RACE TEAM 2017-2018 Racing provides a great way to improve your skills while having fun with your friends on the slopes. Every season RSOC competes against twenty other ski clubs in the Crescent Ski Council s Southeastern regional racing program. Last year, RSOC s race team took second place overall, and we hope to have another great season this year. For those who have an interest in racing, alpine, telemark, or snowboarding, now s your chance to join. Sign-ups started in October and continue throughout the season. All RSOC members are eligible for the team; there are no age restrictions. The youngest Crescent racer is four years old, and the oldest is over 70! Many on the program have been racing for over twenty years, and are likely to remind you of that; but, the majority of the racers are recreational skiers looking to challenge themselves on the local mountains. Competition is structured such that even first-time racers collect prizes, as all racers are grouped according to ability. The race season starts in December and consists of five weekend races in North Carolina, split between Appalachian, Beech, Canaan Valley and Sugar, with the finals held in March at Silver Creek, West Virginia. There is no requirement to attend all the races, so you can race as many, or as few as you like. Each weekend s multi-discipline race format consists of two runs of slalom on Saturday followed by two runs of giant slalom on Sunday. Prizes are given out each day. Race team benefits include discounts on lodging, lifts, equipment, performance tune-ups and repairs, access to professional coaching, and an excuse to wear spandex outside in the winter. Does it get much better than that? The race schedule is shown below. For more information, contact John Christensen by email (rsocracing@gmail.com) or phone (919) 412-3681. See you on the slopes. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF RSOC MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS! As a member of the RSOC, you are also a member of the Crescent Ski Council (CSC) and the National Ski Council Federation (NSCF). Numerous businesses have offered discounts to members of the clubs belonging to the NSCF. You can access the NSCF members benefits page through the RSOC website (www.raleighskiandoutingclub.org). 1) login; 2) click on members only in the left column; 3) login to the NSCF site; 4) scroll to the bottom of the page with a list of Quick Links, and click on Member Benefits. The numerous vendors offering discounts will then be listed. Some of the companies offering discounts are: Bern Unlimited (Helmets) 50% discount off any Bern helmet Christy Sports 20% off daily rate for ski/ snowboard rentals Freyja Canada 20% discount on Icelandic wool sweaters & accessories HaberVision.com 50% discount on their products I/O Merino 20% off full priced item (i.e. Merino tights, tops, jackets, necktubes) The Luggage Club 15% off normal rates for doorto-door luggage and goods delivery service Nautic Adventures 25% discount on sailing vacations (Caribbean/Greece/San Juan Is.)
