STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORT Moruya Jockey Club MORUYA RACECOURSE Tuesday 8 th August, 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Good (4) Rail: True STEWARDS: J D Walshe (Chairman), T J Vassallo & G E V Hargraves Supplementary Report Moruya Trackwork 27 July 2017 An inquiry was conducted today into the reasons for Rolling Breeze breaking down during trackwork at Moruya Racecourse on 27 July 2017 resulting in the gelding falling and its rider, stable foreperson Mrs M Nickson, being dislodged and transported to hospital for treatment. Evidence was taken from Mrs Nickson and trainer Mr D Nickson. On the evidence it was established that near the 700m, Rolling Breeze broke down with an injury later confirmed in a report tendered by veterinarian Dr J Dunkley (Moruya Veterinary Hospital) as a communited fracture of the right accessory carpel bone, necessitating in the filly being humanely euthanized. Upon consideration of Mr Nickson s treatment and veterinary records and Dr Dunkley s report, Stewards were satisfied that there was no evidence of any pre-existing condition which may have caused or contributed to the gelding breaking down and so the matter was formally concluded. RACE 1: Garfish Wines Maiden Handicap 930m Iolanta Became fractious in the barriers, reared over and momentarily became cast beneath the stalls. The mare was a late withdrawal at 12:45pm on veterinary advice. Stewards ordered that all investments placed on the mare be refunded in full and further, that all successful bets placed with bookmakers prior to 12:45pm be paid less the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1 st Foxdell: 9 win, 10 place 2 nd Harriet s Jewel: 8 place 3 rd Damagic: 10 place At a subsequent inquiry trainer Mr M Stephens was told that the mare would be required to barrier trial to the Steward s satisfaction prior to being permitted to race again. Miss D Oro Began awkwardly. Theatre Tickets Slow to begin and restrained soon after when taken in onto Inish Free by Harriet s Jewel which shifted in.
Damagic Passing the 850m was bumped by Seealla which was taken out by Harriet s Jewel which shifted out slightly. Raced wide for the remainder of the event. Harriet s Jewel Raced wide throughout. RACE 2: Concerto Wines Class 3 Handicap 1020m Case Passing the 850m was restrained when tightened between God s Heaven which shifted out slightly and Freedom Call (Ms J Taylor) which shifted in when not clear. Ms J Taylor was advised to exercise more care. Lindendoom A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormality. Whilst it was accepted that the mare would not be in contention for a placing, rider app Ms C McFarlane was spoken to regarding sitting up on her mount which exaggerated the beaten margin. RACE 3: Wicked Secrets Wines Maiden Handicap 1210m Clara Et Moi Trainer Ms S Hitchcock was told that the mare which missed the start (6L) would be required to barrier trial to the Steward s satisfaction prior to being permitted to race again. Young Snookums Slow to begin. Bank Of Erin Slow to begin. Laid in in the middle stages and passing the 900m lost ground. Rebel Forever Passing the 900m was restrained from the heels Bank Of Erin which lost ground. Miss Fiesole Held up rounding the home turn. Sirius Ascension On return to scale, rider M Travers reported that his mount had lost its tongue-tie during the race and said that whilst his mount had travelled well to the home turn, on straightening it did not respond to his riding but rather weakened. He attributed to the performance of his mount to the gear loss and stated that in his view the mare may have choked down without it s tongue-tie. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a poor recovery rate. Dance Harder Son - Rider app Ms C MacFarlane pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using her whip on nine occasions prior to the 100m, four more than is permitted. Bearing in mind Ms MacFarlane s poor record in relation to breaches under the Rule, her permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to be served at the expiration of a suspension incurred at Wagga on 1 August 2017 and therefore to commence on Monday 21 August 2017 and to expire on Monday 28 August 2017, on which day she may ride.
RACE 4: Shell Bay Wines Maiden Handicap 1435m Isadora Twinkle On arrival at the start the mare was found to have shifted its off-fore plate and after being tended to by the farrier, was trotted up and when observed to be lame in that leg, was a late withdrawal on veterinary advise at 2:40pm. Stewards ordered that all investments placed on the mare be refunded in full and further, that all successful bets placed with bookmakers prior to 2:40pm be paid less the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1 st Sacred Son: 1 win, 2 place 2 nd Sunday Hustler: 7 place 3 rd Bill s My Boy: 7 place At a subsequent inquiry co-trainer Ms E Longmire was told that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare being permitted to race again. Metro Missile Slow to begin. Bill s My Boy Slow to begin. After the 1300m had to be restrained from the heels of Sacred Son (J Penza) which shifted in when not clear. J Penza was advised to exercise more care. Over-raced in the middle stages. Raced greenly in the straight. Sacred Son Bumped on jumping by Sheboygan which shifted out. Smart Remark Approaching the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of Chivonne (App Ms C MacFarlane) which shifted in when not clear. App C MacFarlane was reprimanded (AR137(a)). Patee Cat and Metro Missile which were following had to be steadied in consequence. RACE 5: Birds Of Fire Wines Benchmark 60 Handicap 1210m Chilcotin Change of tactics: To make use of its inside draw and ridden more forward; Settled handy. On Our Selection The explanation tendered by trainer Mr R Potter for the late declaration of S Miller as the rider the gelding was accepted. Change of tactics: To ridden more forward; Led. Making the turn over the crossing after the 1600m hung out inconveniencing Arrows Destiny. Hello China Trainer Mr M Smith was advised that a final warning would be recorded against the gelding which proved difficult to load. Irenic Bounded on jumping. Held up for some distance on straightening. Satin Silks When questioned, rider P Wells stated that his mount dipped at the crossing after the 1600m and from this point did not feel comfortable in its action and failed to respond to his riding from the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare did not reveal any abnormality. Co-trainer Mr R Price advised that the mare would now be spelled but was told that prior to resuming, it must barrier trial to the Steward s satisfaction.
RACE 6: Stonefish International Wines Open Handicap 1210m Darts Away Slow to begin and bumped shortly after by Boys Day Out which shifted out. Boys Day Out Passing the 800m was bumped by Jorgeus which after contacting the running rail, shifted out abruptly. Termele When questioned regarding the performance, rider Ms R Hunt stated that her mount travelled well to the top of the straight but offered nothing from this point and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a poor recovery rate. Trainer Mr P Murray stated in his view the mare may not have backed up following its two prior Grafton runs and would be spelled immediately. RACE 7: Lost Turtle Wines Class 2 Handicap 1435m Lavington Star Near the 1200m was restrained when tightened by Scent Of A Woman which laid in despite the efforts of its rider. Held up rounding the home turn and the early part of the straight and gain near the 200m when it had to be steadied from the heels of Zooks. Smoke Alarm Raced wide throughout. Passing the 150m had to be checked when disappointed for a run between Catch The Culprit and Polyphemus. Excellent Oratorio Held up rounding the home turn and until passing the 300m. Scent Of A Woman Held up rounding the home turn and until shortly after straightening. Magic Scene Rounding the home turn was inconvenienced by Nunya Bizz which shifted out. Polyphemus - Rounding the home turn was inconvenienced by Magic Scene which was taken out. Catch The Culprit Raced wide throughout. Nunya Bizz Raced very wide throughout. Zooks When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, rider B Ward stated that whilst his mount was somewhat pressured by Zardabba in the middle stages, it was nevertheless under pressure rounding the home turn and weakened over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr T Robinson expressed disappointment in the performance and advised that gelding would now be spelled.
