Also known as he Rockaway Freeway, he Underway is an underuilized space ha should be planned and designed in a way ha benefis he communiy, connecs he eas and wes ends of he Peninsula and provides a safer and more equiable roue ha people of all ages can use o ge o school, work and home. Piloed measures will include reducing sorm waer run off hrough green infrasrucure, insalling rash recepacles for cleaner srees, hiring locals o mainain he propery and programming he space o bring economic developmen o he area hrough culural evens, he ars and food concessions. RWA will monior he implemened measures o provide insigh ino heir success. Phase II: Revise RWA will work wih he communiy o assess he pilo, revise implemened measures and develop long erm goals for Projec Underway informed by communiy inpu and pilo daa. Goals may include improved sree crossings, landscaping, solar lighing, public plazas and ADA accessibiliy. Phase III: Implemen RWA will develop a sraegic plan wih sakeholders and landowners o connec he enire srech of he Underway from Mo Ave. o 116h S. This will require esablishing a governance srucure o address oversigh and managemen of he propery. The full plan will reconnec he Rockaways wih improved access o ransporaion and recreaion.

Projec Underway is he resul of a communiy visioning process, which included collaboraive lisening sessions held hroughou he Rockaways as well as meeings wih local residens, planners and ciy agencies o develop a plan for a safer ransporaion corridor under he elevaed MTA A-line rack.
