SCAAA Records of the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association Records of Committee the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association and its predecessor comprising minutes of the Southern Committee including General Committee, 1938; Southern Champions Committee, 1931-1958; Southern Committee, 1896-1961; Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee, 1957-1969; Sub-Committee on organising athletics for H.M. Services (Military Sub-Committee), 1915-1917; Championships Committee, 1959-1969; and minutes of the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association, 1961-1986 and of its Annual General Meetings, 1975-1983. Administrative history: The Southern Committee was set up by the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) in 1883 as a counterpart to the Northern Counties Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Midland Counties Amateur Athletic Association (MCAAA) and it served as an area association of the AAA. In 1961, the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association was formed and was put on the same footing as the MCAAA and the NCAA. Athletics remained a sport for men until the 1920s when women entered the sport. The independent men's and women's organisations have now merged and the amateur-professional separation has been abandoned. In 1991, the SCAAA amalgamated with the Southern Counties Women's Amateur Athletic Association (SCWAAA, founded in 1930) to form the South of England Athletic Association. This now serves as the governing body for athletics within the South of England. Reference: P. this sequence illustrating the administration of the association. There appears to be some overlap of minute books in the 1960s resulting ocassionally in duplicate minutes being kept in different volumes. It seems that the minute-keepers had more than one minute book active at a given time and so some committees may not be as fully represented in one volume as it may be in another. The Southern committee was responsible for the overall administration and decision making with the other committees and sub-committees having responsibility for specific areas. They reported back to the Southern committee with their findings which were minuted in the committee meetings and they in turn informed the Amateur Athletic Association of developmenta within the association. from the following committees can be found within the minutes of this series: Official's Committee Southern Championships Committee Handicapping Board of Control Finance and General Purposes committee from the following sub-committess can be found within the minutes of this series: Coaching Sub-Committee General Purposes Sub-Committee Development Sub-Committee Southern Championships Sub-Committee Many of the SCAAA officers sat on more than one committee, including that of the AAA. The Southern Committee was established in to administer the athletics of the southern counties until the decision was made to create the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association in 1961. The previous minute books covering 3

the years are to be found in the Amateur Athletics Association archive at reference. The Southern Committee of the Amateur Athletic Association officially became the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association in March 1961, and was from then on equal footing with the Midland and Northern Counties Amateur Athletic Association. Prior to this the Southern Committee, as part of the Amateur Athletic Association, administered the sport for the southern counties of England. 15 volumes SCAAA/1/1/1 This volume covers the dates 20th January to 7th December. The minutes of March 24th are the first for the Southern Committee as part of the Southern Counties Amateur Athletic Association which officially came into being on the 18th of that month.
