at Humboldt State, Gillhamer was named his team's most valuable defensive back. He also participated in track and baseball. DON ECK Offensive Line Don Eck learned the ropes fast in his first year as a full-time Ute assistant, last fall. Eck, who spent the previous two years as a graduate assistant, found himself short of healthy bodies and experienced linemen in his first year as offensive line coach. With game-tested veterans returning and some solid offseason recruiting, Eck remedied that situation for the upcoming year. A talented young coach, Eck gained a great deal of knowledge about the offensive line as a player. He was a three-year starting center at Utah and was named second team all-wac in 1981 and '82 and honorable mention in 1980. Following his senior year, Eck acted as a student assistant, while completing his bachelor's degree in physical education. In 1984, he worked as offensive and defensive line coach at Woods Cross High School in Woods Cross, Utah. He returned to the 'U' as a graduate assistant in 1985. Prior to his playing days at Utah, Eck was a prep standout at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Calif. He was named all-cif and all-league. Also a star wrestler, Eck finished third in the CIF and eighth in the state. He paced the Santa Fe grapplers to the CIF title in 1979. Eck, who earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Utah in 1983, is pursuing a master's degree in sport psychology. 'Geno' played for the Utes from 1978-82, and was named second-team all-wac in 1982. He had brief stints with Dallas and Green Bay in the NFL, before entering private business. Knickrehm returned to football in 1987, when he joined the Utah staff as a graduate assistant coach. From Lompoc, Calif., Knickrehm earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Utah in 1985. BOB STANGEL Graduate Assistant/ Quarterbacks Bob Stangel, a former quarterback at Pacific and Mt. San Jacinto Junior College, is in his first year as graduate assistant at Utah. Stangel, who was Mt. San Jacinto's Offensive MVP, will work with the Ute quarterbacks. The former all-leaguer finished 10th in the nation in passing as a juco star, before accepting a scholarship to Pacific. From Riverside, Calif., Stangel graduated from Pacific in 1987, with a bachelor's degree in education. He is pursuing a master's degree in sports management at the 'U'. Stangel is married to the former Robyn Rossi. Senior Pasa Tukuafu (76 tackles) is in the running for a starting linebacker berth. Carl Harry led the Ute reception department last year, with 63 catches for 826 yards (13.1 average) and three scores. 121

GAMING BILL BEAN Trainer For the past dozen years, Bill Bean has treated and rehabilitated injured athletes at the University of Utah. Bean, now in his 13th year as Ute athletic trainer, oversees the training operation of Utah's 21 sport varsity program. In addition to his training credentials, Bean is a certified physical therapist. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education from Utah State in 1971 and received his master's in sports medicine from Utah in 1977. Bean earned a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Utah in 1986. He is married to the former Nancy Pickett. DR. HUGH BROWN Academic Advisor Dr. Hugh Brown, in his seventh year as athletic academic advisor, is also the assistant director of academic advising for the entire University. Brown was recipient of the Perlman Award for Counseling Excellence in 1988. He was a member of the National Athletic Academic Advisors' Association's "NCAA Legislative Affairs Commission," in 1987. A native of Glen Cove, N.Y., Brown earned a bachelor's degree in English from Vermont (1969). In 1979, he received his master's in educational psychology from Utah. He completed his PhD in educational administration at Utah in 1982. DR. BURTIS EVANS Team Physician Dr. Burtis Evans, the Ute football physician, is also president of the private internal medicine practice of Evans, Evans and Evans, Inc. On the board of directors of CARE Enterprises, Inc., Evans is secretary of the Salt Lake County Medical Association. He is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Utah and is president of Physician Care Corporation. An avid fan of the Utah symphony, Evans is currently on its board of directors and an executive committee member. A member of the Utah State Medical Association Legislative Committee, Evans serves on the House Staff Committee at LDS Hospital. He and his wife Jan have eight children. SAM VARNER Strength and Conditioning Coach Sam Varner brought motivation and intensity back to the Ute strength and conditioning program, when he re-joined the staff after a three-year absence. Varner, who was Utah's strength coach from 1982-84, left for a position as the U.S. Ski Team strength coach, before returning to the 'U' in 1987. The 1984 Regional Strength and Conditioning Coach-of-the- Year, Varner was also Region V National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Director. Varner is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He was on the strength staff of the 1982 national champion Clemson Tiger football team. Varner graduated from North Carolina State in 1977, with bachelor degrees in nutrition and biology. CRAIG VER STEEG Recruiting Coordinator After two years as a graduate assistant working with the Ute quarterbacks, Craig Ver Steeg has moved into the role of athletic department recruiting coordinator. Prior to his move to Utah, Ver Steeg was a graduate assistant coach at Southern California (1984-85), where he worked with the Trojan quarterbacks, and was the defensive secondary coach at Redondo Union High School (Calif.). He previously attended El Camino Junior College, where he competed for the wrestling team. Ver Steeg graduated from USC with a bachelor's degree in English and public relations (1983) and earned a master's in education (1986) from the same institution. ROBERT WISCOMB Equipment Manager Robert Wiscomb begins his sixth year as athletic department equipment manager this fall. He spent the four previous years as assistant equipment manager. Wiscomb is responsible for ordering equipment, and handles laundry and equipment maintenance. His equipment duties extend to all home and away games. Currently serving a two-year term on the Bike Athletic Council, Wiscomb is finishing his degree in consumer studies at the 'U'. 13)
