HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGIS TENTH SEASON SUNY CORTLAND, 1977 CAREER RECORD: 237-71 FIVE-TIME MAAC COACH OF THE YEAR Brian Giorgis is in his 10th season as head coach of the Marist women s basketball team, and is the program s all-time leader in wins. His career record stands at 225-65 and his.776 winning percentage is sixth best among active Division I coaches. He stands behind all-time coaching greats such as Geno Auriemma (UConn), Pat Summitt (Tennessee) and Tara VanDerveer (Stanford). In his first nine seasons in Poughkeepsie, Giorgis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times - three times outright (2003-04, 2007-08, 2010-11), and a share of the award on two other occasions (2004-05, 2005-06). Giorgis, a 2010 inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, has led the program to national prominence in his first nine seasons. Last season, the Red Foxes reached their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament and their seventh in eight years. Marist achieved the highest national ranking in program history when they were ranked 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll on March 8. The team also won its eighth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title with a perfect 18-0 mark in the MAAC, and finished three games ahead of second-place Loyola. It was only the second time since the MAAC expanded to an 18-game schedule that a team has finished with a perfect conference record, with the other time being the 2007-08 Red Foxes. Marist entered the NCAA Tournament as 10th seed in the Philadelphia Regional and faced off against the seventh-seeded Iowa State Cyclones. The Red Foxes used a 25-4 run over a span of 6:51 in the first half to grow a lead as large as 20 points, 40-20 and held on for the upset 74-64. Marist went into their second round game against second-seeded Duke, boasting the nation s longest winning streak at 27 games. The Blue Devils had to come from behind, scoring 11 straight points with under five minutes left in the game to take the lead for good, ending Marist s season 71-66. The Red Foxes finished one win shy of tying the program record with 32 wins. Beyond his success on the floor, Giorgis has also led his program to participate in a number of initiatives within the basketball and local communities. Since taking over the program in 2002-03, the Red Foxes have helped to raise funds for a number of different causes. The team has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Kids Day Out, a one-day clinic sponsored by to benefit students with disabilities. Additionally, the Red Foxes have worked with the WBCA in its efforts to promote breast cancer awareness with an annual Pink Zone contest. The women s basketball program also works with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which attempts to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. The Red Foxes adopted Nina Triplo in April 2010. In 2009-10, Marist when 26-8, and won their seventh straight MAAC Regular Season Title with a 15-3 conference record. The Red Foxes defeated Fairfield 66-49 for their fifth consecutive MAAC Tournament Championship. Awarded the 12th seed in the Memphis Regional, Marist took on fifth-seeded Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes had their season cut short by the Hoyas however, 62-42. The Red Foxes went 29-4 in 2008-09 with a 16-2 mark in conference. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 that season as well, and was ranked for three weeks. For his efforts, Giorgis was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association. In 2007-08, the Red Foxes set a new program record with 32 wins. Marist posted an 18-0 record in the MAAC, the first team to do so since the conference expanded to 10 teams, and won its fifth consecutive regular season title. The Red Foxes also earned their first in-season ranking in 2007-08 when the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll ranked them 25th on Feb. 12. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the poll by the end of the regular season. A record 21-game winning streak propelled Marist to its fourth MAAC Tournament title and a seventh-seed in the New Orleans Region of the NCAA Tournament. Marist won its first round NCAA Tournament game for the second straight season, using a 39-7 run over the last 14:13 of the game to defeat 10th-seeded DePaul 76-57. The Red Foxes took a 22-game winning streak, the nation s longest at the time, into their second round game against LSU. While Marist did fall to the Tigers, the Red Foxes showed they can hang with the nation s elite teams for a second straight season. Giorgis earned two accolades for his work during the 2007-08 season. He was named MAAC Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time in six seasons that he earned at least a share of the award. The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association also honored Giorgis by naming him and C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers the Maggie Dixon Co-Coaches of the Year. Giorgis and the Red Foxes enjoyed an historic season and its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. He led the Red Foxes to their first ever win in the NCAA Tournament, a 67-63 upset of fourth-seeded Ohio State. Marist followed it up with a 73-59 win over Middle Tennessee State to advance to the Sweet 16. The win over MTSU marked the first time a MAAC program, men s or women s, reached the Sweet

16 in conference history. Marist s Cinderella run on the national stage came to a close when it met eventual national champion Tennessee in the Sweet 16. The Red Foxes won 29 games during the season, and embarked on winning streaks of seven and 13 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the fourth straight season. In 2005-06, Giorgis led Marist to a then program-best 23 triumphs and its second trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes embarked on winning streaks of seven and 12 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the third straight season. In 2004-05, Giorgis guided Marist to a 22-win season, which included a then program-record 16-game winning streak. After starting the MAAC season 0-3, the Red Foxes closed it with 15 consecutive triumphs to earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament for the first time. The 2003-04 season was historical, as it was the first time the Red Foxes earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in what became known as a season of firsts. Additionally, Marist earned its first share of a MAAC regular-season title and compiled its first winning record in 11 years. Giorgis first campaign laid the foundation for future success. Taking over a team in 2002-03 which had lost the fourth- and fifth-leading scorers in program history to graduation the prior year, Giorgis team improved its win total from 11 to 13. The Red Foxes also earned their first win in a MAAC Tournament game in school history with a first-round triumph over Loyola. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. In his final season there, the girls basketball team finished with a fourth-place national ranking in the USA Today poll and earned its fourth straight New York State Federation Championship. He earned WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, was runner-up for WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and was selected to coach at the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game. As the head girls basketball coach at Lourdes, Giorgis posted an astounding record of 451-44 in his 19 seasons, good for a winning percentage of.911. He won nine state championships with the Warriors. In his last two years, his teams posted a combined mark of 56-2 and earned the top ranking in the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Area Poll each year. Giorgis has earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors and two coach of the year awards from the New York State Coaches Association. He led Lourdes to the league title all 19 of his seasons there and won 15 Section I crowns, with the last 11 coming consecutively. Giorgis achievements at Lourdes were not limited to the basketball court. He is the only coach in state history to take teams in four different sports to the state Final Four, as he also guided the baseball, softball and volleyball teams there. His softball squad captured the state crown in 1990. Additionally, Giorgis coached golf and tennis at Lourdes and served as athletic director for 10 years. He served two stints as president of the Section One Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Giorgis earned a bachelor s degree in health education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1977, and earned a master s in health education from Virginia Tech University in 1982. GIORGIS BY THE NUMBERS 6 Giorgis ranks 6th among active Division I coaches in winning percentage with a mark of.776. 8 Marist has held the opposition under 60 points per game for each of the last eight seasons. The Red Foxes have also won eight consecutive MAAC Regular Season Titles. 17 The Red Foxes reached a ranking 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll last season. The ranking was the highest in program history. 49.7 Marist led the nation in scoring defense, holding opposing offenses to just 49.7 points per game. 167 Number of wins Marist has had under Giorgis where the opponent has been held to under 60 points. 136 Marist has won 136 MAAC contests since Giorgis took over the program in 2002-03. 141 Giorgis won his 141st career game at Marist on Nov. 21, 2008, making him the program s all-time leader in coaching wins.
