SETTING THE STAGE Winners of five-straight home games, Green Bay continues its four-game homestand against a Youngstown State team that ended the season for the Phoenix in 2011-12. The Phoenix aims to enact some revenge against the Penguins, who posted a 77-60 win over Green Bay in the opening round of the 2012 Horizon League Championship. The current homestand has started with two impressive defensive performances as Green Bay claimed wins over Loyola (58-45) and UIC (53-47). All-Horizon League junior Alec Brown sparked the win over the Ramblers on Saturday, tallying 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. The 7-foot-1 junior has now scored 941 points and swatted 179 shots in his career at Green Bay. Youngstown State features a First-Team All-Horizon League player of its own in junior Kendrick Perry. The guard ranks third in the conference in scoring at 16.0 points per game and fifth in assists per game. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. INSIDE THE SERIES: Green Bay leads the all-time series with Youngstown State 24-8 and has won 15 of the 16 meetings with the Penguins in Green Bay. The Phoenix have won nine-straight meetings at home dating back to a 65-61 loss on March 4, 2003. Green Bay has never lost to the Penguins in Green Bay in regular season play. 2. DEFENDING THE HOME COURT: Green Bay has won five-straight games at the Resch Center on the strength of stifling defense. The Phoenix has not allowed more than 55 points and has held four opponents in the 40s during the stretch. In the last five games at the Resch Center, Green Bay foes are shooting just 33.8 percent and averaging 47.4 points per game. 3. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?: Junior Alec Brown has played well in the team s home winning streak, averaging 14.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He has also blocked four shots in each of the last two games and is closing in on 1,000 career points (941) and 200 career blocked shots (179). GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Youngstown State won both games in Ohio, defeating the Phoenix 77-47 on Jan. 22 and 77-60 in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship. In the three games, junior Alec Brown led the Phoenix averaging 14.7 points per game while Penguin senior guard Blake Allen scored 16.7 points per game in the season series. HOME SWEET HOME: Green Bay is 7-1 at home this season after five consecutive victories. In the past three seasons under head coach Brian Wardle, the Phoenix is 29-7 at the Resch Center, including a 19-3 mark since the start of the 2011-12 season. Sophomore Keifer Sykes is averaging 19.6 points and 5.3 assists per game and is 52-of-64 from the free-throw line at home this season. FREE AND EASY: Green Bay is among the top free-throw shooting teams in the Horizon League, and its 74.5 percent from the line ranks 28th nationally. The Phoenix is 272-340 on the season and, among teams ranked in the top-30 nationally in free-throw percentage, Green Bay has made the fifth-most free throws. RECORD STREAK: With a miss against UIC, junior Kam Cerroni saw his school-record free throw streak of 40 consecutive free throws come to an end. Cerroni broke the record of 38 previously held by Matt Rohde (2002-03) with a pair of free throws at Detroit on Jan. 5, and his streak dated back to Feb. 4, 2012. The junior is now 28-of-29 at the charity stripe this season. KAM CATCHING FIRE: Cerroni led the Horizon League in three-point percentage as a sophomore in 2011-12 but struggled early this season from long range. However, Cerroni is starting to catch fire. He drained all three of his attempts from beyond the arc against Loyola, and since Dec. 12 at Wisconsin, Cerroni is shooting 44.8 percent (13-29) from three-point range. With an assist-to-turnover ratio better than 2-to-1, Sykes has 70 assists compared to just 32 turnovers in the past 16 games. In addition to ranking fourth in the conference in points, he is sixth in assists (4.1) and tied for fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). Through his first two and a half seasons, Alec Brown has positioned himself to become one of the best players in program history. He became the first sophomore in 18 seasons to be named first-team all-conference (Jeff Nordgaard in 1993-94 and Tony Bennett in 1989-90 were the last two). His 739 points were the fourth-most through a sophomore season in the program s Division I era, and he now has 941 points for a career average of 11.9 ppg. Brown s 425 rebounds were the most by a Green Bay player through a sophomore campaign in DI history. The 7-foot-1 Brown has reached double figures in 51 of 79 games and made 78 starts. LOOKING TO JOIN THE CLUB Brown, with 941 points through 79 career games, is on pace to join the program s 1,000-point club this season. With 59 more points, Brown will become the 25th player in program history to eclipse the mark. The last Phoenix player to join the 1,000-point club was Rahmon Fletcher, who also did so as a junior in 2009-10. BLOCK PARTY Brown has blocked four shots in each of the past two games and now has 23 on the season and 179 for his career. The 7-foot-1 Brown is tied for second in the Horizon League and has taken over the team lead in blocks per game (1.4). With at least one block in 67 of 79 games, he holds the school records for blocks in a career (179), season (89) and game (11). WELL-ROUNDED ROOKIE Freshman Jordan Fouse is one of three Phoenix players to start each game this season (Brown, Sykes). Fouse is fourth in the Horizon League in rebounds per game (6.6) and tied for third in offensive rebounds per game (2.1). He led the Phoenix for much of the season in blocks and is now fourth in the league in blocks per game (1.2). Fouse tied a school-record for steals with seven against Loyola, and he is tied for seventh in steals in the HL (1.4). The Racine, Wis., native is the lone freshman in the conference to rank in any of those three categories (rebounds, blocks, steals). CONSISTENT LEADER Sykes ranks fourth in the Horizon League in points per game (15.6). The 5-foot-11 Sykes saw his streak of 12-straight games in double figures end against UIC but has reached 10 or more in 15 of 17 games this season and 30 times in his last 34 outings. He has scored 20 or more eight times, including five times in 2012-13. Sykes has led the team in scoring in 11 consecutive games. IMPRESSIVE AT 18 Sykes recently finished off an impressive year as an 18-year old, celebrating his 19th birthday on Dec. 30. Sykes scored 451 points in 29 games as an 18-year old, averaging 15.6 points per game. The Chicago native reached double 2012-13 Green Bay Roster No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. Including twice this season, Sykes also won Horizon League Player of the Week honors three times during the year (Feb. 27, Nov. 12, Dec. 24). IN GOOD COMPANY Sykes was added to the Bob Cousy Watch List in December as one of the nation s top point guards. The honor named after Hall of Famer Bob Cousy is handed out at the Final Four to the player named the top point guard in the country. 500 CLUB With a thunderous dunk in the opening minutes against Marquette, Sykes went over 500 points in just his 41st career game. The sophomore now has 601 points in 47 games to give him a career average of 12.8 points per game. UNGUARDABLE In a strange stat, Green Bay s opponents have been red hot at the foul line lately. The last three Phoenix foes have connected on a staggering 48-of-52 free throws. Detroit made 38-of-42 free throws on Jan. 5, and in last week s two home games Green Bay s opponents Loyola (2-2) and UIC (8-8) did not miss a free throw. The Phoenix has made 50 more free throws than its opponents. at GREEN BAY 53, UIC 47 Junior Alec Brown was dominant with 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, leading Green Bay (8-9, 2-2 HL) to a 53-47 win over visiting UIC, the fifth-straight home victory. Green Bay led for much of the first half, and the game was tied 26-26 at the half, but the hosts struggled offensively in the second half and trailed 43-40 with 4:48 to play. With layups from senior Brennan Cougill and freshman Jordan Fouse and a three-point play from Brown, Green Bay scored the next seven points and ended the game on a 13-4 run. One of the top free throw shooting teams in the country, Green Bay started the game just 9-of-18 from the line. In the decisive run, however, the Phoenix went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Brown went 5-of-5 from the line in the final minutes and finished the game with a season-high 21 points. The All-Horizon League First-Team selection hit 6-of-13 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from long range. LAST TIME OUT STIFLING D In Horizon League play, Green Bay is leading the conference in defensive field goal percentage (.365). The team s three-point field goal percentage defense is second in the conference (.288). At least four Phoenix opponents have been held in the forties for the first time since the 2000-01 season. QUALITY WINS Green Bay has posted two of the top non-conference wins in the Horizon League this season. The Phoenix defeated North Dakota State (RPI #54) on Nov. 24 and Marquette (RPI #21) on Dec. 19. HAULING IN 500 Junior Alec Brown had one of his best efforts of the season against South Dakota. The 7-foot-1 big man was an efficient 8-of-10 from the field and made both of his threes en route to a game-high 19 points. Brown also grabbed eight rebounds to become the 14th Phoenix player to corral 500 for his career. He now has 540 career rebounds, grabbing 190 offensive rebounds and 350 defensive rebounds in 79 games. The game also featured season lows in field goal makes (15), field goal percentage (25.9%) and free throw attempts (7). The 25.9 percent field goal percentage was the lowest in Resch Center history and the lowest by a Phoenix opponent since Nov. 17, 2000 (Idaho - 22.6%). HISTORIC WIN Not only was Green Bay s 49-47 on Dec. 19th win over Marquette historic because it was the first time the Golden Eagles had visited Green Bay in 12 all-time meetings, but it was also the first Phoenix victory in the series since Jan. 7, 1995 (50-48). Green Bay improved to 3-9 all-time in the series and, of course, 1-0 at home. IN THE ZONE Green Bay played almost exclusively zone defense in the win over Marquette, and the scrappy Phoenix stifled the Golden Eagles throughout the night, especially in the second 20 minutes. In the second half, Marquette scored just 16 points and made 6-of-22 field goals. The 47 points scored were the fewest by a Phoenix opponent since holding Loyola to 47 points on Dec. 3, 2011. Green Bay s 49 points scored were the fewest scored in a Phoenix win since beating Detroit 45-42 on Jan. 30, 2006. Phoenix Notes Team and Player Highs GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay is second in the Horizon League with a rebound margin of +3.1. Green Bay is fourth in the HL in offensive rebounds (10.5/game) and is third in defensive rebounds (24.5/game). Brown is tied for second in the Horizon League in rebounds per game at 6.8 while Fouse is fourth (6.6/game). Fouse is tied for third in offensive rebounds and has 35 on the season. Brown (33), Cougill (26) and Mays (25) all also have at least 25 offensive boards. RECORD TRIES Against Chicago State, Green Bay broke a 32-year old program record for free throws made in a game by knocking down 41-of-48 from the charity stripe. Sykes had 17 of the team s free throws to break the program s individual record of 15. DOUBLE THE FUN Against Southern Utah on Nov. 16, Brown (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Cougill (17 points, 10 rebounds) both had doubledoubles in a win over Southern Utah. In its Division I history, Green Bay has had two players post double doubles on just four occasions. Three of the four have come under Wardle in the past three seasons.
