Activities just for you! In this booklet, you will find all the necessary information to help you choose a made-to-measure activity for your pupils. Our four centres have decided to come together to present what we have to offer to you and in so doing, help you avoid a lot of work. Knowing that your days are already very busy, we are more than happy to make them a little easier. Did you know that you are entitled to receive a certain amount of funding for your cultural activities? Indeed, the Ministry of Culture and Communications has set aside money for school boards. All that you have to do is contact the person responsible for culture in your local area. Please note that 75% of the expenses for the activities are covered; these include both transportation and admission fees. We are pleased to be able to help you enhance your teaching thanks to our facilities. One visit with us and you will appreciate the potential of what is hidden within our walls. Museum of the Gaspé Peninsula A regional cultural institution, the Museum of the Gaspé Peninsula is the witness to the identity and imagination of the people of the Gaspé region. The museum preserves and disperses the regional cultural heritage which is the basis of local life; a unique undertaking indeed. Through its rich collection of cultural works and objects, the Museum of the Gaspé Peninsula reveals to local residents, fellow Quebecers, and visitors from all over the world, the soul of a still thriving and deep-rooted community. The Museum of the Gaspé Peninsula is by far the best place to discover the history of our wonderful peninsula through visiting the following: the permanent exhibit Gaspésie the grand journey!, as well as its numerous seasonal exhibits, 4 to 6 new annual exhibits which focus on history, art, and the heritage of Gaspé. The museum s clientele has privileged access to the archive centre of the Gaspé Peninsula and also to a service depot of the BAnQ. The museum is also the editor of Magazine Gaspésie. For first cycle pupils of elementary school Detectives, get out your magnifying glasses! Situational activity: Help! A little rascal has had some fun mixing up a dozen old photos which have not yet been dated! Become student-detectives and go looking for hints to solve the enigma of the mysterious photos without dates. This activity allows pupils to establish an initial contact with archival photographs and to become familiar with this medium which serves as witness to a period of time and a way of life. They will make contact with authentic archival documents taken from the collection of the Museum of the Gaspé Peninsula (1880 to today); documents which illustrate familiar themes: street life, home, family, school, church, stores, and land and sea transportation. For second cycle pupils of elementary school In search of the Micmacs Do you know the first inhabitants of the Gaspé Peninsula? The Micmacs (Mi kmaq)? Discover the fascinating history of this First Nations community of the Gaspé region thanks to authentic Micmac artifacts. Some are strange, others ingenious, but all of them exemplify a unique savoir-faire! Through an interactive presentation, pupils will learn more about the Micmacs (their traditional way of life, their presence in the Gaspé region, and their characteristics). This activity is followed by a matching game which invites pupils to associate traditional Micmac objects used in the past with those of today s way of life.

For third cycle pupils of elementary school Making a living from the sea Be it the Saint Lawrence River, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, or the Bay of Chaleurs, the Gaspé Peninsula is surrounded by the sea. One hundred years ago in the Gaspé region, almost all the sources of employment were connected to the sea. During this activity, pupils will learn about the trades practiced by the inhabitants of the 19th-century Gaspé Peninsula: sea captains, lighthouse keepers, whale fishers, marine carpenters, fishermen, graviers, cod merchants, and fisheries inspectors. While exploring the permanent exhibit and the contents of their tool boxes, pupils will discover diverse objects (tools, instruments) and archival documents (photographs, maps, etc.) which will allow them to familiarize themselves with their ancestors trades and even maybe meet a few of them! SOMETHING NEW! Amuse Personnage Mobile phone app for IPad downloaded with Amuse Personnage This is a new matching game which involves associating objects from the permanent exhibit, Gaspésie the grand journey! with characters from the Gaspé region. Ten IPads downloaded with Amuse Personnage will be available to school groups (2 to 3 pupils per IPad) to allow them to experience the app on site. You can also download the app from the App Store.

Acadian Museum of Quebec For third cycle elementary school pupils This museum shares the fascinating life of the Acadians and more specifically, how they established roots in Quebec and contributed to Quebec society. Several educational activities regarding this theme as well as other diverse exhibits from non-regional museums are offered all year to elementary school pupils. Consequently, we can adequately meet the varied needs of all teachers. With regards to positioning Acadian history in the elementary school program, it could be introduced at the end of grade 4, or at the beginning of grade 5. The main objective of this activity is to allow pupils the opportunity of discovering the history of their region. Let s play Acadians If pupils have already done their family tree, ask them to share the names which appear on it with their classmates. If not, ask them if any of their family names can be found on the list presented in the permanent exhibit. Situational activity: A group of Acadian descendants, the Atineux, are worried about the future of their people. Since 1755, the Acadians have not had any territory they could call their own, thus obliging them to continue to spread out into other territories. Quebec is one of the regions where Acadians can be found. The pupils, the group of Atineux, must discover traces of the Acadian population left in Quebec culture. With the help of a museum guide, the group must reveal these traces of the Acadians in Quebec society by consulting the exhibit Quebec Acadia. By examining objects and information in this exhibit, pupils will do research to find elements of Acadian culture which they brought to their new territory, Quebec. Other activities: 12-minute film viewing A short film explaining the deportation of the Acadians and their arrival in Quebec. The pupils must be attentive because several elements in the video can be reused in their presentation. Discovering their way of life In teams of four, pupils go gather information on one of nine themes which is assigned to them. The themes are: daily objects, agriculture, Acadian geography, language, holiday celebrations, architecture, families, religion, and Acadian celebrities. Mini-play Each team will be asked to present a short play in front of their classmates based on the discovery theme. Two-to-three-minute presentations given by these budding historians will allow them to share their newly acquired knowledge. Evaluation For those teachers interested, an evaluation grid will be available to evaluate the mini-plays based on two criteria: social interaction and drama.

Historic Site of Bourg de Pabos This site offers a unique experience in a building which has won two architectural prizes and which perfectly blends into its natural setting. The history of the Pabos Seigneury in New France is depicted in artwork accompanied with written descriptions on pivoting panels which are located next to those honouring the founding families of the site. The new exhibit room connects history and architecture. The exhibit clearly explains the knowledge acquired during archeological digs. This site is open only during the summer months; however, at other times the site is also open for groups. Please note that part of the visits take place outdoors. For third cycle elementary school pupils Discover with Fanfan From the period of the De Bellefeuille seigneurs, up to the King Brothers, pupils will be accompanied by Fanfan who will help them explore the historic site of Bourg de Pabos. They will learn how the founding families of Pabos and first fisherman of Gaspé lived during the seigneurial period of New France. Pupils will learn different techniques used in conducting archeological digs. They will then observe authentic artifacts discovered at Pabos in 1980. The last part of this activity will deal with the installation of the steam sawmill by the King Brothers at the end of the 19th century; 125 years after the destruction of the French Bourg, and forty years before the establishment of the first pulp and paper mill in Chandler. Pupils will view the ruins of the sawmill and also discover the ecological impact of the forestry industry on the Bay des Chaleurs.

Manoir LeBoutillier Dive back into 1850! Our guides, dressed in period costumes, will lead you into the empire of John LeBoutillier. Come discover our collection of artifacts, hand-made rugs, as well as reproductions of wall hangings which depict the period between 1850 and 1860 and which decorate the nine main exhibit rooms. You will be impressed by the free-standing central staircase and delighted to discover the original European furniture which John LeBoutillier, a ship-owner and international merchant, had transported from overseas in his ships. Encouraging elementary school pupils to discover all aspects of culture (Duration: 1 hour per site) La maison aux Lilas de l Anse Garden preparation (based on the climate) Small garden tools Vegetable garden preparation Seedlings and cuttings Le Manoir Le Boutillier Stories of the Manoir The captain s visit An appointment with the manager A day at the fish merchant s counter A walk along the Seigneurie de l Anse Discovering the seal hunt The weathervane Rorqual de pêche represents the ship of the same name on which fishermen from Jersey navigated to fish all along the Gaspé shores. The weathervane Morue de pêche represented another ship associated with Atlantic cod fishing and was used to announce the fishermen s return from the Grand Banks. Le Griffon Cultural Centre Seasonal exhibit at the Griffon Cultural Centre Visit of the current seasonal summer exhibit (theme to be announced) Possibility of participating in the fall harvest of crops planted by the pupils!
