Head Coach Jack Effner 2007-08 Viking Wrestling Jack Effner Head Coach 10th Year at CSU 19th Year Overall In his 10th season at Cleveland State, head coach Jack Effner combines a strong passion and work ethic that have undoubtedly had an effect on his wrestlers, who in turn translate Effner's fiery coaching style into wins on the wrestling mat. Effner has mentored 35 NCAA qualifiers and five Eastern Wrestling League champions during his tenure at CSU. In each of the last six years, at least three Vikings have advanced to the national tournament. With a young and talented group on board this year, Effner will attempt to achieve that again this season. Last season, Effner guided the Vikings to 10 wins, the second most in his tenure. In addition, he helped three grapplers earn a spot at the NCAA Championship. Effner's most successful season at the helm of the Vikings came in 2002-03, when CSU went 13-6 in dual matches, the most wins since the 1978-79 Vikings won 15, and sent a school record-tying six wrestlers to the NCAA tournament. In just his second season at CSU, 1999-00, Effner led the Vikings to a 9-8-1 record, the program s first winning season in eight years. The Vikings have also been winners in the classroom under Effner's tutelage, finishing in the top 20 in the nation in grade point average in eight of the last nine seasons. The 2000 edition of the Vikings posted the school's highest academic ranking, placing seventh out of nearly 100 schools across the nation. Effner came to Cleveland State in 1998 after serving as the head coach at Army for nine years. While at West Point, Effner compiled an 87-42-5 record and never had a losing season. He led 17 Cadets to the NCAA tournament and his 87 dual meet wins are still the third-highest in the U.S. Military Academy's history. Effner's best season at Army came in 1989-90, when he led the Cadets to a 15-3-1 mark and a third-place finish in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. Army would have three more seasons with 11 wins or more during Effner's tenure, including two seasons (91-92 and 93-94) in which he led the Cadets to a dozen wins. Before being named Army's head coach, Effner was an assistant coach at Army during the 1988-89 season, and was an assistant coach at Clemson from January 1987 to November 1988. Effner enjoyed a stellar wrestling career at Indiana State, capturing All-America honors twice and advancing to the NCAA Tournament three times at 142 pounds. He placed fifth in the nation as a senior in 1986 and sixth as a junior. His 128 victories stand third on the school's all-time list. Effner won a state championship in high school at 132 pounds in 1982 to cap off a perfect 35-0 season while at South Vigo in Terre Haute, Ind. Effner earned a bachelor's degree in industrial education from Indiana State in 1986 and he holds two master's degrees. Effner earned master's degrees in industrial education from Clemson in 1993 and Counseling & Education from Long Island in 1997. He and his wife, Lori, have two sons, Jason (26) and Marcus (21), and one daughter, Kayla Marie (16). The Effners reside in Garfield Heights, Ohio. Head coach Jack Effner has mentored 35 wrestlers in the NCAA Championships during his nine seasons at the helm of the Vikings. 2007-08 Viking Wrestling Assistant Coaches Anthony Coleman Assistant Coach First Year Former CSU wrestler Anthony Coleman enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Vikings after spending last season as a graduate assistant coach. Prior to arriving at CSU, Coleman spent two years accumulating coaching experience at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. As an assistant coach at Limestone during the 2005-06 season at Limestone, Coleman signed 15 student athletes and designed the "Mat Talk" seasonal newsletter which is still being used by the program today. He then joined the Viking coaching staff as a graduate assistant last season and was successful in signing 12 student athletes and developed a Sports Psychology Training Manual for Wresting. Coleman, who won 87 matches during his Viking career, was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 149 pounds as a junior in 2003, and at 141 pounds his senior year. He won 49 matches in those two seasons and scored one victory at the 2004 NCAA Championship. In addition, he earned CSU's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award as a redshirt freshman in 2001. Coleman won an Ohio state championship at Bellevue in 1999 and placed eighth at the high school nationals. He received a bachelor's degree in communication from Cleveland State in 2004 and is currently pursuing his master's in sports management at CSU. Chris Steadman Graduate Assistant Coach Stevan Mladenovic Assistant Coach Jason Effner Director of Wrestling Operations Julie Brough Assistant Athletic Trainer First Year First Year Third Year Second Year Chris Steadman is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. Steadman returned to Cleveland State for the 2007-08 season after serving as the head wrestling coach at Eastlake North HIgh School for the previous six seasons (2000-06). A three-year member of the varsity team at Eastlake North, Steadman was a two-time MVP and placed fifth at the Ohio State Tournament. He finished his high school career with a 91-22 (.810) record. Steadman started and wrestled in the EWL Championships (2000-01) before graduating from Cleveland State with a teaching degree. Stevan Mladenovic is in his first season as an assistant coach on the Cleveland State wrestling staff. A two-time University National runner-up (1990, 1992), a four-time Yugoslavian national champion and a Junior World Silver Medalist in 1985, Mladenovic will be a huge asset to the coaching staff. He wrestled for 10 years for the Proleter European Club and placed first at 185 pounds for two years before moving to the United States. Mladenovic also wrestled for two years at Cuyahoga Community College (1991-93) before graduating with an Associate of Science and working toward an International Business degree at CSU. His coaching experience was gained as the assistant coach at Brecksville and as assistant coach of the National Junior Team Ohio 2006 and 2007 in Greco Roman style. Jason Effner is in his third year on the wrestling coaching staff and his second as Director of Wrestling Operations. Effner was a four-year starter at CSU from 2000-04, posting 64 wins at 157 and 165 pounds. He served as team captain as a senior and placed fourth in the EWL Tournament at 157, his highest finish at the league meet, and was named an NCAA alternate. Effner posted second place finishes at the CSU Open and the Oklahoma Gold Classic during his sophomore and junior campaigns. Effner, who placed fourth in the high school state tournament in 1999, is the oldest son of head coach Jack Effner. He graduated from Cleveland State in 2004 with a degree in industrial engineering and is currently working toward a degree in civil engineering at CSU. Effner resides in Garfield Heights, Ohio, and works as a project manager for Neshkin Construction Julie Brough is in her second year on the CSU athletic training staff, where she is responsible for the medical needs of the CSU men s soccer and wrestling teams. Brough came to CSU after spending three years as a graduate assistant trainer at Alabama A&M University. Prior to her stint at Alabama A&M, she was a strength and conditioning intern at the University of Wyoming in 2002. While an undergraduate at Wyoming from 1997-2002, she served as a student athletic trainer. Brough, who has been a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association since 2004, received a bachelor s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Wyoming in 2002 and is currently pursuing her master s degree in computer science. 2007-08 Outlook 2007-08 Viking Wrestling Cleveland State takes great pride in consistently competing on a national stage. Every year since 1965, at least one member of the Viking wrestling squad has advanced to the NCAA Championship. The tradition of excellence on the national level has continued with head coach Jack Effner at the head of the program, as the Vikings have sent 35 athletes to the national tournament during his nine years at CSU. Cleveland State returns two of its three NCAA qualifiers form a season ago, highlighted by three-time qualifier Ryan Hurley, as well as 285-pound competitor Rashard Goff, who has been to nationals two consecutive seasons. Mike Hurley and Marcus Effner have both been to nationals, but fell short last year, and will be working quite dilligently to return to the NCAA Championship this season. Following is a breakdown by weight class of how the Vikings will stack up this season. 125 RETURNING STARTER Ryan Riggs - Sr. 2006-07 Record: 12-14 KEY NEWCOMER Matt Reynolds - Fr. The presence of Matt Reynolds in the 125- pound class gives the Vikings a great one-two punch in the weight class, as both Reynolds and senior Ryan Riggs bring a great deal of talent to bear. After going 4-2 in EWL matches last season, Riggs has proven to be a solid competitor. Coach Effner looks forward to being able to alternate Riggs and Reynolds throughout the season, and predicts that the two will push each other considerably throughout the season. Reynolds won 95 matches at Marion Pleasant H.S., including a third place finish in the state as a senior and fourt place as a junior. 133 PROJECTED STARTER Josh Palivoda - Fr. KEY RETURNER David Armstrong 2006-07 Record: 15-12 KEY NEWCOMER Matt Waxman - So. Going into the 2007-08 season will be difficult without the benefit of being able to plug a Senior Ryan Riggs is slated to receive a majority of action at 125 pounds after winning 12 matches last season. former NCAA qualifier like David Armstrong into the lineup, as he will be sitting out the 2007-08 season. Fortunately, this problem will be lessened considerably with the presence of top recruit Josh Palivoda. Palivoda was a high school state champion in Ohio at Marysville H.S. last year, and will be not be alone in his quest for mat time with the Vikings as transfer Matt Waxman will be working hard to get back to speed after transferring from Ohio. 141 RETURNING STARTER Mike Hurley - Sr. 2006-07 Record: 20-11 KEY RETURNERS Antonio Nicholson - Jr. 2006-07 Record: 3-3 KEY NEWCOMERS Lawrence Cavello - Fr. TJ Chapplear - Fr. Senior Mike Hurley has been slowed by injuries throughout his career, but may be coming back into his own this year. He was close to earning a berth at nationals last season and will be fighting hard to make it back this year. A fierce competitor whose unorthodox style makes him a fan favorite, Hurley won 20 matches last season and was an NCAA qualifier as a sophomore. Antonio NIcholson is just about the opposite of Hurley in that he is very technical and disciplined. He has tremendous talent and will battle Hurley for the starting position, while Lawrence Cavello and TJ Chapplear will most likely redshirt this season. 149 RETURNING STARTER Ryan Hurley - Sr. 2006-07 Record: 28-13 * NCAA Qualifier * KEY RETURNERS Shaun Mitchell - So. 2006-07 Record: 3-12 Dan Castillo - So. 2006-07 Record: 1-4 KEY NEWCOMERS Thomas Schwartz - Fr. Tyler Young - Fr. William McCollie - Fr. Tim Vleck - Fr. Mike McLaughlin - Fr. Senior Ryan Hurley, who won a team-best 28 matches last season en route to the NCAA Championship for the third straight season, returns as the projected starter at CSU s deepest weight class. Hurley has just about done it all as a Viking, short of achieving All-America status as he was able to in high school. Shaun Mitchell and Dan Castillo are similar and solid wrestlers who will provide good depth at multiple weight classes throughout the season, in addition to pushing Hurley in practice. A slew of newcomers round out a packed 149 pound class as Thomas Schwartz, Tyler Young, William McCollie, Mike McLaughlin, and Tim Vleck will all most likely redshirt. 157 PROJECTED STARTER Robbie Michaels - Fr. KEY NEWCOMERS Dustin Doty - Fr. KEY LOSS Victer Crenshaw 2006-07 Record: 26-11 *NCAA Qualifier* Replacing an NCAA qualifer such as Victer Crenshaw is definitely a difficult task. Fortunately for the Vikings, redshirt freshman Robbie Michaels just may be poised for a break out year, after going 9-3 competing only in 4 www.csuvikings.com

2007-08 Viking Wrestling 2007-08 Outlook open meets as an unattached athlete last season. A state runner up at Clyde H.S., Michaels holds records at his high school for career wins (181) and winning percentage (.942). Freshman Dustin Doty is redshirt candidate who will certainly help the team in practice, after placing second in the sectional championshio and third at the city championship as a senior at Toledo Start H.S. 165 RETURNING STARTER Marcus Effner - Jr. 2005-06 Record: 25-15 KEY RETURNERS Nate Kmetz - Jr. 2006-07 Record: 4-22 Junior Marcus Effner is back and poised to succeed in his bid to make it back to the NCAA Championship after falling short last season. A wiry, unorthodox type of wrestler, Effner posted a 25-15 mark last season, including a 5-1 mark in EWL competition. Junior Nate Kmetz has been thrust into many different weight classes throughout his Viking career, and this utility man has done well in everything that has been asked of him throughout. Kmetz may have only won four matches last season as he wrestled up at 174 pounds, but he continued to overachieve and was competitive in nearly all of his matches. Kmetz will battle Effner at practice and the two will continue to make each other better wrestlers. 174 PROJECTED STARTER JT Miller - Jr. KEY NEWCOMERS Caleb Kennedy - Fr. Gered Tolson - Jr. JT Miller, who is n his fourth year with the Vikings, has paid his dues wrestling at multiple weight classes in the past. He should not disappoint given this chance to start at 174 pounds this year after taking last season to redshirt. Freshman Caleb Kennedy has a lot to learn but will battle for a spot in the Viking lineup this season, while transfer Gerred Tolson is a likely redshirt. Kennedy won 101 matches in his high school career and placed second in the state as a senior, while Tolson helped lead Padua to four league championships during his tenure as a Bruin. He also placed second in the state as a senior. 184 RETURNING STARTER Chris Hahn - Jr. 2006-07 Record 15-7 KEY RETURNERS Benny Balogh - So. 2006-07 Record: 7-11 KEY NEWCOMERS Derek Cummins - Fr. KEY LOSS David Gilkey 2006-07 Record: 17-20 Junior Chris Hahn enters the season as the front-runner for the starting nod at 184- pounds. His potential is great, as evidenced by his near miss in a bid to make it to nationals last season, coupled with a strong finish to the year after securing a starting spot on the team. Challenging Hahn for the starting spot at 184 will be sophomore Benny Balogh and freshman Derek Cummins. Balogh is short and stocky, using his frame and low center of gravity to his advantage, as he is hard to score on. He went 7-11 last season. Cummins has already made an impression on his teammates during the preseason, garnering the nickame The Bear due to his relentless nature. Cummins will push both Hahn and Balogh for a position on the mat after tallying a 145-34 career record at Lincoln H.S. and placing eighth in the state as a senior. 197 PROJECTED STARTER Alek Hughes - Fr. Freshman Alek Hughes will have to be a quick learner to the ways of collegiate wrestling as the only option at 197 pounds for CSU this season. A state runner-up in high school, Hughes is a dangerous opponent who forces his opponents to go hard the whole round, and physically breaks down those opponents who are unable to do so. Hughes went a combined 140-30 at Seneca East H.S., including a 45-3 mark as a senior. 285 RETURNING STARTER Rashard Goff - Jr. 2006-07 Record: 26-17 * NCAA Qualifier * KEY RETURNER Jeff Schuller - Jr. 2006-07 Record: 3-3 KEY NEWCOMERS Eric Schwartz - Fr. Junior and two-time NCAA qualifier Rashard Goff highlights a position of strength for the Vikings. Goff has been one of CSU s top grapplers over the last two seasons, going 50-35 during that time with eight pins. 2007-08 Viking Wrestling 2006-07 in Review The 2006-07 wrestling season saw Cleveland State continue to improve, as the Vikings went from a 6-8 dual meet competition in 2005-06 to 10-5 record in 2006-2007. The Vikings sent six wrestlers to the semifinal round of the EWL tournament, while three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships. Here is a look back at the 2006-07 wrestling campaign. Vikings Finish 7-2 in Non-League The Non-EWL portion of the schedule was where the Vikings were able to experience plenty of successes, as they got the ball rolling with a resounding 38-3 victory over John Carroll following tournaments at Eastern Michigan, Michigan State, and Ashland. The win over the Blue Streaks featured three pins and two major decisions After competing at the Penn State Open, the Vikings returned home to host the CSU Open on Dec. 16 in Woodling Gym. The tournament showcased the strengths of the team for the present and future, as Victer Crenshaw was an individual winner at 157 pounds, and five other Vikings placed in the top five. After another trip to Evanston, Ill. for the Midlands Tourney, the Vikings were back home to face Kent State, where they dropped a 29-9 decision to the Golden Flashes. However, the Vikings went on a tear following that setback, losing only one time the rest of the way during the nonconference schedule. Mike Hurley was one of five CSU wrestlers to post at least 20 wins last season David Armstrong and Crenshaw led the team through this stretch, going a combined 13-1 as the Vikings earned decisions over Appalachian State, (25-18), Eastern Illinois, (32-12), Eastern Michigan, (18-15), Air Force, (23-10), Ashland, (35-10), and Ohio, (24-12). The lone CSU loss came at the hands of Purdue during the Purdue Duals (1/6). Crenshaw was named the EWL Wrestler of the Week during this stretch as he posted a perfect 7-0 record. Vikings Go 3-3 In EWL Duals The EWL season started with a win over Pittsburgh for the second straight year, as Chris Hahn showcased his skills in leading the team to a 21-12 victory with a pin at 197 pounds on Jan. 24. Hahn would repeat the trick in his next Cleveland State NCAA Qualifiers 149 - Ryan Hurley 157 - Victer Crenshaw 285 - Rashard Goff bout to secure a win against Lock Haven on Feb. 2, to help the Vikings to an 18-16 victory. CSU dropped a pair of duals against Bloomsburg, 18-13, and league power Edinboro, 33-6, before pinning a loss on Clarion on Feb. 11 in a meet which featured five pins by Viking wrestlers. The Vikings then dropped the season finale on the road against West Virginia, 24-12 on Feb. 18. Three Capture NCAA Tournament Berths Every March since 1965, the wrestling team represents Cleveland State on a national stage at the NCAA Tournament, and the 2006-07 Vikings made sure to keep CSU on the wrestling map. The Vikings sent three wrestlers to the national tournament, with Ryan Hurley and Rashard Goff making their third and second straight appearances, respectively, and Crenshaw appearing at the national tournament for his first time in his career. Hurley and Goff each went 1-1 on the first day before losing hard fought bouts in the consolation rounds, while Crenshaw bowed out early going 0-2 on the first day. Hurley Leads Team Hurley was the CSU Varsity C Wrestler of the year, as he paced the team with a career and team high 28 victories. He was consistent throughout the year from start to Ryan Hurley was one of three CSU grapplers to qualify for the NCAA Championship and led the squad with 28 wins. finish, including a 9-1 start which helped Hurley earn a national ranking. Hurley fought hard in making it to nationals after a second round loss in the EWL Tournament put him in the consolation bracket. He went on to win the consolation bracket and third place in the tournament, securing a wild-card bid to the national meet. Crenshaw Breaks Out Sophomore Victer Crenshaw had a breakout season in 2006-07 after going 26-11, as he made the NCAA Championships for the first time and improved markedly over his freshman season which saw him win 20 bouts. He was an individual winner at the CSU Open and was able to earn his wild-card berth in the NCAA tournament despite a fifth place finish at the EWL Championship. 2007 NCAA Team Results 1. 2007-08 Viking Wrestling The Eastern Wrestling League Eastern Wrestling League 168 Brook Street Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 Publicity Director: Lee Richards (717) 822-3756 www.wrestlingreport.com/ewl Member Schools Bloomsburg Huskies Clarion Golden Eagles Cleveland State Vikings Edinboro Fighting Scots Lock Haven Bald Eagles Pittsburgh Panthers West Virginia Mountaineers The Eastern Wrestling League, formed in 1975, annually features some of the best teams and individuals in the nation. The league has brought together several traditional powerhouse programs in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and has expanded through the years to include some of the biggest names in collegiate wrestling. The league was formed before the 1975-76 season with Bloomsburg, Buffalo, Clarion, Lock Haven, Penn State and Pittsburgh as charter members. Two years later, Cleveland State and West Virginia brought the total number of schools to eight before Buffalo s departure later that year. Millersville was added in 1981-82, but withdrew from the league after the 1983-84 season. Penn State would later leave the league when the rest of its programs joined the Big Ten, but the addition of Edinboro has kept the league stable at seven teams. Upon entering the league, Cleveland State immediately proved it belonged by finishing second in the EWL tournament in its first season. The next season, the Vikings claimed both the dual meet and tournament championships, the only time in school history CSU has completed the sweep. 2006-07 Eastern Wrestling League Final Standings EWL Overall Team W L T W L T Edinboro 6 0 0 17 1 0 Bloomsburg 4 2 0 12 9 0 West Virginia 4 2 0 5 5 0 Cleveland State 3 3 0 10 5 0 Lock Haven 2 4 0 8 6 0 Pittsburgh 2 4 0 7 7 0 Clarion 0 6 0 7 13 0 Cleveland State has crowned 24 Eastern Wrestling League champions, including at least one in each of its first four seasons in the league. Ron Varga (1978) and Dan Foldesy (1980 & 1983) each earned the honor, adding to the Viking lore in the EWL.
